The Killing Moon by Chuck Hogan

A Novel of Suspense

Publisher: Scribner

Price: $3.99 (as of 08/23/2016 at 8:00 PM ET).

The Killing Moon by Chuck Hogan, Amazon Kindle format

The crack of a handgun shatters the silence of a warm summer night … A notorious local felon and former child magician vanishes, seemingly without a trace … A corrupt police force applies a stranglehold to a failing town … An ailing old man hatches a last-ditch plan to save the police department he once headed, and the community he still loves … An outsider arrives, bearing a simple recipe for death that could destroy them all …

Buried deep in the rural backcountry of New England, the town of Black Falls isn't dying so much as quietly fading away.

No supermarket. No traffic lights. No ATM. No hope.

Donald Maddox, a man with no law enforcement background — indeed, no background at all — has returned to his hometown after fifteen years to find himself employed as an auxiliary patrolman on a local police force known to inspire more fear than trust in its citizenry.

When a brutal murder shatters the isolation of this forgotten place, triggering the arrival of state police homicide detectives and a town-wide manhunt, both the local cops and Maddox appear to have something to hide. As the tightly wound mystery that is Maddox's past begins to unravel, he becomes ensnared in a deadly conspiracy that ultimately threatens his life, as well as the lives of those nearest him.

Review: The Calamity Café by Gayle Leeson

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The Calamity Café by Gayle Leeson. An Amy Flowers, Down South Café Mystery.

Review summary: There are probably too many elements at play here for a first in series mystery. The author deserves considerable credit for juggling all the disparate plot points while still moving the story along at a good clip, but it's still somewhat messy along the way. A competent, if not especially strong, start to this series. (Click here for text of full review.)

Publisher synopsis: Aspiring chef and small-town Virginia native Amy Flowers is ready to open her own café offering old-fashioned Southern food. But her dream may go up in smoke when someone kills the competition …

Tired of waiting tables at Lou's Joint, Amy Flowers doesn't just quit — she offers to buy the place from her bully of a boss, so she can finally open the café of her dreams. Amy can't wait to serve the kind of Southern, down-home treats and dishes that her grandmother always loved to the kooky cast of regulars at the restaurant. She knows her comfort food will be the talk of the sweet, small town of Winter Garden, Virginia.

At first Lou Lou refuses to sell, but when she seems ready to make a deal, she tells Amy to come see her. Showing up at the eatery ready to negotiate, Amy is shocked to find her former employer murdered. As the prime suspect, Amy will have to clear her name by serving up the real killer — and with Lou Lou's stack of enemies, that's a tall order.

Tennyson has a reputation in Hollywood after solving the murder of rapper Afrodite, but politely turns Jackson down: His acting career is taking off with a new series, and he's trying to work out his personal life after a series of wrong turns.

But Tennyson's life is upturned when his seedy past catches up to him on the set of his TV series. Then T. D. Jackson is found dead in his home, the victim of an apparent suicide.

T.D.'s gorgeous cousin, Melanie, is sure the superstar was murdered, and Jackson's family offers Tennyson an irresistible fee to discover the truth. But prying into T. D. Jackson's death means answering the question that divided a nation and destroyed a film star and a football icon's life and career: Did T. D. Jackson kill his wife?

When the investigation takes an unexpected turn toward the governor's mansion and a long-forgotten football game in the segregated South of the 1960s, Tennyson uncovers secrets tearing at the heart of two dynasties and must rely on all of his assets — his actor's heart, deadly hands, profiler's mind, and every other part of his body — to keep from dying next.

The Double-Jack Murders by Patrick F. McManus, Amazon Kindle format

Sheriff Bo Tully with his hands full of elusive killers, eccentric backwoods characters, and irresistible women in this latest romp through the wilds of Blight County, Idaho …

Sheriff Bo Tully is the kind of western lawman who's as good with the ladies as he is with his guns, and he never lets a death threat get in the way of a good barbecue. He's a man with a sense of humor, which comes in handy when trying to establish order in Blight County.

Here, Tully pursues a seventy-five-year-old missing persons case in which a pair of gold miners (a two-man drilling team known as a double-jack) mysteriously disappeared just as they hit the mother lode in a remote part of Blight County. Meanwhile, a second, more threatening case looms large. After serving only two months of a life sentence, a mentally unstable murderer named Kincaid — a nasty piece of work if there ever was one — manages to escape prison, setting his sights on killing the man who put him behind bars: one Sheriff Bo Tully. In an effort to lead his would-be killer into the open, and also to do a little gold prospecting and fishing while he's at it, Tully heads north with his ex-sheriff father, Pap, and his friend and expert tracker, Dave.

As the two cases play themselves out, Sheriff Tully finds himself hunting down one murderer who's probably long dead, and being hunted by another who's very much alive.

Now, after months of careful planning, two undercover agents have infiltrated Gadjoyan's inner circle. Soon, they will have sufficient evidence to seize the arms dealer and remove a clear and present danger to the United States.

On the small Japanese island of Okinawa, Gadjoyan's representatives are concluding a deal with Miroji Jimura. Jimura's hatred of Americans is absolute, and he's only too happy to profit from sales of their own weapons to be used against them.

When a rival of Jimura's sabotages the arms deal, one of the CIA's undercover assets is killed, threatening the case against Gadjoyan and revealing a far greater menace to American security. The only thing standing against this new, immediate danger is a single, junior CIA agent named Jack Bauer.
