Review: Mick Herron crafts a tense mystery with a complex plot and attention-grabbing characters in Smoke and Whispers, his fifth novel of suspense.

The body of a middle-aged woman has been found in the River Tyne in Newcastle. Was it a suicide, an accident, murder? According to the possessions found on her by the police, the victim was a private investigator named Zoe Boehm. But is it Zoe Boehm? Sarah Tucker, who identifies the body, agrees it looked a lot like Zoe, but the body had been in the water for some time. But she feels there is something just not right.

Sarah knew Zoe was working for a mutual friend, Gerard Inchon. She knew also that Zoe had plans to continue her pursuit of a killer who went by the name of Alan Talmadge. Zoe had told Sarah that she had no idea of just how many women Talmadge had murdered but she was aware of the last two. Talmadge lured middle aged women with talk of love, and then tiring of them he would kill them and move on to the next. Had Zoe been his last victim? Not sure how to proceed, Sarah stays in Newcastle. Sarah believes Alan Talmadge is in Newcastle but not using that name. And there are other anomalies that pique her interest. The hotel’s bartender is posing as an Australian but clearly isn’t. Her friend Gerald is publicly supporting, even drumming up potential investors for, a medical researcher she knows he had a falling out with years ago. From cops to gangsters, Sarah winds her way through dilapidated shipyards and to Newcastle’s newest and swankiest areas. Although Sarah does not know who to trust she decides she can not leave until she discovers the truth -- no matter how perilous her journey.

Smoke and Whispers is an electrifying book that doesn’t let up from start to finish. The atmospheric setting, the intricately detailed, at times startling and unexpected, plot, and the compelling characters all come together to form a most original, satisfying suspense thriller.

Synopsis (from the publisher): When a body is hauled from the River Tyne, Sarah Tucker heads to Newcastle for a closer look. She identifies the dead woman as private detective Zoe Boehm, but putting a name to the corpse only raises further questions. Did Zoe kill herself, or did one of her old cases come back to haunt her? Why was she wearing a jacket a murderer had stolen years before? And what's brought Sarah's sparring partner Gerard Inchon to the same broken down hotel? Coincidence is an excuse that soon looks pretty unconvincing. Sarah can't leave until she's found the answers to her questions, however dangerous that might turn out to be.

The Afterword Interviews Mystery Author Chris Knopf

The Afterword on the National Post website has a Q&A with crime writer . Knopf's mystery series features Sam Acquillo, an ex-boxer, ex-corporate executive living in the Hamptons on Long Island.

When asked about the challenges of writing a series, Knopf replied, "The cool thing about having a cast of characters is that you have this entourage that are already there. I don't have to come up with another cop, I don't have to come up with another rich friend. I've got them. And I can develop them, which is fun, and show an arc of their experience." But it can have its limitations. "[H]ow many times can I describe (the setting) in a way that's still interesting? People say they love the setting, but I've already described it. How many words are in the English language and how many ways can I go at describing it and not seem like I'm just repeating myself?"

Knopf also reveals he's writing a spin-off series featuring Sam's lawyer, Jackie Swaitkowski.

[MBN note: Knopf's third novel in the Sam Acquillo series, Head Wounds, was listed as one of our best mysteries of 2008. Read our review here: . The fourth mystery in the series, Hard Stop, which we'll also be reviewing, is scheduled for publication next month.]

Mystery Book Review: A World I Never Made by James LePore

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of A World I Never Made by James LePore. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

Review: James LePore's debut novel, A World I Never Made, is an interesting and well-developed character study but ultimately disappoints as a novel of suspense.

Pat Nolan is summoned from the US to Paris to identify the remains of his estranged daughter, Megan, a purported suicide. Though the body is not of his daughter, he confirms it is. Suspicious he may be hiding something, the detective assigned to the case, Catherine Laurence, follows him. When Pat is attacked by two Arab men, she steps in, killing one and seriously wounding another who gets away. She subsequently learns the men are members of an Arab secret agency, and possibly terrorists. Puzzled by their interest in Pat, but also concerned for his safety, she takes him into unofficial custody. Together they seek to find Pat's daughter and learn why she may be the target of a terrorist organization.

Set at the start of 2004, the narrative alternates between activities of Pat and Catherine in the present and episodes in Megan's life from the previous year. The title, A World I Never Made, is probably intended to reflect the character's current situation but is somewhat misleading, possibly intentionally ironic. The three main characters do live in a world of their own making, by the choices they've made over a lifetime. Over the course of the book, they, in particular Pat and Catherine, spend a considerable amount of time reflecting, wondering how their lives might be different today had they done something otherwise in the past. Actions, or sometimes inactions, have consequences and the plot is largely derived from the conflicts within the characters themselves. The author cleverly frames their story within the context of the terrorist bombings of Casablanca in 2003 and Madrid in 2004.

The secondary characters are equally interesting, even though they receive far less attention. The gypsies, terrorists, and international government agents are all multi-dimensional, well drawn, and intriguing in their own way.

But there is little mystery or suspense here. The ending is foretold well in advance, and the action scenes are surprisingly subdued, many lasting barely a sentence or two, at most a paragraph or so. Finally, and somewhat oddly, the author introduces a paranormal element that almost seems to be an editing afterthought; it doesn't work at all.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Pat Nolan, an American man, is summoned to Paris to claim the body of his estranged daughter Megan, who has committed suicide. The body, however, is not Megan's and it becomes instantly clear to Pat that Megan staged this, that she is in serious trouble, and that she is calling to him for help.

This sends Pat on an odyssey that stretches across France and into the Czech Republic and that makes him the target of both the French police and a band of international terrorists. Joining Pat on his search is Catherine Laurence, a beautiful but tormented Paris detective who sees in Pat something she never thought she'd find--genuine passion and desperate need. As they look for Megan, they come closer to each other's souls and discover love when both had long given up on it.

Juxtaposed against this story is Megan's story. A freelance journalist, Megan is in Morocco to do research when she meets Abdel Lahani, a Saudi businessman. They begin a torrid affair, a game Megan has played often and well in her adult life. But what she discovers about Lahani puts her in the center of a different kind of game, one with rules she can barely comprehend. Because of her relationship with Lahani, Megan has made some considerable enemies. And she has put the lives of many--maybe even millions--at risk.

Review: Jon Talton, author of the David Mapstone mysteries, introduces a new series with ex-homicide detective Will Borders investigating a murder in the hospital where he's recuperating from back surgery in The Pain Nurse.

Borders is confined to a wheel chair and fears he may never walk again. Cheryl Beth Wilson is a pain management nurse, the only one of her kind at the hospital, working with him. Both are in the basement in the oldest part of the hospital at just about the same time, Cheryl Beth having been summoned by Dr. Christine Lustig who was in the process of working on a new program to put all the hospital records on computers, and Borders for an MRI, when Wilson finds Dr. Lustig naked on the floor, multiple stab wounds all over her body, her ring finger cut off. As Borders, who is being wheeled back to his room, passes the murder victim's open door, now a crime scene, he sees the body and her mutilated hand. This brings to mind his former investigation of the Mt. Adams strangler who, with the same MO, had killed at least three women years before. He wasn't convinced the arrested man was guilty, but the evidence against him was compelling. Was it possible the wrong man convicted of, and later executed for, the crime?

But Cheryl Beth Wilson is a "person of interest" for the murder, and Borders' ex-partner is investigating. She had recently ended an affair with the victim's ex-husband that started when they were still married. Borders, working through his pain with the help of Cheryl Beth, becomes convinced his former colleagues aren't looking in the right place, and sets out to prove his pain nurse's innocence and find the true killer.

Set in Cincinnati, The Pain Nurse is a well-crafted, well-paced mystery. Readers who have spent any time in a hospital, especially following major surgery, will appreciate the realism and detail depicted here. Even better are the characters of Will Borders and Cheryl Beth Wilson whose relationship, though based on mutual need, seems genuine and sincere. The Pain Nurse is a captivating story and a terrific introduction to this series; it is highly recommended.

(Reviewer's personal note: Cincinnati is my home town, and Jon Talton has captured the city beautifully. I lived in Price Hill and still have family in Oakley. It was a thrill to go back to the neighborhoods of my youth and see them again through the eyes of this author and his characters.)

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of The Pain Nurse and to Poisoned Pen Press for providing an ARC of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Cheryl Beth Wilson is an elite nurse at Cincinnati Memorial Hospital who finds a doctor brutally murdered in a secluded office. Wilson had been having an affair with the doctor’s husband, a surgeon, and this makes her a “person of interest” to the police, if not at outright suspect. But someone other than the cops is watching Cheryl Beth.

The killing comes as former homicide detective Will Borders is just hours out of surgery. But as his stretcher is wheeled past the crime scene, he knows this is no random act of violence. Instead, it has all the marks of a serial killer case he supposedly solved years before.

Rebuked by his former partner and unable even to walk, Borders starts to investigate. He teams up with Cheryl Beth, who is desperate to clear her name. But as the city teeters on the edge of violence and a killer grows closer, the two are running out of time to unlock the secrets of the murder and the brooding, old hospital.

Mystery Bestsellers for April 10, 2009

Mystery Bestsellers

A list of the top 15 for the week ending April 10, 2009 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

Last week's featured newcomer, Long Lost by , moves into second position this week. But the real news is that four new spring mystery titles enter the top 15.

About Face by Donna Leon

At number 7 is About Face, the 18th mystery featuring Venice Commissario Guido Brunetti by . Incinerators across the south of Italy are at full capacity, burning who-knows-what and releasing unacceptable levels of dangerous air pollutants, while in Naples, enormous garbage piles grow in the streets. In Venice, with the polluted waters of the canals and a major chemical complex across the lagoon, the issue is never far from the fore. Environmental concerns become significant in Brunetti’s work when an investigator from the Carabiniere, looking into the illegal hauling of garbage, asks for a favor. But the investigator is not the only one with a special request. His father-in-law needs help and a mysterious woman comes into the picture. Brunetti soon finds himself in the middle of an investigation into murder and corruption more dangerous than anything he’s seen before. Publishers Weekly calls the series "wickedly entertaining" and says of About Face, "Leon flawlessly melds the two plot threads as she parallels her characters' vulnerability with that of Venice."

Turn Coat by Jim Butcher

In 8th position is the 11th entry in The Dresden Files, Turn Coat by . The Warden Morgan has been accused of treason against the Wizards of the White Council -- and there's only one, final punishment for that crime. He's on the run, wants his name cleared, and needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. Someone like Harry Dresden. Now, Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less-than-agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head -- someone like Harry. Publishers Weekly says "Dresden investigates with his trademark sardonic noir flair," adding, "Despite the sprawling plot, both fans and newcomers will get into the fast-paced action."

Fatally Flaky by Diane Mott Davidson

At number 9 is Fatally Flaky, the 15th mystery in the Goldy Schulz culinary series by . It's been a long, rainy summer for the Colorado caterer, who is engaged in planning wedding receptions for what seems to be all of Aspen Meadow. It's bad enough that Billie Attenborough, the bride from hell, wants to move the location to the Gold Gulch Spa just a scant two days before tying the knot to her doctor fiancé. Then Doc Finn, best friend of Goldy's godfather Jack, is killed when his car tumbles into a ravine. But Jack thinks Doc was murdered because of research he was doing at the spa—allegations that are confirmed when Jack himself is attacked. So Goldy dons chef's whites and goes undercover at the spa. Add in the obstreperous owner, who years ago tried to sabotage Goldy's fledgling business, and she's got her hands full. Above all, there seems to be a clever killer on the spa grounds, watching her every move. After what befell Jack, Goldy knows that she might be next. Catering weddings, and cooking low-fat food, could be killing her—literally.

Borderline by Nevada Barr

Finally, arriving in 12th position is the 15th mystery in the Anna Pigeon series, Borderline by . The killings on Isle Royale have left Anna drained and haunted, her memories of her time with the wolf study group forever marred by the carnage on the island. Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, she is on administrative leave, per her superintendent's urging. Anna wonders if the leave might not be permanent, either by her own choice or that of the National Park Service. The one bright spot in Anna's life is Paul, her husband of less than a year. Hoping the warmth and the adventure of a raft trip in Big Bend National Park will lift her spirits, Paul takes Anna to southwest Texas, where the sun is hot and the Rio Grande is running high. The sheer beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert and the power of the river work their magic—until the raft is lost in the rapids and a young college student falls overboard, resulting in an even more grisly discovery. Caught in a strainer between two boulders and more dead than alive, is a pregnant woman, hair and arms tangled in the downed branches. Instead of the soul-soothing experience they'd longed for, Anna and Paul find themselves sucked into a labyrinth of intrigue that leads from the Mexican desert to the steps of the Governor's Mansion in Austin, Texas.

Review: Phyrne Fisher attends an exotic (and erotic) New Year's Eve celebration and attempts to prevent a Murder in the Dark, the 17th mystery in this series by Kerry Greenwood.

Phyrne doesn't particularly want to attend the multi-day event at the height of the summer. But the best way to get Phyrne to do something is to tell her she shouldn't, and when two threats, one quite deadly, appear on her doorstep strongly suggesting she skip party, she sets her mind not only to attend but to identify and deal with the person who seems so determined to keep her away. "The trickster will be at the party. And when I find him," she bared her teeth, "then he shall learn that I known a few tricks of my own." Upon arriving at the estate, she's quickly faced with two missing persons: a young lad and an even younger girl. Determined not to allow anything to happen to them, she sets out to discover why someone took them and if their disappearance has anything to do with the threats she received before arriving and the riddles she's getting once there.

Murder in the Dark is replete with all the intricate details that make this series so successful. A mix of over-the-top characters (such as the "Golden Twins", Isabella and Gerald Templar) and down-to-earth souls (like the head housekeeper, Mrs. Truebody) together in a colorful, entertaining environment. And of course there's Phryne's mystery man of the hour, Nicholas Booth. But the plot is a little sketchy and not fully developed. It's never made quite clear, for example, why Phyrne was sent the initial threats. And the riddles, while clever in and of themselves, really have little to do with anything other than as a pretext to leading Phyrne around in search of the next one. Finally, the conclusion ties up all the loose ends a bit too neatly and conveniently. Still, Murder in the Dark is fairly typical of the series; readers who have enjoyed the earlier adventures of Phryne Fisher will be pleased with this one as well.

At the Manor House, she is accommodated in the Iris room, and at the party dallies with two polo-playing women, a Goat lady (and goat), a large number of glamorous young men, and a very rude child called Tarquin.

The acolytes of the golden twins are smoking hashish and dreaming. The jazz is as hot as the drinks are cold. Heaven. It all seems like good clean fun until three people are kidnapped, one of them the abominable child, and Phryne must puzzle her way through the cryptic clues of the scavenger hunt to retrieve the hostages and save the party from further disaster.
