For 25 years, she was enslaved by what she called the "Boogie Man" — images from her lost childhood that appeared in the shadows behind her reflection in mirrors and wine glasses, haunted her dreams and attacked her in screaming night terrors. Fear of facing that secret held her hostage. Like a schoolyard bully, it twisted her arm behind her back and forced her to accept that her life began in the dirt beside the ditch where the family station wagon burned like hell had opened up a crack in the world right there in the back seat.

Then the monster shattered her career.

And Anne saw him in her dying mother's eyes. With her last breath, Susan Mitchell begged for her daughter's forgiveness. She didn't mean for it to happen, she gasped, but she'll burn in hell for what she did all the same.

What did her mother do? Anne has to know.

So she has come home to a small Texas prairie town to live with her crazy grandmother in the rambling old house where she grew up to take her stand against the Boogie Man. But Anne isn't really prepared for how expensive remembering might be. The cost of her memories could very well be her sanity.

Each new revelation loosens Anne's grip on reality.

Surely her crazy grandmother didn't do THAT to Anne's beloved parakeet! Yes, the old woman DID! No … actually, she didn't. The horror that attacks her in the garage — it can't possibly be real … can it?

And most important: what happened to the little girl with a face like a china doll whose name was Laughs in the Wind?

The Boogie Man knows.

He also knows Anne's here. He knows it's showtime. And he knows what she doesn't — that Anne might very well have to pay for her past with her future, that the cost of remembering could be her life.

In 1987, the dirty war that will last twelve years and kill thirty thousand Peruvians finally reaches up through the Andean cloud forest for Nina and her family. Nina's father is shot by soldiers, her mother raped, and her brother lost to the shadowy ranks of Shining Path guerrillas. And when Agustín Malqui, the village pastor, files a legal complaint against the military, it's no surprise when he disappears in the middle of the night — just another casualty of the military regime.

Twenty-odd years later, Nina, now an officer in Cuzco's tourist police, comes across a familiar name on the police printer that she scans daily for any trace of her long-lost brother. Agustín Malqui is alive. After spending years in a political prison, the broken pastor has been wandering the country, saving souls and drowning his demons in pisco. Nina tracks him down, only to lose him yet again in a police sweep of political malcontents. But before Malqui disappears, he tells her a drunken tale she can scarcely believe: that her brother Miguel is still alive.

Despite warnings and threats from her chief and the pleadings of her lover, an officer in Peru's anti-terrorist branch, Nina presses on to find Malqui. Her search takes her through Peru's underworld, from remote villages high in the Andes to the steaming jungle haunts of the narcotraficantes, and ultimately to a secret political prison in the altiplano, where she learns the truth about Malqui and her own vanished brother.

So you think things are crazy in Hollywood? Just wait, they’re about to get a lot crazier. Maybe it’s because LAPD homicide cop, Kate Sexton’s best friend, Natalie, has a new boyfriend who is brilliant but deranged. Or maybe it’s because Kate is now living with roommates and a landlord who make the Adams Family seem tame by comparison. Or maybe it’s because Kate’s canine partner, Bernie, is about to pay the price for some serious mischief. Or maybe it’s because Kate’s love life is like a rollercoaster, full of wild twists and turns.

It's one minute after the Big One. Marty Slack, a TV network executive, crawls out from under his Mercedes, parked outside what once was a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, the location for a new TV show. Downtown LA is in ruins. The sky is thick with black smoke. His cell phone is dead. The freeways are rubble. The airport is demolished. Buildings lay across streets like fallen trees. It will be days before help can arrive.

Marty has been expecting this day all his life. He's prepared. In his car are a pair of sturdy walking shoes and a backpack of food, water, and supplies. He knows there is only one thing he can do … that he must do: get home to his wife Beth, go back to their gated community on the far edge of the San Fernando Valley.

All he has to do is walk. But he will quickly learn that it's not that easy. His dangerous, unpredictable journey home will take him through the different worlds of what was once Los Angeles. Wildfires rage out of control. Flood waters burst through collapsed dams. Natural gas explosions consume neighborhoods. Sinkholes swallow entire buildings. After-shocks rip apart the ground. Looters rampage through the streets.

There's no power. No running water. No order.

Marty Slack thinks he's prepared. He's wrong. Nothing can prepare him for this ordeal, a quest for his family and for his soul, a journey that will test the limits of his endurance and his humanity, a trek from the man he was to the man he can be … if he can survive the walk.
