Review: Bolero by Joanie McDonell

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Bolero by Joanie McDonell. A Nick Saylor Mystery.

Review summary: The supporting cast of characters is probably the best element of this crime novel, with a (now stereotypical) flawed private investigator as its series lead. The uneven plot takes a somewhat cookie-cutter approach to the prototypical serial killer storyline, though does include a couple of twists. This series would seem to have potential, but this book isn't the promising start it could have been. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Nick Saylor Mystery
Thomas & Mercer (May 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Despite his bronze star with its prized V for valor, Nick Sayler was once a thief, junkie, and prime suspect in a murder case. Now he's a mostly changed man, a private investigator with a long list of rich clients and a good life. But even after ten years there's not enough whiskey in the world to wash away acid-etched memories of Julia Carteret, the beautiful woman who took a bullet meant for him.

He never expected a second chance to make things right until he got a midnight call from a distraught young doctor and a plea from a fragile dancer with no money, no memory, nothing in her pocket except Sayler's card, and the number 44 carved across her back. With bewitching violet eyes she looks so much like Julia, Sayler thinks keeping her safe could put him back on the road to redemption. But not long after he takes her home to his Hudson River barge, he learns that she has a past as dark as his own, and soon he's protecting her from a patient sociopath with seemingly preternatural power to be in two places at once.

Sayler needs his wingman Meriwether, the brilliant savant, and his restless backup, Tommy Fallon NYPD homicide, whose dicey investigative methods keep them under the radar, which is the only place to be when Sayler taunts danger. As he nears old secrets linking the dancer to a strange group: a voluptuous redhead, a concert pianist, a skateboarder, and a Polish nanny, he starts to learn why the murderer's sex-stoked obsession can't end until the girl is dead. When the killer who never sleeps gets the best of an exhausted Sayler on an isolated island off the coast of Connecticut, in Manhattan's meatpacking district, and on the streets of Harlem, smart money might bet both ways, except for one sure thing: in spite of his bad leg and worse habits, no matter what the cost, Nick Sayler will not let another woman die.

Telemystery: 11/22/63 by Stephen King to be Optioned for Television

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Warner Bros., though J. J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot, is expected to option Stephen King's 2011 time-travel thriller 11/22/63 to be adapted for a cable television series or, more likely, mini-series. (More about the book, below.)

11/22/63 was both a commercial and critical success for the author; it was named as the winner of the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the mystery/thriller category and won a Thriller Award from the ITW in 2012 for Best Novel.

11/22/63
Stephen King

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

Jake Epping is a thirty-five-year-old high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching adults in the GED program. He receives an essay from one of the students — a gruesome, harrowing first person story about the night 50 years ago when Harry Dunning's father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a hammer. Harry escaped with a smashed leg, as evidenced by his crooked walk.

Not much later, Jake's friend Al, who runs the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to 1958. He enlists Jake on an insane — and insanely possible — mission to try to prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jake's new life as George Amberson and his new world of Elvis and JFK, of big American cars and sock hops, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake's life — a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

A storm is coming …

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday's bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined — it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing — an epic war for the very soul of America — and that he is standing squarely in its path.

NBC has only a handful of Prime Time Crime shows on its schedule, and today it renewed two of them for additional seasons: Law & Order: SVU (its 15th) and Grimm (its 3rd).

Two other series not mentioned (yet) are Deception — almost certain to be canceled — and Hannibal, which is still new enough that it doesn't really have a track record yet, good or bad.

Review: Braking Points by Tammy Kaehler

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Braking Points by Tammy Kaehler. A Kate Reilly, Racing Mystery.

Review summary: The cast of characters in this racing-themed mystery are really quite extraordinary. Not surprisingly, the pace of the story is fast, too, quickly moving from one scene to the next, never veering far off-track, as it were. There is a nice balance of suspense and adventure to the story, one that will have readers anxiously anticipating the metaphorical finish line of the book. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Kate Reilly, Racing Mystery
Poisoned Pen Press (April 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Kate Reilly can't remember a worse time in her life, on-track or off. She wrecks her racecar at Road America in Wisconsin, sending a visiting NASCAR star to the hospital, and loses her cool on-camera, only to end the day by discovering her boyfriend with a friend of hers. A dead friend.

With little time to grieve, Kate finds herself the pariah of the racing world, the target of vicious e-mail messages, death threats, and a frenzy of blame on racing sites and blogs, including an influential, anonymous blogger who's trying to get her fired. But nothing is as bad as knowing her friend's killer is still out there — and aiming at Kate.

She's riding a roller coaster of emotion, juggling an exciting new sponsor, a boyfriend she's not sure she can trust, and new-found family she doesn't want to claim. Dodging unfavorable media attention and a pit reporter with a bias against women in racing, Kate redeems herself by delivering stunning performances behind the wheel at the next race: Petit Le Mans, the ten-hour endurance classic.

The championship race weekend and an undercurrent of threats on all sides rev Kate's nerves to their limits. From on-track action, to sponsor parties, to the Series awards banquet, she's part of the action, uncovering motives, secrets, and powerful ambitions.
