Price: $2.99 (as of 11/27/13 04:30 PM ET)

Barry Soldat just wants to make it from Tuesday to Wednesday without getting into trouble. But trouble is everywhere. He gets fired. His girl friend dumps him. Three punks try to beat him up.

Meanwhile, five people have been killed with the same gun — a homeless man, three women, and a priest. The priest was his ex-wife's nephew, and she asks Barry to gather her nephew's personal effects. A small favor, she calls it, but somehow it looks like trouble.

Barry's not a hero. He's a decent guy trying to help, but no one wants to cooperate. Monsignor Murray won't tell him the whole story. Lieutenant Reille challenges him. A shadowy businessman tells him to leave town.

He needs a break. Saturday night, trying to relax at Maxi's Bar, Barry suddenly realizes who the killer is.

And that's when his troubles really begin.

A Crime Thriller

Glasgow is being terrorised by a serial killer the media have nicknamed The Cutter. The murders have left the police baffled. There seems to be neither rhyme nor reason behind the killings; no kind of pattern or motive; an entirely different method of murder each time, and nothing that connects the victims except for the fact that the little fingers of their right hands have been severed.

If DS Rachel Narey could only work out the key to the seemingly random murders, how and why the killer selects his victims, she would be well on her way to catching him. But as the police, the press and a threatening figure from Glasgow's underworld begin to close in on The Cutter, his carefully-laid plans threaten to unravel — with horrifying consequences.

Nick Perrone is a successful executive whose wife is seven months pregnant with a child he never wanted. Wyatt Orr is a struggling Homicide Detective who joined the force after failing to save his father from an armed burglar.

A camping trip seems like the perfect opportunity for these estranged friends to reconnect — and what better place than Zion? But after a heated argument, Wyatt backs out, leaving Nick to go alone.

Now Nick is missing and the authorities suspect he staged his own disappearance.

But Wyatt doesn't believe it, and finds himself en route to Utah fighting old and new demons. When he discovers Nick has been kidnapped, the pieces of an incomprehensible puzzle of human depravity and corporate greed begin falling into place. With every twist raising the stakes, it becomes a furious race against the clock. Heart of the Assassin by Robert Ferrigno
The Assassin Trilogy (3rd in series)
Publisher: Scribner

The year is 2045 and a warrior battles to save America from an Islamic mastermind …

Time is running out for the Islamic Republic and the Bible Belt, the two warring nations that arose when the former United States split apart after an economic collapse left tens of millions unemployed and desperate for leadership. Weakened by their endless conflict, both countries are now threatened by the expansionist dreams of the Aztlán Empire (formerly known as Mexico) to the south, which has steadily encroached deep into the regions once called California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Riven by intellectual and social decay, both the Islamic Republic and the Belt are at the brink of collapse.

The only solution is to reunite the countries and regain America's former power and global standing. And there's only one man who can do it: Rakkim Epps, genetically enhanced shadow warrior and hero of the two previous books in Robert Ferrigno's astonishing Assassin Trilogy.

Time is also running out for Epps's archenemy, the Old One, the sly, immensely rich Muslim fanatic who seeks to create one world under his domination. Now more than one hundred and fifty years old, he is dying and unhappily knows it. His solution is to reunite the Islamic Republic and the Bible Belt his way, and his plan involves his voluptuous but deadly daughter, Baby, and none other than Rakkim himself. The Old One is aided by his sadistic, carbon-skinned enforcer, Gravenholtz, whom Rakkim failed to kill in an earlier encounter and who now wishes to kill Rakkim and those he loves.

Meanwhile, there is a rumor of a discovery of a sacred relic in the contaminated ruins of Washington, D.C., a radiation zone peopled by diseased zombies and daring treasure hunters. It is into this deadly wasteland that Rakkim must secretly travel and retrieve the icon if he is to defeat Gravenholtz, Baby, and the Old One, and have even a chance to unite the two halves of America.

The Missing Dough
Chris Cavender
Series: Eleanor Swift, Pizza Lovers (6th)

The only thing Eleanor Swift loves more then A Slice of Delight — her Timber Ridge, North Carolina pizzeria — is her sister Maddy. So when Maddy's cheating ex-husband Grant shows up with some pie-in-the-sky idea to win Maddy back, Eleanor is happy to see her sister swiftly show him the door. But they both know Grant isn't done yet.

Especially when he picks a fight with Maddy's fiancée Bob in front of the whole town at the annual Founder's Day Festival. Naturally, when Grant is later found stabbed in the heart with a barbeque skewer, Bob is featured on the police chief's menu as Suspect #1. And when it turns out that Maddy stands to gain a different kind of dough — and lots of it — from Grant exiting this world, she and Eleanor know it's up to them to cook up an investigation to find the real killer.

Was it that female singer at the festival who wanted a word with the recently deceased? Or maybe Grant's haughty sister, who's colder then a day-old pizza? Or Grant's "business partner", who seemingly had the opportunity, means, and motive to mortally skewer Maddy's ex-husband? Only one thing is for sure: Eleanor and Maddy need to turn up the heat and deliver this killer … or their next scrumptious pizza may be their last!

Dead I Well May Be by Adrian McKinty
A Michael Forsythe Thriller (1st in series)
Publisher: Scribner

"I didn't want to go to America, I didn't want to work for Darkey White. I had my reasons. But I went."

So admits Michael Forsythe, an illegal immigrant escaping the Troubles in Belfast.

But young Michael is strong and fearless and clever — just the fellow to be tapped by Darkey, a crime boss, to join a gang of Irish thugs struggling against the rising Dominican powers in Harlem and the Bronx. The time is pre-Giuliani New York, when crack rules the city, squatters live furtively in ruined buildings, and hundreds are murdered each month. Michael and his lads tumble through the streets, shaking down victims, drinking hard, and fighting for turf, block by bloody block.

Dodgy and observant, not to mention handy with a pistol, Michael is soon anointed by Darkey as his rising star. Meanwhile Michael has very inadvisably seduced Darkey's girl, Bridget — saucy, fickle, and irresistible. Michael worries that he's being followed, that his affair with Bridget will be revealed. He's right to be anxious; when Darkey discovers the affair, he plans a very hard fall for young Michael, a gambit devilish in its guile, murderous in its intent.

But Darkey fails to account for Michael's toughness and ingenuity or the possibility that he might wreak terrible vengeance upon those who would betray him.

For a rare book, a desperate buyer turns to violence …

Six days a week, Joel Beer hunts for books in Denver. If he were the only scout in town, he might be able to make a living, but there are close to a dozen full-timers now — including his archrival, Popeye Lamonica — and Joel is having trouble paying his rent.

Facing eviction, Joel and his partner — a slow-witted vagrant named Lacy — go on the hunt. They are about to give up when they find an estate sale offering a $0.50 copy of Walter Behr’s Something for Nothing that is worth $500. But Popeye sees it, too. To make this treasure his, Joel will do whatever it takes — even if it means sacrificing his career.

Telemystery: CBS Developing Doc Ford, based on a Randy Wayne White Series Character

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

CBS is developing a crime drama based on Randy Wayne White's series character Marion "Doc" Ford.

Titled Doc Ford, Chris Gerolmo is writing the script that is centered on the ex-NSA agent, who now lives on the gulf coast of Florida working as a marine biologist.

White's long-running series began in 1990 with the publication of Sanibel Flats. The most recent book, Night Moves, the 20th in the series, was published earlier this year. With lots of fine material to work from, and the right casting, this could be a stellar drama for CBS.

Winner of the 2012 Philip K. Dick Award

Samuil Petrovitch is a survivor. He survived the nuclear fallout in St. Petersburg and hid in the London Metrozone — the last city in England. He's lived this long because he's a man of rules and logic. For example, getting involved = a bad idea.

But when he stumbles into a kidnapping in progress, he acts without even thinking. Before he can stop himself, he's saved the daughter of the most dangerous man in London. And clearly saving the girl = getting involved.

Now, the equation of Petrovitch's life is looking increasingly complex. Russian mobsters + Yakuza + something called the New Machine Jihad = one dead Petrovitch.

But Petrovitch has a plan — he always has a plan — he's just not sure it's a good one.
