Glasgow is being terrorised by a serial killer the media have nicknamed The Cutter. The murders have left the police baffled. There seems to be neither rhyme nor reason behind the killings; no kind of pattern or motive; an entirely different method of murder each time, and nothing that connects the victims except for the fact that the little fingers of their right hands have been severed.

If DS Rachel Narey could only work out the key to the seemingly random murders, how and why the killer selects his victims, she would be well on her way to catching him. But as the police, the press and a threatening figure from Glasgow's underworld begin to close in on The Cutter, his carefully-laid plans threaten to unravel — with horrifying consequences.

August. A long-running heatwave has been dominating the news for weeks, and a state of lethargy is affecting everyone — not least blind ex-policewoman Naomi Blake, who is experiencing a restless dissatisfaction with life in general.

Naomi — particularly vulnerable because of her lack of sight — is one of the captives. During the next few days, tensions rise as the situation grows fraught with danger, and the extreme heat intensifies …

However, under the tight control of an unpredictable and volatile persecutor, Ted Harper, the heat is the least of Naomi's worries. She knows this man. Knows who and what he was and the knowledge does nothing to reassure her …

Caught Dead Handed by Carol J. Perry

A Lee Barrett, Witch City Mystery (1st in series)

Publisher: Kensington

Caught Dead Handed by Carol J. Perry, Amazon Kindle format

What we know about the character: Lee Barrett is a reporter with WICH-TV in Salem, Massachusetts. For more information about her first murder, see a synopsis of the book, below.

She's not a psychic — she just plays one on TV.

Most folks associate the city of Salem, Massachusetts with witches, but for Lee Barrett, it's home. This October she's returned to her hometown — where her beloved Aunt Ibby still lives — to interview for a job as a reporter at WICH-TV. But the only opening is for a call-in psychic to host the late night horror movies. It seems the previous host, Ariel Constellation, never saw her own murder coming.

Lee reluctantly takes the job, but when she starts seeing real events in the obsidian ball she's using as a prop, she wonders if she might really have psychic abilities. To make things even spookier, it's starting to look like Ariel may have been an actual practicing witch — especially when O'Ryan, the cat Lee and Aunt Ibby inherited from her, exhibits some strange powers of his own. With Halloween fast approaching, Lee must focus on unmasking a killer — or her career as a psychic may be very short lived …

Location scout and Jane Austen aficionado, Kate Sharp, is thrilled when the company she works for lands the job of finding locations for a new film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, but then her boss, Kevin, fails to return from a scouting trip to England. Afraid that Kevin has slipped back into some destructive personal habits he struggles with, Kate travels to England to salvage Kevin's and the company's reputation before word gets out that he is missing.

Things go from bad to worse when Kate arrives in Nether Woodsmoor, a quaint village of golden stone cottages and rolling green hills, only to find no trace of Kevin except his abandoned luggage. Even the rumpled, easygoing local scout they consulted, Alex, doesn't know where Kevin might be.

Increasingly worried about Kevin and with an antsy director waiting for updates about the preproduction details, Kate embarks on a search that includes a pub crawl and cozy cottages as well as stately country manors. But Kevin remains missing, and she begins to suspect that the picturesque village and beautiful countryside may not be as idyllic as they seem.
