Former "It Girl" Janie Jenkins is sly, stunning, and fresh out of prison. Ten years ago, at the height of her fame, she was incarcerated for the murder of her mother, a high-society beauty known for her good works and rich husbands. Now, released on a technicality, Janie makes herself over and goes undercover, determined to chase down the one lead she has on her mother's killer. The only problem? Janie doesn't know if she's the killer she's looking for.

Janie makes her way to an isolated South Dakota town whose mysteries rival her own. Enlisting the help of some new friends (and the town's wary police chief), Janie follows a series of clues — an old photograph, an abandoned house, a forgotten diary — and begins to piece together her mother's seemingly improbable connection to the town. When new evidence from Janie's own past surfaces, she's forced to consider the possibility that she and her mother were more alike than either of them would ever have imagined.

As she digs tantalizingly deeper, and as suspicious locals begin to see through her increasingly fragile facade, Janie discovers that even the sleepiest towns hide sinister secrets — and will stop at nothing to guard them. On the run from the press, the police, and maybe even a murderer, Janie must choose between the anonymity she craves and the truth she so desperately needs.

Everything about the man is a mystery: the massive ranch in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming that nobody ever visits, the women who live with him, the secret philanthropies, the private airstrip, the sudden disappearances. And especially the persistent rumors that the man's wealth comes from killing people.

Joe Pickett, still officially a game warden but now mostly a troubleshooter for the governor, is assigned to find out what the truth is, but he discovers a lot more than he'd bargained for. There are two other men living up at that ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe. The other is new — but Joe knows him all too well. The first man doesn't frighten Joe. The second is another story entirely.

It's October 1945 in the SF Bay Area. World War II is over. American boys who fought in the Pacific theater are coming home. Doctor James T. Palmer, an esteemed physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, the government project that developed the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima Japan two months earlier, mysteriously disappears. Did his work on the Manhattan Project have anything to do with his disappearance? Did he sell his research to the highest bidder? The beginning of the Cold War between the United States and Russia has started. Russia needs atomic weapons.

It's up to his son, JT and one very smart chocolate Labrador retriever named Mickey, to find out what happened. JT has issues of his own, having just returned stateside from a VA hospital. During the war he served as Military Police aboard the ill-fated USS Indianapolis, which was sunk in the Pacific by a Japanese submarine near the end of the war. Stranded in the Pacific Ocean the survivors of the Indianapolis suffered through the worst shark attacks (for five days) in recorded history. Recovered from a life-threatening injury, but still suffering from the trauma of his ordeal, JT, with Mickey's help, struggles to uncover what happened to his father.

Los Angeles, 1943. Reporter Nathan Doyle had his reasons to want Phil Arlen dead, but when he sees the man's body pulled from the La Brea tar pit, he knows he'll be the prime suspect. He also knows that his life won't stand up to intense police scrutiny, so he sets out to crack the case himself.

Lieutenant Matthew Spain's official inquiries soon lead him to believe that Nathan knows more than he's saying. But that's not the only reason Matt takes notice of the handsome journalist. Matt's been drawn to men before, but he must hide his true feelings — or risk his entire career.

As Nathan digs deeper, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay one step ahead of Matt Spain — and to deny his intense attraction to him. Nathan's secrets may not include murder, but has his hunt put him right in the path of the real killer?
