It's the trial of the century in a 1940's North Carolina town. Murder and vigilante justice. War hero and law student Wes Ross has to save his uncle — but hide the truth.

Taught to shoot in the rough logging camps of the North Carolina swamps, Wes Ross remembers his lessons well. Dodging hostile gunfire with dozens of other young Marines, he storms a remote Pacific island as one of Carlson's Raiders in the first commando-style attack of World War Ii. He blasts several Japanese snipers from their palm-tree hideouts with buckshot before an enemy bullet sends him home.

The Carolina homefront includes a new girlfriend and a new occupation, learning to be a rural lawyer in his uncle's law office, including courtroom intrigue and what goes on behind the scenes. Wes, like his uncles, is a good man, the kind who takes up for the poor and downtrodden, looking out for those who are easy prey for bullies.

Frog Cutshaw is the storekeeper in the Caney Fork backwoods, a swaggering ex-moonshiner who is deadly with his ever-present .45 auto pistol. Frog's daylight rape of a married woman and the brutal killing of her husband bring on Bible Belt vigilante justice, an eye for an eye, a life for a life.

Being a 16-year-old safecracker and active-duty daughter of international spies has its moments, good and bad. Pros: Seeing the world one crime-solving adventure at a time. Having parents with super cool jobs. Cons: Never staying in one place long enough to have friends or a boyfriend. But for Maggie Silver, the biggest perk of all has been avoiding high school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations.

Then Maggie and her parents are sent to New York for her first solo assignment, and all of that changes. She'll need to attend a private school, avoid the temptation to hack the school's security system, and befriend one aggravatingly cute Jesse Oliver to gain the essential information she needs to crack the case … all while trying not to blow her cover.

In 1950s Iowa, a murder-suicide forces a lawyer to put aside his rock-and-roll grief …

Sam McCain loves Buddy Holly because he's the only rock-and-roll star who still seems like a dweeb, and Sam knows how that feels. With the unrequited love of his life at his side, Sam drives more than three hours through the snow to watch his idol play the Surf Ballroom. That night, Buddy Holly dies in the most famous plane crash in music history, but Sam has no time to grieve. Because there are too many lawyers in this small town, Sam makes a living as a PI, doing odd jobs for an eccentric judge — whose nephew, it seems, has a problem only a detective could solve. His trophy wife has been murdered, and as soon as Sam arrives, the nephew kills himself, too.

The police see this as a clear-cut murder-suicide, but Sam wants to know more, diving into a mystery that will get dangerous faster than you can say "bye-bye, Miss American Pie."

Ben Kendall was a troubled man. Coming back from Vietnam with PTSD and scars that no one else could see, he hid away from the world, filling his house with an ever-increasing amount of stuff, until finally, the piles collapsed and he was found dead, crushed beneath his own belongings. But what at first glance looks to be a tragic accidental death of a hoarder, may be something much more — and much deadlier. Ben's cousin, medical examiner Beverly Hillstrom, unsettled by the circumstances of his death, alerts Joe Gunther and his Vermont Bureau of Investigation team.

Ben, it seems, brought back something else from Vietnam than personal demons — he also brought back combat photos and negatives that someone else wants desperately to keep from the public eye. When Beverly's daughter Rachel made her cousin Ben — and his photos — the subject of her college art project, some of those photos appeared on the walls of a local art gallery. This in turn resulted in the appearance of a two man hit squad, searching for some other missing negatives. With Joe Gunther and his squad trailing behind the grisly research results of the hit team, and the deadly killers closing in on Rachel, Gunther has little time to find and protect Rachel before she ends up in the same grisly state as her cousin before her.

Christy Petrino hadn't planned on a vacation on Ocracoke Island, but when she learns her fiancé and boss, suave Michael DePalma, is a "made man" and the Philadelphia law firm where she works is a front for the mob, she breaks her engagement and quits her job. But no one walks away from the DePalma family business so easily … only if she delivers a locked briefcase to a motel on Ocracoke Island will she — and her mother and sisters — be free.

But after clandestinely making her drop-off late at night, Christy suspects she is being followed on the moonlit beach — and unwittingly runs into a new kind of terror. Now a witness at the center of a homicide investigation, Christy learns the police are hunting a serial killer they refer to as the "Beachcomber" because beautiful young women — women who in fact resemble her — have disappeared recently while vacationing at nearby beach communities. Christy doesn't know whom to fear more — a serial killer who believes she might be able to identify him, or the DePalma family, whose tentacles she can't seem to escape.

Only when she's with Luke Rand, her big surfer-dude next-door neighbor, does she feel safe. But with Luke's asking so many questions about her ex-fiancé and his showing up almost too conveniently whenever danger strikes, she can't help but wonder if his interest in her is due to more than sexual attraction. Can she trust this handsome stranger to help her survive a hot and deadly summer?

Please Welcome Novelist Steve P. Vincent

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Steve P. Vincent
with Steve P. Vincent

We are delighted to welcome novelist Steve P. Vincent to Omnimystery News.

Steve introduces journalist Jack Emery in the political thriller The Foundation (Momentum; September 2014 ebook formats) and in his guest post for us today, he relates a conversation he had with the character. To set the stage, Steve, while he may be fairly tough on Jack, maintains that he's fair and it's all for a greater purpose. Jack, on the other hand, thinks Steve is a jerk, and he has the scars and mental trauma to prove it.

Steve P. Vincent: Hi Jack, nice to speak with you. It's been a while. How's it going?

Steve P. Vincent

Jack Emery: You're lucky I'm here at all.

SPV: Now that's a bit ha —

JE: I just read the book.

SPV: Oh. About that …

JE: I can't believe the hell you put me through in 273 pages! I mean, the drafts were bad enough, Steve, but when you team up with a commercial publisher? Brutal.

SPV: Point taken. But the end justifies the means, right?

JE: Would nuking Yankee Stadium be justified to make sure my team wasn't beaten by them? Of course not! Did you really need to make things quite so drastic?

SPV: It is a thriller …

JE: *glare*

SPV: Okay, we started off badly. Tell the readers a bit about yourself.

JE: *Sigh* Fine. I'm a journalist with a habit of getting into messes I should walk away from. I won a Pulitzer a few years back for my coverage of the war in Afghanistan. I like a drink.

SPV: You're also resilient.

JE: Hey, screw you buddy. You're just lucky you don't need to test your immunity to being blown up, tortured, shot at and stalked as often as I do.

SPV: Well, I find hitting Ctrl-A then delete to be a pretty effective tool for dealing with that. It's nice being the lord of your own domain. You should try it.

JE: I write real stories for a living. Not the popcorn fiction you pump out. I try to change the world for the better. You try to blow it up.

SPV: I always fix it in the end. Mostly. Besides, there was a lot that didn't make the final book.

JE: I shudder at the thought.

SPV: Let's take it down a level. We've heard a bit about your career, tell us about your home life.

JE: Complicated. In fact, what you put me through in those twenty-five chapters is nothing compared to my personal life lately. Some of that is in the book though, of course.

SPV: *laughs* I like you Jack. I hope I never have to kill you off to rekindle interest in my series.

JE: Me too, I me — Wait a minute. You said series. You mean there's more?

SPV: Sure! Dude has to eat. The second book is in the works at the moment.

JE: And I'm in it?

SPV: A starring role!

JE: Let me buy you a beer.
