Four men take a New York City subway train hostage — along with all of its passengers. Their demands are simple: deliver $1 million, or the men will start killing hostages. Fast-paced and intensely psychological, this novel tells the story from the point of view of each of the hijackers — revealing each man's motivations, desperations, and fatal flaws.

Tensions build as the four hijackers begin to fight among themselves — and the passengers take advantage of their weakness. Despite their meticulous planning, the kidnapping attempt starts to go awry — and the hijackers' escape seems impossible.

Fat Cat At Large by Janet Cantrell

A Chase Oliver, Fat Cat Mystery (1st in series)

Publisher: Berkley

Fat Cat At Large by Janet Cantrell, Amazon Kindle format

What we know about the character: Charity "Chase" Oliver owns Bar None, a Minneapolis treatery. Quincy is her plus-size cat. For more information about her first murder, see a synopsis of the book, below.

When she's not dreaming up irresistible dessert bars for her Minneapolis treatery, Bar None, Charity "Chase" Oliver is running after her cat, Quincy — a tubby tabby with a gift for sniffing out edibles. But what happens when this cat burglar leads Chase to the scene of a real crime?

The jig is up for Chase's adorable plus-size cat, Quincy. His new vet says "diet" — that means no more cherry cheesecake bars. From now on he gets low-calorie kibble only. But one taste of the stuff is all it takes to drive him in search of better things. Quincy's escape is the last thing Chase needs after the nasty run-in she has with underhanded business rival Gabe Naughtly.

Chase tracks Quincy down in a neighbor's kitchen, where he's devouring a meatloaf, unaware of the much more serious crime he's stumbled upon. Gabe's corpse is lying on the kitchen floor, and when Chase is discovered at the murder scene, she becomes suspect number one. Now, with a little help from her friends — both human and feline — she'll have to catch the real killer or wind up behind bars that aren't so sweet.

As the investigation takes Bosch deeper into the past, a beautiful rookie cop brings him alive in the present. No official warning can break them apart — or prepare Bosch for the explosions when the case takes a few hard turns.

More about our featured title, below …

Psychologist and Pittsburgh Police Department consultant Daniel Rinaldi has a new patient. Lisa Harland, a local girl, once made a splash in Playboy and the dubious side of Hollywood before bottoming out. Back home, down and out again, she married one of the city's richest and most ruthless tycoons. Lisa's challenge to Danny is that she intends to commit suicide by 7:00 PM. His therapist skills may buy some time — but, exiting, she's kidnapped right outside his office.

Summoned to the Harland estate, Danny is forced, through a bizarre sequence of events, to be the bag man on the ransom delivery. This draws him into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with a brilliant, lethal adversary. Complicating things is the unhappy Harland family, whose members have dark secrets of their own along with suspect loyalties, as well as one of Danny's other patients, a volatile vet whose life may, like Lisa's, be at risk. What is really at stake here?
