There is very little peace for a man with a body buried in his backyard. But it could always be worse …

More than a year ago, mild-mannered Jason Getty killed a man he wished he'd never met. Then he planted the problem a little too close to home. But just as he's learning to live with the undeniable reality of what he's done, police unearth two bodies on his property — neither of which is the one Jason buried.

Jason races to stay ahead of the consequences of his crime, and while chaos reigns on his lawn, his sanity unravels, snagged on the agendas of a colorful cast of strangers. A jilted woman searches for her lost fiancĂ©, a fringe dweller runs from a past that's quickly gaining on him, and a couple of earnest local detectives piece clues together with the help of a volunteer police dog — all in the shadow of a dead man who had it coming. As the action unfolds, each character discovers that knowing more than one side of the story doesn't necessarily rule out a deadly margin of error.

Catalina Island is only thirty miles from Hollywood as the crow flies. It's an idyllic place with colorful houses, shops, and a placid harbor full of boats owned by some of Hollywood's elite. But when Kate takes a leave of absence from her job and arrives on the island she soon realizes that the peaceful retreat has another side. Her friend's niece, Sissy, and her two best friends are all charged with murder and then kidnapped during the murder of a high profile attorney at the courthouse.

All signs point to Sissy and her friends being taken in by a sex trafficking ring. The stakes become even higher when the press learns that a deadly cult is active on the island and the deceased attorney may have been involved in one of Hollywood's most notorious murder cases known as The Fallen Angel.

Kate's best friends, Natalie and Mo, become involved in the case, creating havoc at every turn, while Kate works with Catalina Detective Buck McCade who's made his way to the island via Laredo, Texas. What follows is a high octane thrill ride as Kate and Buck try to solve a string of murders, save the girls, keep Kate's friends from meddling in things, and unravel a notorious murder and a secret that has haunted the island for over two decades.

Jane Kelly is through following men. She left Southern California for the murky quaintness of Lake Chinook, Oregon, apparently so she could trade her bartending skills for much more glamorous work process serving. And the boyfriend, of course, is long gone. But things have been looking a little brighter lately. Her hobby doing PI work is kind of fun, especially when she lands a real case — that pays real money.

But the case is about Bobby Reynolds, best friend of Tim Murphy, the only guy she's never gotten over. Everyone except Tim believed Bobby murdered his young family — isn't that why he vanished? Now Tim's coming home and Jane's on her way to talk to Bobby's father. Looks like Jane'll be trailing men after all — this time with a tape recorder and a camera. To top it off, she's being trailed by a homely pug named Binky, left to her by a distant relative. With a job she's learning as she goes along and her ex back in town, Jane's life just went from stress-free to completely stressed-out. And then there's the dead body …

When much-despised Marbury Marfan senior partner Simon Rafer turns up in a cold pool of blood with an ornate dagger in his back, it comes as a surprise to no one — least of all to Robert Tarza, who is first on the scene. A long-time partner at Marbury, Tarza knows dozens of attorneys in the firm who had good motive to want Rafer in the ground. But despite his own decades of conflict with Rafer — and a recent heated quarrel over a rare ancient coin Simon bought from him — Robert never imagined that homicide Detective Spritz would zero in on him as prime suspect.

As Spritz's case builds with uncanny speed, Robert quickly falls from his respected position at Marbury to a criminal being dragged through the tabloids. Along with his kick-butt defense attorney, Jenna James, he is forced to play detective in a race to find the real killer — and uncovers a web of fraud amongst his closest colleagues in the process. In the end, only Jenna's untested trial skills can keep him out of prison.
