OSI special agent Maxine Decker is called upon to locate and recover a mysterious artifact stolen from a blacker-than-black government facility. The missing item is a fragment that was found at the crash site of the Roswell UFO incident in 1947. Following the trail, Maxine discovers a sinister plot to use the technological data stored in the artifact to build a device called the Shield. The result will bring the United States and its allies to their knees without ever firing a shot.

Terrence Bailey awakes one night to find his mother-in-law standing in a corner of his bedroom. The only problem is that his mother-in-law has been dead for seven years. Several weeks later Terrence dies of a heart attack … or does he?

Josiah's nose starts twitching in a bad way when Terrence goes to the "Great Beyond" and she thinks his death has something to do with Jean Louis, an internationally-known portrait artist who has come to the Bluegrass to paint Lady Elsmere's portrait.

She just doesn't like Jean Louis and does some digging on him. What she finds will involve Detective Goetz and almost get her daughter, Asa, shot.

Again, Josiah blames the black earth of Kentucky for spitting back secrets that should have remained buried in the dark and bloody ground.

As he steps from a taxi, prominent Chicago architect Wilson Willetts is murdered by an inept assassin who thereupon gets himself nabbed with indecent haste. Apart from Willetts's friends and relatives, just about everyone is happy that such a high-profile case has been cleared with such admirable efficiency. Preparing for trial, State's Attorney Sy Vytautis is happy because visions of sugary headlines dance in his ambitious head. The arresting officers, sexy Mark Bergman and grizzled John Dunegan, his mentor/trainer/partner, are happy because the brass in blue are happy.

But happiest of all are professional killer Arthur Reid and his alluring, adoring apprentice Dina Velaros. Now that they've dispatched Willetts and framed feckless Emilio Jesus Garcia, they plan a sybaritic retirement in winemaking country, far from their pursuers.

Bergman and Dunegan are excellent cops, however, and something about a case so impeccably neat and complete begins to rankle. Sensibilities alerted, they take a fresh look, and soon enough find themselves in an alternative investigation, awash in an archipelago of hidden, homicidal agendas.

Some things are worse than death …

Private detective John Arsenal can't tell you what terrible crime he committed to wind up in a sweltering urban hellscape, surrounded by thieves, drug addicts and murderers — only that it was very bad, and now he's being punished. That's because in Hell — or Brimstone, as the damned prefer to call it — your identity, your memories, even your name, are stripped away from you.

John is relatively comfortable in his damnation, working easy cases and making himself at home in the grimy squalor of the afterlife. That is, until a mysterious woman appears in his office, begging him to find her missing sister, and promising him the impossible in return — a glimpse of his old life, before Brimstone.

To track down the enigmatic Sophie, John must delve into Brimstone's darkest recesses, where murderous children run wild in packs, and a strange and terrifying new drug promises to deliver the user to the heights of ecstasy, but at the risk of being snuffed out of existence altogether. All the while, John must grapple with the vivid nightmares that have haunted him since his arrival in Brimstone, and confront the thing he desires and dreads the most — the truth of what he did to deserve damnation.
