Cynthia Littleton in her "On the Air" blog on Variety reports on the status of the latest Jesse Stone movie. Tom Selleck, who plays Jesse Stone, is currently in Nova Scotia filming Innocents Lost, the seventh made-for-television movie based on the character created by Robert B. Parker. Selleck, who is a longtime devotee of Parker's work, has an active role in shaping the scripts and producing the films in the secluded environs of Halifax. And if Selleck had his way, he'd be making two Jesse Stone movies a year.
"We don't do cliffhangers. The movies stand on their own. But with regular viewing the audience gets the bonus of a continuing backstory," Selleck said in an interview just before he headed north earlier this month. "People want to know what's going to happen with this guy. He's basically a decent guy with a lot of flaws. He's his own worst enemy ... but he's a guy you want to root for."
Though ratings for the previous movies have been solid, CBS (the network on which they've originally aired) has a mixed record of scheduling them in a timely manner. The first film, Stone Cold, which was based on the 4th book in the series, aired in February 2005. Two more movies based on existing novels followed in 2006 and a fourth in 2007. But it was over a year from the time the fifth movie, Thin Ice, the first not based on a Parker book, finished production and its air date in March 2009. A sixth film, No Remorse, wrapped up production last November, but has yet to be scheduled by the network.
We're thrilled that CBS has enough confidence in the series to continue ordering more. But we agree with Selleck, who said, "There's a market for us. We're proving that the network TV audience does want to see movies -- they just want to see good movies." We just want to see them soon after they're completed, and more of them!
(MBN note: All five Jesse Stone movies that have been televised are available on DVD from Mysteries on TV: Jesse Stone.)
Return to Mystery Books News ...
when will the two new dvd's be available fot purchase? rose
ReplyDeleteNo Remorse....really REALLY good. I do not get
ReplyDeletewhy the CBS doesn't grab this movie series and
hang on for all its worth.
BEST TV Movie since the last one.
PLEASE...let Tom have his way, two movies a year would be fabulous! It would behoove CBS to give the fans what they want. We absolutely LOVE this intriguing character and this awesome story line. Tom Selleck is PERFECT...PLEASE keep 'em coming!!!
ReplyDeleteI am obsessed with these movies. Watching them is like reading a terrific book that you don't want to end. I wish they were aired more often. I NEVER purchase movies, but plan on ordering the entire set.
ReplyDeleteAll net works are screwy, often what they do do not make sense.
ReplyDeleteAxe men, ice road truckers on the history Channel, Casino Royal on the Si-Fi channel and so on.
I had given up on the airing of Jesse Stone no remorse and was quite bummed out. My wife and I are ecstatic that there is a 7th, but the when will be a stresser
We love this series and have rented them on Netfix... worth watching many times... wish it was a regular series... Tired of the stuff on the tube now...
ReplyDeleteWe were so sorry to hear about Robert B. Parker's death....We have loved Tom Selleck and the entire cast in the made for TV movie series. We hope they can continue the story line....Honestly, we would love to see a movie more often than just twice a year...maybe they can get some good writers to continue the story line...
ReplyDeleteBest tv movies ever..why not two a year at least
ReplyDeleteThese are one of the best series of movies we have had on TV for a long time, keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteWe do own all 5 of the movies and plan to get the last one when it comes out on DVD.
Best thing on TV can't wait for Innocents lost.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I both love the Jesse Stone series and have bought the first five and have reserved a copy of No Remorse which will be available around the end of July. You can go online to walmart and reserve and pay for it and have it shipped to your house as soon as it's available. We also would like to see CBS schedule at least two of these a year.
ReplyDeleteMy entire family loves the Jesse Stone series - can't get enough of it! We have seen each episode at least four times. Twice a year would be awesome! CBS needs to get on board with this project and realize that there is a huge audience of Jesse Stone fans alive, well and waiting for more!!
ReplyDeletebest thing on television! character development is why
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THESE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I both love the Jesse Stone movies. Love Tom Selleck as Jesse. Great dialog. So sorry to lose Robert B Parker.
ReplyDeleteCount me in...I'm addicted. I have the whole series and can't wait for the next movie to come out. I tell everyone how good they are...I'm hoping more people will get hooked and demand more episodes!
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I enjoy watching the series,(they are not very "bloody" like some other crime stories) and now we have the first five movies on dvd. I'll be buying NO REMORSE soon. Keep them coming, we'll be waiting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the previous remarks. I caught Stone Cold on UK TV the other day and was blown away.I have read all the Jesse Stone books and I though Tom Selleck captured the character absolutely perfectly to the extent that I couldn't think of him as Tom Selleck because he was Jesse Stone.
ReplyDeleteAmong the best series of movies I have ever seen!!! I wish CBS would air the 'Innocents Lost' one! The acting, story lines, and pace of all the released movies are fantastic...addictive!
ReplyDeleteThe reason they're so good and addictive is they actually make sense. They're down to earth and the plots are believable. Call me old fashion, but we need more movie scripts and actors like Tom Selleck, in the world. He has a John Wayne like presence about him. Selleck is an excellent actor! Let's hope they continue filming this series.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE the Jesse Stone movies; really can't get enough of them. I hate having to wait so long for each new one to air. I can't wait to see "Innocents Lost" if CBS ever gets around to airing it. I would love to see at least two a year.
ReplyDeleteI just came across something that says that the air date for "Innocents Lost" is May 9,2011.
ReplyDeleteBoth IMDB and Wikipedia are listing May 9th, 2011 as the air date, but we haven't had confirmation from CBS yet. May is typically month the movies have aired, so it sounds right.
ReplyDeleteActually, now that we look at a calendar, May 9th doesn't seem quite right. CBS has historically aired the movies on Sundays, and May 9th, 2011 is a Monday. The last film aired on May 9th, 2010, which was a Sunday, so maybe someone's confused.
ReplyDeleteInnocents Lost, the 7th film in the series, is scheduled to air May 22nd, 2011, on CBS. See our announcement here: http://www.omnimysterynews.com/2011/02/innocents-lost-7th-jesse-stone-film-to.html
ReplyDeleteI love Jesse Stone...I watch them over and over....please keep them coming...
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% I have bought all the DVD's so far, and love them. I wonder how many DVD players I will wear out before I get tired of watching these great movies
