Review: Herbie's Game by Timothy Hallinan

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Herbie's Game by Timothy Hallinan. A Junior Bender Mystery.

Review summary: The fourth entry in this series is sadly missing a clever crime caper to show off the skills of its master burglar, and is, for the most part, a sequence of rather doleful conversations that lead to an introspective revelation. Not the best way to enjoy the talents of this most original character. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Junior Bender Mystery
Soho Crime (July 2014)

Publisher synopsis: It's everyday business when Wattles, the San Fernando Valley's top "executive crook," sets up a hit. He establishes a chain of criminals to pass along the instructions and the money, thereby ensuring that the hitter doesn't know who hired him. Then one day Wattles finds his office safe open and a single item missing: the piece of paper on which he has written the names of the crooks in the chain. When people associated with the chain begin to pop up dead, the only person Wattles can turn to to solve his problem is Junior Bender, professional burglar and begrudging private eye for crooks.

But Junior already knows exactly who took Wattles's list: the signature is too obvious. It was Herbie Mott, Junior's burglar mentor and second father — and when Junior seeks him out to discuss the missing list, he finds Herbie very unpleasantly murdered. Junior follows the links in the chain back toward the killer, and as he does, he learns disturbing things about Herbie's hidden past. He has to ask himself how much of the life he's lived for the past twenty years has been of his own making, and how much of it was actually Herbie's game.

Dinner theater can be a death sentence …

Actress Isobel Spice and her best friend Delphi Kramer are thrilled to finally have an opportunity to perform together, even if it's just a cheesy interactive murder mystery at a judge's lifetime achievement dinner. But when Isobel's dramatic death scene is upstaged by a real murder and Delphi is left holding the still-smoking gun, Isobel drops the role of victim and assumes the role of detective.

With the help of her precocious brother Percival and her reluctant temp agent James Cooke, Isobel peels back layers of deception to reveal a shocking abuse of power — and no shortage of suspects eager to deliver justice to a man who denied it to so many.

The theft of the fabulous Faberge golden egg from a Russian country estate goes far beyond the bounds of mere robbery, Blackstone is warned in London. The victim is the Prince of Wales, the egg itself a gift from the Russian Tsar — and if the Tsar takes offence at the Prince's carelessness in losing it, the delicate balance of power in Europe could be destroyed for ever.

Yet if Blackstone is investigating a simple robbery, why is there an attempt on his life the moment he sets foot in Russia — an attempt which would have succeeded but for the intervention of mysterious masked figures? Why will no one talk about the closed coach which fled the scene after the theft? And what is the motive behind the murder of a young British officer staying at the house? The more Blackstone learns, the less he knows …

Who can he really trust? And is this priceless Golden Egg masking a deeper, darker secret?

Meet Centurion Gaius Hesperian; a reflective and compassionate member of Emperor Nero's palace guard with a knack for detective work. (He's considered rather odd by his fellow officers because he doesn't torture witnesses.)

When Odysseus Memnon, a Greek-Egyptian shipping magnate, is found murdered in his Alexandrian mansion after annoucing his conversion to an evangelistic cult to which he plans to donate all of his worldly goods, it's up to Gaius Hesperian to solve the crime.
