William Morrow

The victim, Rebecca Meredith, was a talented but difficult woman with many admirers — and just as many enemies. An Olympic contender on the verge of a controversial comeback, she was also a high-ranking detective with the Met — a fact that raises a host of political and ethical issues in an already sensitive case.

To further complicate the situation, a separate investigation, led by Detective Inspector Gemma James, Kincaid's wife, soon reveals a disturbing — and possibly related — series of crimes, widening the field of suspects. But when someone tries to kill the search-and-rescue team member who found Rebecca's body, the case becomes even more complex and dangerous, involving powerful interests with tentacles that reach deep into the heart of the Met itself.

Surrounded by enemies with friendly faces, pressured to find answers quickly while protecting the Yard at all costs, his career and reputation on the line, Kincaid must race to catch the killer before more innocent lives are lost — including his own.

Fresh out of prison, Dortmunder plans a heist that could mean war.

John Dortmunder leaves jail with ten dollars, a train ticket, and nothing to make money on but his good name. Thankfully, his reputation goes far. No one plans a caper better than Dortmunder. His friend Kelp picks him up in a stolen Cadillac and drives him away from Sing-Sing, telling a story of a $500,000 emerald that they just have to steal. Dortmunder doesn't hesitate to agree.

The emerald is the crown jewel of a former British colony, lately granted independence and split into two nations: one for the Talabwo people, one for the Akinzi. The Akinzi have the stone, the Talabwo want it back, and their UN representative offers a fine payday to the men who can get it. It's not a simple heist, but after a few years in stir, Dortmunder could use the challenge.

Telemystery: Declan Hill's The Fix to be Adapted as Crime Drama

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Ineffable Pictures plans to adapt Declan Hill's bestselling non-fiction book The Fix into a crime drama for television. (More details about the book, below.)

"Everyone knows that soccer is far and away the world's most popular sport. However, it wasn't until I read Declan's book that I realized that the criminal aspect surrounding it might be even bigger," said Ineffable Pictures CEO Raphael Kryszek. "This will undoubtedly set the framework for a captivating piece of television."

The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime by Declan Hill

The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime
Declan Hill

Author Declan Hill comes face-to-face with the multi-billion dollar illegal Asian gambling industry. Over four years, he interviewed more than two hundred people, including professional gamblers, Mafia hitmen, undercover cops, top-level international soccer players, referees, and officials. He met men who claim they have bribed their way into fixing the results of some of the biggest matches in the sport. Initially very sceptical, Hill travelled across four continents to corroborate their stories. He found soccer leagues where mobsters have fixed more than eighty per cent of the games. But most chilling, he met and then was adopted by a small group of match-fixers.

In The Fix, Hill explains the structure and mechanics of illegal gambling syndicates, what soccer players and referees do (or not do) to affect the outcome of their games, why relatively rich and high-status athletes would fix games, how and why club officials would bribe the opposition and how they get referees "on their side". Perhaps most shocking is Hill's discovery that gambling fixers have successfully infiltrated the game, all the way to the top international matches.

The book, however, is not just about match fixing in soccer, the world's most popular sport. Throughout the text, Hill uses examples from other sports — tennis, hockey, even rowing — to show that the credibility of professional sport now lies on a fragile foundation, and it provides enough hints to suspect that all sports above amateur level should look nervously over their shoulder.

ITV's Miniseries Unforgiven to be Adapted for Film

Mystery, Suspense and Thriller Film News

Christopher McQuarrie will write and direct a film adaptation of the 2009 ITV1 miniseries Unforgiven. This is, according to Deadline, McQuarrie's second time around with the project; in 2010 he was attached to write the script but left to direct Jack Reacher, the screenplay of which he also adapted from Lee Child's novel.

Unforgiven tells the story of Ruth Slater, who has spent the past 15 years imprisoned for the murder of two policemen, and now faces the daunting prospect of rebuilding her life after being irresistibly drawn to the place that haunts her, Upper Hanging Stones Farm. In spite of trying to focus on the future and her new boyfriend Brad, Ruth is unable to forget her past and the sister, Katie, who she was forced to leave behind. Outraged to hear that the woman who killed their father has been released, Kieran and Steve Whelan are eager to seek revenge. Believing that life should mean life, the two brothers decide to take the law into their own hands. But just how far are they capable of going? Can they really do to her what she did to their father? As the details about Ruth's past become known, maintaining a job, friendship and a relationship become increasingly arduous. Ruth soon realizes that the ramifications of her release spread further than she could have imagined, with far reaching implications for everyone involved.

Unforgiven was honored as Best Drama Series by the Royal Television Society in 2009.

with Sam Berretti

We are delighted to welcome novelist Sam Berretti to Omnimystery News today.

Sam's debut mystery, the first in a series, is Double Mayhem (CreateSpace, November 2012 trade paperback and ebook formats).

We asked Sam to tell us about his approach to writing mysteries, "Mysterious Beginnings" as it were …

Sam Berretti

There is a magic that occurs when we read and whole new worlds are created and revealed. When the story happens to be a mystery or thriller, there are the added dimensions of a puzzle, the unexpected and conflict. Since Edgar Allen Poe published The Murders in the Rue Morgue in 1841 for the masses the public has been chasing bad guys through untold billions of ink smudged pages and pixilated screens. Growing up with Superman, The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie, it's no surprise that when I turned to writing I naturally leaned toward stories with elements of suspense and danger. I am also an artist and I vaguely remember creating my first "masterpiece" with a cover showing a man with a cape riding a horse. That was done on construction paper with crayons. My elementary grade teacher was gushing. So I've been struggling with this impulse to create fiction for a long time. Somewhere along the way, life got in the way. Now that I'm back to it I feel relieved, like rediscovering a familiar path through the woods after being lost. There is a personal satisfaction and release in building a world of characters and places where adventures unfold, lives and loves flourish, and goodness wins. The ability to share this with readers is all the more rewarding.

With many of my projects and work of art, I've been told that the things I do are complicated and involved. My writing and plot development tends to be the same, and I think that adds to the enjoyment and impact for the reader. Writing to me is like cooking, and the addition of intriguing elements is like adding exotic spice. Double Mayhem has a large dose of action, a bit of humor, historical facts, the paranormal, romantic tension, and yes, a pinch of sex. Because of that, this fictional brew purposefully spans literary genres in that it is a mystery, a spy thriller, and a romance, thus appealing to a broad spectrum of audiences.

Different writers approach the creative process in different ways. Some work from detailed outlines, some just start writing, and some have only the beginning and end in mind. Even though I start with a rough outline, I let the characters and plot evolve, taking me places I did not plan to go. It becomes a discovery for me, which is part of the thrill of writing. It's like reading a mystery, but from the inside out. That was the process with Double Mayhem. As I started introducing characters and writing their dialogue, how they reacted to one another and logically demanded responses from one another led me down avenues I had not anticipated. The family of characters in this Seekers Mysteries debut is diverse and extensive, each with their own quirks and unique histories. Each became real to me, and I could see future books revolving around them. I wanted to know more about them myself, but the book of course had to have an ending. This first saga is more than a simple mystery, a story of a hapless heroine sucked into a vortex of crime; it is a chronicle of beginnings for characters and new worlds.
