Red Bones by Ann Cleeves to be Adapted for Television

Red Bones by Ann Cleeves

The "Shetland Quartet" of crime novels by Ann Cleeves are being developed into a crime drama for BBC One.

In what is likely to be considered a "pilot", Shetland will be adapted from the third book in the series, Red Bones. Douglas Henshall has been cast in the lead role of Detective Jimmy Perez, recently widowed, a native Shetlander who has returned home after a long spell away. When a young archaeologist discovers a set of human remains, the island community is intrigued to know if it's an ancient find or a contemporary mystery. And when an elderly woman is shot on her land in a tragic accident, Perez and his team find themselves at the center of two feuding families whose envy, greed and bitterness has divided the surrounding community.

"I'm delighted that my old friends from ITV Studios have teamed up with the BBC to create a television adaptation of the Jimmy Perez book Red Bones," said Cleeves. "I couldn't be in safer hands. And it's brilliant that the UK now has its own Nordic TV drama!"

The first book in the quartet, Raven Black, was the winner of the 2006 CWA Gold Dagger Award.

Ann Cleeves is also the author of the "Vera Stanhope" mysteries, which have been adapted by ITV into the series Vera.

About In Deep Voodoo (from the publisher): There's something strange afoot in the small town of Mojo, Louisiana. Yet even as the annual voodoo festival gets underway, Penny Francisco, who runs a health food business, refuses to believe in black magic. Her mind is on celebrating her divorce from her lying, cheating husband Deke.

Fueled by run-ins with her ex-mother-in-law and Deke's busty mistress, Penny is eager for the "emancipation party" her friends plan. When she receives a Deke voodoo doll as a gag gift, she sticks it with a pin as a joke. But when Deke winds up fatally stabbed, the police aren't laughing.

A junk-food junkie P.I. offers his services, and although Penny is wary of the sexy Cajun's motives (and his diet), she's desperate. Dodging a media sideshow and a looming murder rap, Penny realizes that somehow she's landed herself in deep voodoo.

For three years, she teaches others to paint and ignores the reality that without the color and light she lives to create, her spirit grows thin. The Deal by Adam Gittlin

The Deal by Adam Gittlin
Publisher: Oceanview Publishing

In our review of this book, we said, "[This] is a fast paced financial thriller with a perplexing plot that is riddled with schemes and conspiracies. The author clearly knows the ins and outs of the commercial real estate business and brings them to life here in ways that seem fantastic yet plausible."

About The Deal (from the publisher): Everything about Jonah Gray screams success—expensive clothes, a Park Avenue penthouse, and a seven-figure income. A cutthroat, rainmaking New York City commercial real estate broker, Jonah craves opulence and power. He beds models, romps the globe on weekends, and sees the world as his for the taking. Jonah Gray has it all. Or at least, he had it all.

When Andreu Zhamovsky, a close family friend, presents Jonah with the deal of a lifetime, Jonah jumps at the chance. All Jonah has to do is act quickly, invest half a billion dollars in prime NYC office buildings, and collect a huge payoff.

But there is much more to this deal than Jonah had ever contemplated, and this golden opportunity turns out to be anything but.

Along with this deal comes one of the world's rarest and most valuable antiques planted in Jonah's briefcase, and within days of signing on, Jonah is mysteriously thrust into the epicenter of an international and personal scandal.

Forced to explore a whole new territory where he can trust no one, and where danger, death, and deception lurk at every corner, Jonah will learn some painfully hard lessons about the quest for true wealth.

Taking risks has been the hallmark of Jonah's career. But this time, the stakes are much, much higher and Jonah will put everything—and everyone—he loves at risk.

Closing this deal could mean losing it all.

MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Books Priced $2.99 or Less (120505)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

Shown below are some of the new titles we added today.

A couple more notes. As of today, Poisoned Pen Press's April selection of 99 cent mystery ebooks are still available at this price point … though they will revert to their standard price any day now. We're hoping that the publisher will come out with a new "May" list soon.

Also … check out this selection of titles from StoneHouse Ink. We didn't add any of these titles to our list this week but wanted to make sure you were aware of this interesting and diverse selection of mysteries and thrillers.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.
