Brazilian Poster for Taken 2

Taken 2 (Brazil, 2012)

We're really taking — excuse the pun — to this series of posters for Taken 2. Earlier today we had a US version (together with the international trailer) and now here's the Brazilian version (right; click for larger image). The Portguese title is Busca Implacável 2 — Relentless Search 2. The poster's tagline: Eles querem vingança. Mas escolheram o cara errado. ("They want revenge. But they chose the wrong guy.")

Shown pondering his next step, with the merest hint of a gun in his right hand, Liam Neeson reprises his role as Bryan Mills, who in this film is taken hostage during his family's vacation in Istanbul. Bryan enlists the aid of his daughter, Kim, to help them escape, and uses an advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one.

Directed by Olivier Megaton from a screenplay by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, Taken 2 opens on October 5th, 2012.

Calamity Jayne by Kathleen Bacus

Calamity Jayne by Kathleen Bacus
Publisher: Love Spell

This is the first mystery, of five published, in this series.

About Calamity Jayne (from the publisher): Tressa Jayne Turner has had it up to here with the never-ending string of dumb-blonde jokes and a longtime nickname that's harder to get rid of than lint from a belly button. Dubbed "Calamity Jayne" by Iowa Department of Natural Resources officer, Rick Townsend, Tressa's out to gain a little hometown respect — or die trying.

Unfortunately, that may be the case. She's just been handed the perfect opportunity to get "Ranger Rick," the doubting Don Juan of the DNR, and a sketpical citizenry to take her seriously. How? By solving a murder no one else believes happened … No one, that is, except the killer.

Gutshot Straight by Lou Berney

Gutshot Straight by Lou Berney
Publisher: HarperCollins

This special ebook edition also includes a sneak peek of the author's next book, Whiplash River, scheduled to be published in July 2012.

About Gutshot Straight (from the publisher): When Charles "Shake" Bouchon, professional wheel man, walks out of prison after a three-year stretch for grand theft auto, he's got only two problems: he's too nice a guy for the life he's led and not nice enough for any other.

So he says yes when he's asked to run a simple errand for his former boss and lover, Alexandra Ilandryan, the formidable pakhan of the Armenian mob in Los Angeles. All Shake has to do is deliver a package to Las Vegas and pick up a briefcase.

Only the package turns out to be a wholesome young housewife named Gina whose husband has run afoul of Dick Moby, aka "The Whale," an unpleasant four-hundred-pound Vegas strip-club owner. Shake hates to think what's going to happen to Gina when he delivers her to The Whale, so in a move that's as noble as it is boneheaded, he decides to set her free.

Now Shake and Gina are on the run to Panama, hoping to unload the very valuable — and highly unusual — contents of The Whale's briefcase. Shake could end up a rich man, but first he'll have to outmaneuver two angry crime bosses, a murderous Armenian thug plagued by erectile superfunction, a former pro football player who blames Shake for his romantic woes, and a billionaire swindler with a flair for the theatrical. Not to mention, and not the least, Shake will need to survive his own heart, since he's going to discover that wholesome housewife Gina is even more intriguing, and a lot more complicated, than he ever imagined.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Books Priced $2.99 or Less (120630)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

A couple of notes before we get to this week's new additions.

• It's always good to check in periodically with Poisoned Pen Press. This week we found five mysteries in the "Posadas County" series by Steven F. Havill that have recently been reduced to $2.99 or less; one, the first in series, is $0.99.

• Another specialty mystery publisher, Oceanview Publishing, frequently rotates its selection of titles priced $2.99 or less. We added the "Sammy Greene" mysteries by Deborah Shlian and Linda Reid to our list this week.

Bell Bridge Books publishes mostly romance novels, but a handful of their authors also write mysteries and romantic suspense. It isn't often we see any of their Kindle books in our "price range", but there is one this week, Mai Tai One On, the first mystery in the "Em Johnson, Tiki Goddess" series by Jill Marie Landis. Her new book in the series, Two to Mango, was just published. (We're seeing a tropical "numbered" theme going on here!)

Below are listed the new $2.99 or less titles we added today; click on the cover or title for more information or to purchase the Kindle edition.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.

Book Trends: Reviews of Young Adult and Children Books

Book Trends, a review site for young adult and children books, published several new book reviews this past week. We're presenting here a summary of those in the mystery/suspense/thriller category.

The Nightmare Garden by Caitlin Kittredge. The Iron Codex Book Two. Lexile measure: N/A. Reviewed by a 6th grade student, who writes, "Many books seem very realistic, but not if they involve magic; unless, the story is in the future and written by Kaitlin Kittredge. She somehow twists and manipulates the idea of magic until it seems like reality." (Read the full review of this fantasy/suspense novel here.)

The Dead Gentleman by Matthew Cody. Lexile measure: N/A. Reviewed by a 6th grade student, who writes, "This book has a lot of detail and the characters are highly developed. The mix between science fiction and fantasy is also perfect. I definitely hope that Matthew Cody writes another book to make it a series." (Read the full review of this sci-fi fantasy/suspense novel here.)
