Koreans look for any opportunity to hate the soldiers who drink at their bars and carouse with their women. When Pak Ok-Suk, a young Korean woman, is found brutally murdered in a torched apartment in the Itaewon red-light district of Seoul, it looks like it might be the work of her American soldier boyfriend.

Sergeants George SueƱo and Ernie Bascom, Military Police for the U.S. 8th Army, are assigned to the case, but they have nothing to go on other than a tenuous connection to an infamous prostitute. As repressed resentments erupt around them, the pair sets out on an increasingly dangerous quest to find evidence that will absolve their countryman.

Maine newspaper reporter Joe Gale is at his best when covering the crime beat for the Portland Daily Chronicle. In the dead of winter he heads Downeast to cover the murder trial of fisherman Danny Boothby, charged with burying a filleting knife in the chest of politically well-connected social worker Frank O'Rourke.

O'Rourke held a thankless job in a hard place. Many locals found him arrogant, but say he didn't deserve to die. Others whisper that O'Rourke got himself killed through his own rogue behavior.

After Joe's hard-nosed reporting provokes someone to run him off an isolated road, he realizes his life depends on figuring out not only who committed the murder, but who's stalking him — O'Rourke's prominent brother, friends or enemies of the dead social worker or members of Boothby's family. As he digs deeper, Joe uncovers enough secrets and lies to fill a cemetery. He'll have to solve this one fast … or his next headline may be his own obituary.

As the 1960s draw to a close and a new era beckons, he feels more and more estranged and ill-equipped to cope. But for Gently and his fellow officers, one thing remains constant in their northeast England beat: violent crime.

In four all-new, feature-length episodes, Gently is again assisted in his crime-fighting duties by Detective Sergeant John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby), who is up for promotion to inspector, and Constable Rachel Coles (Lisa McGrillis), who is preparing to take her sergeants exam. While Gently and Bacchus collaborate as usual in their investigations, both are harboring secrets from each other that threaten to bring their professional careers to an end.

Brenda Blethyn stars as the maverick but brilliant Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in this mystery series based on Ann Cleeves's bestselling crime fiction. From the streets of Newcastle to remote rural Northumberland, Stanhope tackles cases as diverse and wild as their settings: a deadly blaze at a vacation park on the windswept North Sea coast, the 30-year-old disappearance of a schoolgirl from a mining town, a corpse decomposing in a farm's slurry tank, and the suspicious death of a family man in a multistory parking lot.

As rumpled and caustic as ever, DCI Stanhope contends with a new assistant this season. Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty) is still recovering from an on-the-job trauma, but Vera shows little patience for his psychological scars. If their partnership is to work, Healy will quickly have to get accustomed to the sometimes unconventional methods his boss employs — to unearth the truth, crack a case, and catch a killer.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Ann Summerville

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Ann Summerville

We are delighted to welcome author Ann Summerville to Omnimystery News today, courtesy of Great Escapes Book Tours, which is coordinating her current book tour. We encourage you to visit all of the participating host sites; you can find her schedule here.

Ann's third Pecan Valley mystery is Night and Day (May 2015 trade paperback and ebook formats) and we had the opportunity to spend some time with her talking about series.

Omnimystery News: Into which mystery genre would you place this series?

Ann Summerville
Photo provided courtesy of
Ann Summerville

Ann Summerville: When I first started writing, I wasn't choosing a particular genre, but as I got more into the story and read it to my critique group, one of the members suggested it was a cozy mystery. I hadn't heard the term so looked it up. I realized she was right, my novel was heading in the direction of a cozy mystery and I made sure that it adhered to the rules of that genre: Takes place in a small area (usually village), amateur sleuth, no graphic violence, profanity or explicit sex.

OMN: How much of your own personal or professional experience have you included in your books

AS: Although there aren't any specific events or people I know in Night and Day, I do use quirks or dialogue that I observe. One of the characters, Bea, has a collection of clothing and ornaments with bees on them which her friend Marge feels she should collect because of her name. I have unwittingly started a collection of hedgehogs. My friend bought me one for my birthday, then another for Christmas, now I get them periodically because she insists I collect them!

OMN: Tell us a little more about your writing process.

AS: I keep a list of character descriptions, likes and dislikes etc. As most of my novels are part of a series it helps when I write the next book. Mysteries usually follow a specific formula which I use as an outline, but I start off by writing a few chapters before I analyze where the story is going. Often I find as the story develops the killer might turn out to be as much of a surprise to me as it is to the reader and the mystery goes in a different direction than first planned.

OMN: How do you go about reseaching the plot elements of your stories?

AS: I've always been fascinated with The Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas and although closed now, you can still walk around the grounds and imagine what a magnificent place it had been in the Roaring Twenties. I wondered what they might uncover during excavation if the hotel was ever re-opened. After researching the history on the Internet, I consulted with our local medical examiner regarding procedures when finding a skeleton and how they would use DNA to confirm if someone was a relative. At our monthly Crimesolvers meeting (part of Sisters in Crime) a forensic anthropologist was a guest speaker and also explained how finding skeletal remains would be handled by local authorities in the area. Some of the facts were changed to fit the story in The Berton Hotel mystery.

OMN: How did you come up with the setting of Pecan Valley?

AS: It's much easier to write about a place that I already have pictured in my mind.

Pecan Valley, the setting for Night and Day, is a fictional place based on Weatherford, Texas. I came up with the name Pecan Valley because of the historically old Pecan tree that is admired there. I try to keep most descriptions close to landmarks and architecture in Weatherford, but Bea's gatehouse and Grandiflower House doesn't exist.

Review: The White Ghost by James R. Benn

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The White Ghost by James R. Benn. A Billy Boyle, World War II Mystery.

Review summary: This is a strongly conceived, brilliantly executed murder mystery, interweaving (as in past entries in this series) real-life historical figures into a fictional storyline. The time and place are particularly well drawn here. This is one of the best series mysteries currently being written, and each new book is better than the last. (Click here for text of full review.)

Soho Crime (September 2015)

Publisher synopsis: 1943: In the midst of the brutal, hard-fought Solomon Islands campaign between the Allies and the Japanese forces, Lieutenant Billy Boyle receives an odd assignment: he's sent by the powerful Kennedy family to investigate a murder in which PT skipper (and future president) Jack Kennedy has been implicated. The victim is a native coastwatcher, an allied intelligence operative, whom Kennedy discovered on the island of Tulagi with his head bashed in. That's Kennedy's story, anyhow.

Kennedy was recovering in the Navy hospital on the island after the sinking of his PT-109 motor torpedo boat. The military hasn't decided yet whether to make him a hero for surviving the attack, or have him court-martialed for losing the boat, and the last thing the Kennedy clan wants is a murder charge hanging over his head. Billy knows firsthand that he shouldn't trust Jack: the man is a charmer, a womanizer, and, when it suits his needs, a liar. But would he kill someone in cold blood? And if so, why? The first murder is followed by two more, and to find the killer, Billy must sort through a tangled, shifting web of motives and identities, even as combat rages all around him.
