Telemystery: First Trailer for Netflix's Hemlock Grove

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

A new trailer has been released by Netflix for its original supernatural thriller Hemlock Grove (embedded below).

Based on the novel of the same title by Brian McGreevy, the storyline is centered on a Pennsylvania steel town, whose residents are investigating the murder of a 17-year-old girl.

The 13-episode series, which stars Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell, Freya Tingley, and Dougray Scott, will begin streaming on April 19th, 2013.

The body of a young girl is found mangled and murdered in the woods of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania, in the shadow of the abandoned Godfrey Steel mill. A manhunt ensues — though the authorities aren't sure if it's a man they should be looking for.

Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a foreboding biotech facility owned by the Godfrey family — their personal fortune and the local economy having moved on from Pittsburgh steel — where, if rumors are true, biological experiments of the most unethical kind take place. Others turn to Peter Rumancek, a Gypsy trailer-trash kid who has told impressionable high school classmates that he's a werewolf. Or perhaps it's Roman, the son of the late JR Godfrey, who rules the adolescent social scene with the casual arrogance of a cold-blooded aristocrat, his superior status unquestioned despite his decidedly freakish sister, Shelley, whose monstrous medical conditions belie a sweet intelligence, and his otherworldly control freak of a mother, Olivia.

Telemystery: DCI Banks Syndicated to US Public Television

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Last month we mentioned that crime novelist Peter Robinson had announced that the ITV series based on his character, DCI Banks, would be appearing on PBS stations here in the US. At the time, no mention was made on the PBS website about the series, but the series has been airing on an ad hoc basis on a number of stations throughout the US.

Now we're learning that BBC Worldwide America has officially announced a syndication deal with 166 public television stations for the series.

Julius Cain, Vice President, PBS Sales, BBC Worldwide America, said: "DCI Banks is a terrific and suspenseful show which we believe will attract a wide range of viewers in the U.S. This syndication deal marks the largest we have inked to date between BBC Worldwide America and public television stations and is evidence of the great interest in the top-notch and skillfully produced programs we offer our clients."

Stephen Tompkinson stars as Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks on his passionate and relentless journey in pursuit of criminals and justice, which inevitably leads him to take dark and treacherous paths to solve crimes. The deal includes the pilot and first two seasons of the series, episodes of which have been adapted from Robinson's novels. A third series has been commissioned by ITV, but has not yet begun production.

Gangster Squad Opens in Theaters January 11th

Gangster Squad. Opens in theaters January 11, 2013.

Gangster Squad (2013)

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and — if he has his way — every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop … except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from an adapted screenplay by Will Beall, and based on the book Gangster Squad by Paul Lieberman.

Running time: 113 minutes. Rated R for strong violence and language.

Watch a trailer for the film below:

Gangster Squad by Paul Lieberman

Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad chronicles the true story of the secretive police unit that waged an anything-goes war to drive Mickey Cohen and other hoodlums from Los Angeles after WWII.

In 1946, the LAPD launched the Gangster Squad with eight men who met covertly on street corners and slept with Tommy guns under their beds. But for two cops, all that mattered was nailing the strutting gangster Mickey Cohen. Sgt. Jack O'Mara was a square-jawed church usher, Sgt. Jerry Wooters a cynical maverick. About all they had in common was their obsession. So O'Mara set a trap to prove Mickey was a killer. And Wooters formed an alliance with Mickey's budding rival, Jack "The Enforcer" Whalen. Two cops — two hoodlums.

Their fates collided in the closing days of the 1950s, when late one night "The Enforcer" confronted Mickey and his crew. The aftermath would shake both LA's mob and police department, and signal the end of a defining era in the city's history.

Telemystery: Promotional Poster for NBC's Deception

Deception (NBC, January 2013)

Not only did we miss this promotional poster for NBC's new mystery series Deception (right; click for slightly larger image) … but we missed the premiere as well! (We intend to catch it on demand.) The poster's tagline: "To find the truth she'll become a lie."

When wealthy socialite and notorious party girl Vivian Bowers is found dead of an overdose, no one is really surprised. The heiress to the Bowers pharmaceutical empire has been tabloid fodder for years: wild, pretty, privileged … and now dead at the age of 32. But for FBI agent Will Moreno (Laz Alonso), things don't add up with this suspicious dynasty. Convinced the troubled girl's death was a homicide, he has a clever plan to get to the truth.

Her name is Detective Joanna Locasto (Meagan Good). Twenty years ago she was Vivian's best friend and practically grew up inside the Bowers' home. And when she appears at Vivian's funeral, the family re-embraces her and no one is the wiser. Joanna quickly begins to uncover dark secrets and clues about why Vivian's life was very much in danger. At the same time, she rekindles an old romantic relationship and rediscovers the allure of the luxurious lifestyle she once knew. She's about to see once again just how the other half lives … and dies.

Deception airs on Mondays at 10 PM ET/PT.

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Death in the Memorial Garden by Kathie Deviny.

Review summary: There are many elements of this mystery that are quite appealing, including a narrative that is written with an appropriately light touch with a good amount of humor. And yet it all doesn't seem to gel together well, in part due to too many points of view and a lack of focus on the titular crime. (Click here for text of full review.)

New Mexican Poster for Alex Cross

Alex Cross (Mexico, 2013)

The film Alex Cross has come and gone from theaters here in the US, but we stumbled across a Mexican poster (right; click for larger image) for the film labeled "próximamente" — soon. We can't find a release date on IMDB so we're not sure if the film has played in Mexico or not.

Anyway, we rather like the contrast in images presented, good versus evil, as it were. The film is subtitled, "En la mente del asesino" — In the mind of the assassin.

We haven't seen Alex Cross yet, but will do so when it comes on on video. The DVD/Blu-ray versions are scheduled to hit stores on February 5th; it will also be available from Netflix during February.

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Invisible Murder by Lene Kaaberbøl and Agnete Friis. A Nina Borg Crime Novel.

Review summary: The primary crime in this Danish mystery is intricately devised, but is often overshadowed by numerous tangential storylines, at least a couple of which don't add much value to the story. Fans of the first book in this series may well take to this one, too, but others may find it to be difficult to follow and enjoy. (Click here for text of full review.)

Telemystery: BBC America to Air ITV's Murder Mystery Broadchurch

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

BBC America has acquired the US broadcast rights to the ITV murder mystery drama Broadchurch.

David Tennant, Olivia Colman, and Vicky McClure star in this 8-part series that explores what happens to a small community when it suddenly becomes the focus of a murder investigation.

"Broadchurch focuses on a small British community which finds itself at the eye of a storm," says Chris Chibnall, who created and wrote the series. "In the wake of one boy's death, the residents of Broadchurch come under scrutiny and suspicion. It's a story of scale and intimacy, as the lives of the characters are laid bare."

David Tennant takes the role of Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, an out-of-town, newly promoted police detective who takes the job local Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) believes should have been hers.

Ellie has to find reserves of patience and toughness to negotiate a professional relationship with the difficult and unyielding Hardy. Yet as the drama progresses, Hardy's own secrets are laid bare.

Broadchurch will premiere on ITV later this Spring, and will be part of BBC America's Dramaville later this year.

Telemystery: An Amish Murder, a Lifetime Telemovie, Premieres Sunday January 6th

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Tomorrow, Sunday January 6th at 9 PM (ET/PT), Lifetime airs An Amish Murder, a made-for-television adaptation of the first mystery in the "Kate Burkholder" series by Linda Castillo. (More about the book, below.)

The peaceful Amish farming community of Painter's Mill, Ohio, is shattered when a series of brutal murders leaves the town with a sense of frailty and loss of innocence. Among the most affected by the tragedy was Kate Burkholder (Neve Campbell), a young girl who survived the terror and, as a result, left the Amish life behind. Fifteen years later, Kate returns to Painter's Mill as its Chief of Police. Certain she's come to terms with her past, Kate's renewed life in her hometown is shattered when a murder investigation triggers deep-seated emotions from her childhood and exposes a dark secret that could destroy her.

Depending on ratings, of course, but this telemovie could also serve as the pilot for a potential weekly series based on the character. Castillo has written four books in the series (to date), giving the screenwriters plenty of material from which to draw upon.

Watch a preview for An Amish Murder below.
