Review: Sheriff Luis Gonzalo investigates the circumstances that led to the brutal beating and rape of a 16-year-old girl in Blackout in Precinct Puerto Rico, the fifth mystery in this series by Steven Torres.

Gonzalo is awakened in the middle of the night by screams coming from the street. Quickly locating their source, he finds a local girl, Luisa Ferre, naked and badly bruised. Asking his wife to take Luisa to the hospital, he comes to the conclusion that if he can find the girl's clothes by backtracking in her steps, he'd find the crime scene ... and maybe have someone under arrest within a short period of time. His deputy had seen her just a few hours earlier at a party that he'd broken up, and Gonzalo sends him there as an alternate starting point for their investigation. But neither man can help consider that her drunken father may ultimately be the one arrested for the crime. With no physical evidence to prove his guilt, however, and with Luisa refusing to name her attacker, Gonzalo and his deputy discover their task is much harder than he initially thought.

Written in a rather spare, somewhat minimalist, manner, Blackout in Precinct Puerto Rico is at its best depicting the people involved with, the rural setting of, and the inevitable politics underlying a criminal investigation in Puerto Rico. The story is told from the author's perspective as narrator:

As [Deputy] Collazo based his opinion of the case on his recollection of Ferre's disposition in the hours before the attack, we should review the actions of the previous night before joining Sheriff Gonzalo in the fields of the valley.

This stylistic approach only works up to a point. Regardless of the character's point-of-view, there is always a sense of detachment, that someone else is telling the story. That the author keeps the focus on the investigation itself, though, helps keep the reader engaged. In the end, Blackout in Precinct Puerto Rico has a well thought out and developed plot with an unanticipated conclusion, two elements that typically result in a competent and satisfying crime novel.

Special thanks to St. Martin's Minotaur for providing a copy of Blackout in Precinct Puerto Rico for this review.

Review: The past becomes the present when long-hidden secrets come to light in A Stain on the Silence, a stand-alone mystery by Andrew Taylor.

James is a man in his 40s and happily married. One day he receives a phone call from St. Margaret's Hospice informing him that a patient there, Mrs. Lily Murthington, wants to see him. Lily is the mother of Carlo, a childhood friend ... and she was also James' first lover, when he was 15. James hasn't seen Lily or Carlo since she ended their affair some 24 years ago. With a flood of youthful -- and painful -- memories coming back to him, James visits Lily where he receives shocking news: their relationship produced a daughter, who Lily named Kate. But Kate is in trouble. The police think she has killed her live-in lover and are looking for her. She has no money and no place to stay. James suggests that she contact a lawyer, but Lily insists Kate needs her father ... a man she knows nothing about.

A Stain on the Silence is told in a series of flashbacks that help set the stage for the current situation. There is a sense that James may be remembering events somewhat differently than they actually happened -- for better or worse -- and the consequences of these memories may be relevant to the present. More plot-driven than character-driven, the story unfolds in a way that captures the reader's imagination. Though likely shelved as a mystery, which arguably it is, A Stain on the Silence should also appeal to those readers who appreciate a touching and captivating story, regardless of genre.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of A Stain on the Silence and to Hyperion for providing a copy of the book for this review.

The Glades, a New Crime Drama from A&E, Premieres July 13th

A&E Logo

Last February we reported that A&E had placed an order for 13 episodes of Sugarloaf, a crime drama set in rural Florida. Today The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the network has set a date for its premiere, now titled The Glades: Tuesday, July 13th at 10 PM (ET/PT).

A police procedural, The Glades stars Matt Passmore as Jim Longworth, an attractive, brilliant, yet hard to get along with homicide detective from Chicago who after being wrongfully accused of sleeping with his former Captain's wife and forced into exile. Longworth relocates to Sugarloaf, a sleepy small resort town in the middle of nowhere on the Gulf Coast of Florida where the sunshine and golf are plentiful and crime is seemingly at a minimum. Yet life in Sugarloaf is not as beautiful as it may seem.

In the pilot episode, the easy life quickly falls by the wayside when a decapitated, unidentifiable woman is found in a creek, begrudgingly dragging Longworth off the golf course in pursuit of her killer. Complicating matters more is his relationship with Callie (played by Kiele Sanchez), a quick-witted, beautiful med student with a 12 year-old son and a husband in prison. With a Titleist sitting on the fourteenth fairway waiting for him to break eighty for the first time in his life, Longworth needles, cajoles, and harangues everyone in his path, including his golf partner and department medical examiner Carlos (Carlos Gómez), as he puzzles out the facts surrounding the mysterious killing to try and identify the victim and bring her killer to justice.

Warner Bros. Considering Adaptation of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
More information about the book

Following the success of its filmed version of Sherlock Holmes, Pajiba is reporting that Warner Bros. is now preparing another period piece, an adaptation of the classic Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

According to the article, the studio has a script in hand but is keeping the plot details of their version under wraps.

Treasure Island is one of the very earliest books we can remember reading, being spellbound by the adventure and intrigue. Originally published in 1883 (serialized in the magazine Young Folks), the book has been made into numerous films and made-for-television movies.

About Treasure Island (from the publisher): "Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17 -- and go back to the time when my father kept the Admiral Benbow inn and the brown old seaman with the sabre cut first took up his lodging under our roof."

So begins Robert Louis Stevenson's cherished, unforgettable adventure that magically captures the thrill of a sea voyage and a treasure hunt through the eyes of its teenage protagonist, Jim Hawkins. Crossing the Atlantic in search of the buried cache, Jim and the ship's crew must brave the elements and a mutinous charge led by the quintessentially ruthless pirate Long John Silver. Brilliantly conceived and splendidly executed, it is a novel that has seized the imagination of generations of adults and children alike.

Review: Private investigator Louis Kincaid and his partner, ex-Miami police detective Mel Landeta, travel from the west coast of Florida to Palm Beach to assist in the defense of a young man accused of murdering his roommate in The Little Death, the 10th mystery in this series by P. J. Parrish.

Mark Durand's headless body was found in an isolated area just south of Lake Okeechobee. His roommate, Reggie Kent, is arrested for the crime. Reggie remembers Mel as someone who assisted him when he was in trouble years ago, and calls him now for help. Reggie is, as was Mark, a "walker", a good-looking young man who accompanies single (but not necessarily unmarried), wealthy women to high profile events. Reggie insists that sex is not part of the deal, but apparently Mark was more involved than Reggie thought. Louis and Mel start to believe a jealous husband may be the culprit, but then they learn of another headless body, also of an attractive young man who worked in Palm Beach, found five years earlier in a similar location. Then a third body turns up. The Palm Beach County police are reluctant to expand their investigation, believing Reggie guilty, so Louis and Mel proceed to build a case for them. But with potential witnesses unwilling to talk, Palm Beach being a small, insulated community, their efforts are proving to be difficult indeed.

The Little Death is a nuanced thriller with many layers, but also a somewhat uneven one. About midway through it makes an abrupt transition from a stylish whodunit-style murder mystery to a relatively routine, albeit intense, police procedural. Told mostly from the point of view of Louis Kincaid, the story moves along swiftly; even though the book exceeds 400 pages, it doesn't feel that long. The ending may disappoint some as the motivation for the crimes seems rather arbitrary and incompletely related; maybe that was intentional on the part of the author(s), to make them even more shocking, as if chopping off the young men's heads wasn't already. Still, The Little Death is a page-turner, with an open-ended conclusion that will have readers anticipating the next entry in the series. (Note to the author(s): bring back Andrew Swann; he may be deserving of a series all on his own.)

Special thanks to P. J. Parrish for providing an ARC of The Little Death for this review.

Review: A marketing executive becomes embroiled in a murder investigation that puts her life in jeopardy in Hush, a non-series thriller by Kate White.

Lake Warren's life was already in turmoil. She has recently begun a challenging assignment with a Park Avenue fertility clinic just as her husband moves out, seeking a divorce plus full custody of their two children. At a company dinner, she meets the handsome and sexy Dr. Mark Keaton, newly hired by the clinic, with whom she leaves at the end of the evening. They have a romantic interlude in his apartment after which they both fall asleep. She awakens in the middle of the night and goes out onto the terrace for some fresh air. Dozing off on one of the chaise lounges she wakes up sometime later, and returns to the bedroom to find that Keaton has been murdered, his throat slashed from one end to the other. She knows she should call the police, but her thoughts run to her children and the upcoming custody hearing. Gathering her belongings, she leaves. When the police come to question all who had known Keaton, Lake lies, saying she met him at the dinner the previous night but hadn't seen him since. But like many lies, Lake soon becomes entangled within them, and doesn't think she can maintain her charade much longer. Along with the police, she wonders who killed Keaton. But the question only Lake can ask herself: Did the killer know she was asleep on the terrace at the time of the murder?

The answer must be yes ... but maybe not. In the days following the murder, Lake receives suspicious phone calls late at night and her cat is taken, but returned completely shaved. These events could be related to her work with the clinic itself, which is having its own image problems (hence her employment). Unsure who she can trust, she begins her own investigation in an effort to identify the killer before she becomes a suspect -- or victim -- herself.

Hush is an electrifying thriller, with Lake Warren a compelling lead character, smart and resourceful. The anguish she feels is palpable, the fear for her safety balanced by the concern for her family. The narrative is well-paced, the subplots both relevant to the main storyline and contributing to the overall suspense. Readers will be hard-pressed not to complete this tensely written novel in one setting.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of Hush and to Authors on the Web for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): When Lake Warren learns that her husband, Jack, is suing for full custody of their two kids four months after their separation, she's pretty certain that things can't get any worse. The upside is that she's working with the Advanced Fertility Center as a marketing consultant, alongside the attractive, flirtatious Dr. Keaton. But the morning after their one-night stand, Lake finds Keaton with his throat slashed and discovers that things can indeed become worse—they can become deadly.

So as not to jeopardize her case for custody, Lake is forced to lie to the police. Having just been intimate with a man who has been murdered, and wanting to protect herself from being charged with the crime, she begins her own search for the truth. Meanwhile, the police start looking at her closely, people at the clinic start treating her with hostility, and strange clues begin dropping—quite literally—on her doorstep, and Lake realizes that she is dangerously close to dark secrets, both about Keaton and the clinic. But can Lake stop what she's started before it's too late?

Review: Milo and Jazz's grade school class comes up with an idea to host a haunted house for their community's Spring Thing, but the building they choose to use for the event may indeed be haunted in The Case of the Haunted Haunted House, the third early chapter mystery in this series by Lewis B. Montgomery and illustrated by Amy Wummer.

Milo and Jazz are detectives in training, who receive lessons in the mail from world-famous private eye Dash Marlowe and apply them to real-life mysteries. And they have one on their hands now! A temporary building on school grounds, which hasn't been used recently, is selected as the site of the class's haunted house. But word gets out that the building is inhabited by a spooky ghost, who can be seen at night prowling around. Milo and Jazz are skeptical. Jazz thinks it's just her older brother spreading false rumors; she has a bet with him on which of their classes can raise the most money ... and this is his way of steering people, especially kids from the younger grades, away from the haunted house. But when Milo and Jazz go exploring one night they see a mysterious light moving about in the abandoned school building. Could it really be haunted?

The Case of the Haunted Haunted House starts a tad slowly but builds up to an exciting finish. The lesson from Dash Marlowe involves using motive to solve a case, so Milo and Jazz go about putting themselves in the shoes (not literally, of course!) of their three primary suspects: Jazz's brother, a classmate who likes to play practical jokes, and another classmate who may be angry because her idea for the Spring Thing wasn't chosen. It's an effective way of introducing kids to deductive reasoning ... and a pretty good mystery too!

Like the previous books in the series, the final pages are filled with some really clever brain teasers. Though the book is intended for young readers, ages 5 to 7 or so, the puzzles at the end may be a little too challenging for them -- but that's a good thing, as it will help develop critical thinking skills. Parents may want to sit down with their children and help them work through the logic, as needed.

MBN Welcomes Michelle Boyajian, Author of Lies of the Heart

Mystery Books News: Authors on Tour

Mystery Books News is thrilled to welcome Michelle Boyajian as our guest blogger today. Michelle is the author of Lies of the Heart, her debut novel of psychological suspense that Publishers Weekly called "... seductive and riveting ...".

Michelle is also giving away a copy of Lies of the Heart to one of our readers. See the entry form at the bottom of this post.

— ◊ —

When I first started writing Lies of the Heart, I knew the central mystery of the book would focus on why Jerry LaPlante, a mentally handicapped man with the I.Q. of a ten-year-old child, would murder his speech pathologist. What I never expected was the sheer amount of curiosity people would have about my own brother, who was diagnosed with mental retardation at six months old. Most of them wanted to know if Jerry’s character was based on my brother, Joe, but even more simply wanted to know about Joe and how he views and operates within his world.

The early questions were easily answered: No, my brother isn’t a violent man, he isn’t terrified of God, and —as far as I know —he isn’t secretly plotting anyone’s imminent demise (this, disturbingly enough, disappointed more than one person). As for the similarities, I did base some of Jerry’s language tics on Joe’s speech patterns, and like Jerry, Joe loves cartoons and is never without his pad and pencils because he loves to draw —but the comparisons mostly end there. And yet the questions were still piling up the closer we came to the release date —again, about my brother, not the actual book, a true lesson in humility —so I decided to go straight to the source for answers.

I called Joe four days after Easter, and after he recited every item left in his Easter basket (a daily update that was confusing, given that there was always more rather than less in the basket) I asked if I could interview him.

Michelle Boyajian

“How come?” he said.
“People are curious about you because I wrote about a mentally handicapped man.”
“I not kill anyone,” he reminded me gravely.

After I assured him once again that he gave me permission to write about Jerry years ago, and that everyone knew that he absolutely did not kill anyone, nor have any plans to do so, he cheerfully complied and we began.

M: Why do you think some people are more interested in hearing about you rather than my book?
J: I not know. (a small giggle) Maybe cuz I better looking than you?
M: Joe.
J: Sorry, Mel. Hmmmmm. (more giggles) Maybe I take more showers? Not smell so bad as you?
M: Nice. Okay, next question. How would you describe yourself to someone?
J: I tall.
M: That’s it?
J: Very tall?
M: More please.
J: You bossy today. Okay. I love to work. I work very hard and I love to work hard and help anyone who needs me. I retarded, but that not the main thing.
M: What does that mean to you, “retarded.”
J: I not know. Different, but it not bug me most times. I am adult first. Smart first. Happy first.
M: That makes me really happy. Okay, so what is the happiest thing in your life?
J: My whole life. I happy I on earth. I happy about mom … her is up in heaven now. That a good place to be. With God.
M: What do you think about God? Who is God to you?
J: He strong. He a good person and help everyone. He come down on earth sometime and help you. He good-looking, like me, but he have power for everyone else. He keep everyone in heaven and every night he have dinner at his table with them. He come down sometime, but we not see him.
M: Why don’t we see him?
J: He want it that way. It better. He still come, we know it. We feel him, right?
M: You are so smart.
J: I know that.
M: But if God is so powerful, why do you think there are things like war?
J: War sad. God no like it. He can’t stop it all the time. Make me sad.
M: Why?
J: Cuz people shouldn’t kill each other. It not fair. They confused and won’t give up. They should give up. Not everyone take everything. People should be fair … Ask something good now, okay? Better?
M: What’s wrong with my questions?
J: Depressing!
M: Okay. Well, then, what about Santa Claus?
J (laughing): Oh, that guy!
M: What’s the deal with that guy?
J: You know! He come down at Christmas … from the North Pole. He have powers, like God, but he not God. Not that much power. Smaller kind.
M: When are you the most scared?
J: Uh-oh. Back to bad questions.
M: Please?
J (dramatic sigh): Okay. Ask again please.
M: When are you the most scared?
J: Stupid noises at night. (long pause, then giggling again). And sometime your face. It scare everyone it so ugly.
M: Nice. What makes you angry?
J: Um … your face?
M: No, really.
J: Ummmm, okay. Sometime at work I get mad. And rude people in cars.
M: And what do you do to calm down when you’re angry?
J: Sometime take a deep, deep breath. Tell myself to calm down. I not kill anyone.
M: I think we’ve established that already.
J: Just in case.
M: Do you ever get angry when you’re talking to people and they can’t understand you?
J: No, not really. I slow down when I talk. I start over. Talk slower. It a pain sometime, though. Better questions now. Please.
M: Fine. If there was one thing you could snap your fingers and do, what would it be?
J: Hit the jackpot.
M: Money?
J: No, jackpot of pads, pencils, rulers, erasers, cheeseburgers, chocolate ice cream. Like that.
M: That would be a messy jackpot.
J (dreamy): Perfect jackpot.
M: Okay, just a couple more. What do you think about this book I’ve written? Do you want to say anything about it?
J: Not really.
M: Do you remember that I read some parts to you?
J: Yeah, sort of.
M: And?
J: Um. Pretty boring.
M: Sheesh!
J: Sorry.
M: That’s all right. Okay, last question. Who is your most favorite person in the whole world? And I better like the answer to this one.
J: You, course!
M: Good answer.
J: I get one right?
M: You got them all right, buddy.
J: I smart like that, right?
M: Definitely.

It wasn’t until long after the interview ended that I realized why Joe was preoccupied with being mistaken for a character who could commit a murder: he didn’t want words like “retarded” or “handicapped” to define him, and he didn’t want to be lumped into an homogenous group with a title. It’s not the main thing, he said, and he was right.

Lies of the Heart by Michelle Boyajian
More information about the book

About Lies of the Heart: Less than a month after Katie Burrelli asks her husband Nick to move out of their home temporarily, he is shot at point-blank range by one of his speech pathology clients, a mentally retarded man with the IQ of a ten year-old child. Now, Katie sits inside the courtroom flooded by memories of Nick and full of vengeance towards Jerry LaPlante, the client she once loved like a son.

In chapters alternating between the past and present, Lies of the Heart unravels the truth behind Katie's and Nick's passionate relationship. Katie, long over- shadowed by her beautiful, successful sister, pins her emotional well-being on Nick, whose unpredictable rampages only fuel Katie's destructive insecurities. As the cracks in the relationship begin to appear, both Katie and Nick welcome Jerry into their family, hoping that by fixing him they can fix themselves.

But after Nick’s murder, Katie vows to help the prosecution convict Jerry, whose best interests she’d always promised to protect. But as she pushes forward and tries to dismiss the tender relationship she once shared with Jerry, she becomes more entangled with questions and uncertainties about her marriage, Jerry’s reasons for killing a man they both loved, and her own murky responsibility for Nick’s death.

Agatha Christie BBC Murders to be Performed on National Tour

Agatha Christie

Playbill is reporting that the Agatha Christie BBC Murders will be performed on a national tour prior to its debut on Broadway in 2011. The series of "lost" radio plays premiered last year at the International Mystery Writers' Festival.

Agatha Christie wrote four radio plays between 1937 and 1954. The most famous of these, "Three Blind Mice", a locked-room style murder mystery written in 1947, was the basis for a short story of the same title and the long-running stage play Mousetrap.

The others are "Yellow Iris" (1937), which was developed into the 1945 full-length novel Sparkling Cyanide; "Butter in a Lordly Dish (1948), which many believe to be Christie's least-known work; and "Personal Call" (1954), in which Inspector Narracott from her 1931 novel The Sittaford Mystery pays a return visit.

In the Agatha Christie BBC Murders, the plays are fully staged with sets and costumes. The tour will begin in Tacoma (WA) this fall, with Zev Buffman producing. Buffman will be the recipient of the 2010 Raven Award at this year's Edgar Awards banquet, held later this month, given by the Mystery Writers of America to recognize outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing.
