Until she tells him something that makes his heart pause and his jaw drop.

Are the Harvest Angels, the white supremacist militia that Colt shut down three years ago, back in business?

Colt makes the trip to the mountains and soon thinks he has it solved: typical copycat case. Unfortunately, another unimaginable atrocity is waiting for him back home in Florida. Colt walks into a bloodbath, and he soon realizes nothing is typical and nothing is solved.

While relentlessly hunting down those responsible, Colt is abducted, drugged, and brainwashed before he can alert the authorities. Now he is a pawn in a heinous scheme that is bigger, badder, and literally more earth-shattering than he could have possibly anticipated.

Half-gypsy detective Eoin Miller finds people for a living—usually people who would do anything to remain hidden. Ironic considering Eoin has done all he can to lose himself in a downward spiral that has cost him his job, his respect, his wife, and anything else that ever mattered. But he's not inclined to dwell on what he's given up, and Eoin prefers it that way.

Then he meets Mary, a hard-drinking woman on the run who confides that she's stolen a valuable item, one that certain people would kill to get back. The two of them seek a temporary—and incomplete—solace in each other's arms, only for Mary to turn up as a corpse in Eoin's bed the next morning, him asleep on the sofa.

Recalling his father's aversion to authority, Eoin runs from the body, but he hates a mystery and is driven to discover the truth behind Mary's murder, even if it means putting his own life on the line. Before long, Eoin's tangled up in a ferocious turf war that has him playing his former allies and employers—crime lords, drug dealers, cops, and politicians—against each other.

Review: Last Lawyer Standing by Douglas Corleone

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Last Lawyer Standing by Douglas Corleone. A Kevin Corvelli Mystery.

Review summary: This sharply written legal thriller has Honolulu criminal defense attorney Kevin Corvelli at his best in the courtroom, but even his action scenes are well scripted and executed, helped mostly by the presence of a new — and hopefully recurring — character. A Kevin Corvelli Mystery
Minotaur Books (August 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Defense attorney Kevin Corvelli fled from New York to Hawaii after the sensational death of one of his clients three years ago. Now, in the wake of another client’s death — a client Kevin had fallen in love with — Kevin would run again if only he could pull himself free from a couple of high-profile, high-risk cases. The FBI is investigating the poisoning of a young woman who happened to be Governor Wade Omphrey’s mistress. The governor was off the island at the time, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t order the hit or that he doesn’t need a hotshot lawyer like Corvelli defending him.

Then the DEA raids a local meth lab and Turi Ahina is picked up in the sweep. A career criminal, Ahina has set Corvelli up with plenty of client referrals, but Corvelli owes him for much more than that ever since Ahina saved his life. Now Ahina’s only way out is to turn in the big man, and he can’t just tell the FBI who it is—they already know that. He needs to find him and set a trap, a trap that won’t succeed without Corvelli’s help. The plan is simple, as foolproof and dangerous as a suicide attempt.

As the stakes rise, Corvelli gets drawn in deeper and deeper until the only way he can escape is to stick it out to the end …

The last thing Louis Rosen expected of his son, Billy, was that he would volunteer for the draft after graduating from Harvard in 1949 with highest honors; and the last thing Billy expected of his father was that he would become a partner in a criminal enterprise known as "Furax Unlimited." Yet, when these two events unexpectedly collide and connect, Billy's life is changed forever.

The Furax Connection chronicles Billy's struggle for survival during his initial weeks in uniform when, unwittingly, he becomes entangled in a web of deceit and intrigue from which he must either extricate himself or suffer the shame and disgrace of a dishonorable discharge. That he survives at all is testimony not only to his resourcefulness and strength of purpose, but to his uncanny ability to forge relationships. And, as Billy struggles to survive, he discovers that, contrary to the civilian world of indifferent strangers he left behnd, the military is a close-knit family of good and decent people who unselfishly care for their own.

Maggie Flynn’s simple country wedding in West Virginia’s enchanting Canaan Valley is everything her aunts hoped for, and Andrea Flynn and Kathleen Williamson are looking forward to a joyful weekend celebration. Murder is the last thing on anyone’s mind, but when one guest has multiple enemies present, it becomes a reality. Poison in a late-night cup of tea proves fatal, and it’s obvious that plenty of family members and their friends have reason to want the victim dead.

When a second murder occurs, members of the wedding party become even more certain that a killer is stalking the halls of the Alpenhof Hotel where they’re staying. Andrea and Kathleen join forces with Sheriff Ward Sterling to figure out who’s killing the guests in this quiet mountain resort. And there are clues — or are they just red herrings? A book of poetry, a flower garden, and artificial fingernails are among the discoveries the sisters discuss with the sheriff.

They’re hoping the investigation won’t put their lives in danger, but security at the hotel is lax and door locks are flimsy. If the sisters can dig up enough clues, maybe they can solve the puzzle before the killer takes aim at them. However, at bedtime they’re bracing their door with the back of a chair … just in case.

Sutton by J. R. Moehringer

(13): Sutton
J. R. Moehringer

Born in the squalid Irish slums of Brooklyn, in the first year of the twentieth century, Willie Sutton came of age at a time when banks were out of control. If they weren't taking brazen risks, causing millions to lose their jobs and homes, they were shamelessly seeking bailouts. Trapped in a cycle of bank panics, depressions and soaring unemployment, Sutton saw only one way out, only one way to win the girl of his dreams.

So began the career of America's most successful bank robber. Over three decades Sutton became so good at breaking into banks, and such a master at breaking out of prisons, police called him one of the most dangerous men in New York, and the FBI put him on its first-ever Most Wanted List.

But the public rooted for Sutton. He never fired a shot, after all, and his victims were merely those bloodsucking banks. When he was finally caught for good in 1952, crowds surrounded the jail and chanted his name.

It was more than need or rage at society that drove Sutton. It was one unforgettable woman. In all Sutton's crimes and confinements, his first love (and first accomplice) was never far from his thoughts. And when Sutton finally walked free — a surprise pardon on Christmas Eve, 1969 — he immediately set out to find her.
