Cinemystery: Screenwriter to Adapt French Thriller Syndrome E

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

Paramount has tapped Mark Heyman (Black Swan) to adapt the bestselling French thriller Syndrome E for film, according to a report by Deadline.

The presumed first in a series, the novel introduces Lucie Hennebelle, a detective investigating the murder of a film restorer, who was working on a film that induced hysterical blindness in one of her friends. It was published in the US last August by Viking; read our review here.

No director or other production details were released by the studio.

Syndrome E by Franck Thilliez

Syndrome E
Franck Thilliez

This is the story of beleaguered detective Lucie Hennebelle, whose old friend has developed a case of spontaneous blindness after watching an extremely rare — and violent — film from the 1950s. Embedded in the film are subliminal images so unspeakably heinous that Lucie realizes she must get to the bottom of it — especially when nearly everyone who comes into contact with the film starts turning up dead.

Enlisting the help of Inspector Franck Sharko — a brooding, broken analyst for the Paris police who is exploring the film's connection to five murdered men left in the woods, Lucie begins to strip away the layers of what is perhaps the most disturbing and powerful film ever made. Soon Sharko and Lucie find themselves mired in a darkness that spreads across politics, religion, science, and art while stretching from France to Canada, Egypt to Rwanda, and beyond.

Review: Reunion at Red Paint Bay by George Harrar

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Reunion at Red Paint Bay by George Harrar.

Review summary: This is a rather uniquely constructed mystery that explores the magnitude of one's lies, guilt, and denial. The plot gradually ramps up the suspense, shifting the focus from one character to another, all the while deftly keeping the truth hidden. A good story and well told. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars

Reunion at Red Paint Bay
George Harrar
Other Press (January 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Red Paint calls itself "the friendliest town in Maine", a place where everyone knows one another and nothing too disturbing ever happens. Native son Simon Howe is a sturdy family man — a good father and husband — and owner-editor of the town's newspaper. Because there's rarely any real news, he runs stories about Virgin Mary sightings, high school reunions, and petty criminals.

One day Simon's predictable and peaceful life is disrupted by the arrival of an anonymous postcard, the first in a series of increasingly menacing messages. He tries to ignore them, but the implied danger becomes more real, threatening to engulf his wife and son as well. The Howe family becomes engaged in a full-scale psychological battle with their unidentified stalker — without even knowing it. Secrets from Simon's past are uncovered, escalating toward a tense and unexpected climax.

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

This title is included on this month's list of 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or less.

Summer, 1954. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels has come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Along with his partner, Chuck Aule, he sets out to find an escaped patient, a murderess named Rachel Solando, as a hurricane bears down upon them.

But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems.

And neither is Teddy Daniels.

Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe's radical approach to psychiatry? An approach that may include drug experimentation, hideous surgical trials, and lethal countermoves in the shadow war against Soviet brainwashing …

Or is there another, more personal reason why he has come there?

As the investigation deepens, the questions only mount:

• How has a barefoot woman escaped the island from a locked room?
• Who is leaving clues in the form of cryptic codes?
• Why is there no record of a patient committed there just one year before?
• What really goes on in Ward C?
• Why is an empty lighthouse surrounded by an electrified fence and armed guards?

The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane.

A Frank Boff Mystery
Publisher: Endless String

What would you do if your best friend was killed right in front of you, and the assassin fled without a trace and was never found? Would you wait forever for justice to run its course, or take it into your own hands?

What would you do if you were a private investigator specializing in defending indicted felons but was forced to switch to the other side of the street to hunt down a killer? If your family is threatened along the way, and someone tries to kill you, would bringing the murderer to justice satisfy you? Or would you want something more?

Welcome to the murky world of boxer Danny Cullen and former legendary DEA agent Frank Boff, a world where the line between right and wrong gets bent out of shape and the only real satisfaction is vengeance.

They are the unlikeliest of teams. Cullen is a disciplined professional boxer who plays by the rules. Boff is a maverick investigator who believes anything goes as long as he doesn't get caught doing it. They have nothing in common except the mission: find out who killed Cullen's best friend, world champion boxer Julio Babbas.

Neither attempts to hide their disdain for each other. But like it or not, they find themselves travel partners on a journey into a Shadow World where Cullen's friend lived and died. What they find there shocks Cullen and eventually pulls him over to the Dark Side, a place Boff calls home. Constantly in conflict, they find a common ground: find the killer and seek a punishment more just than justice.
