When the body of a young girl is found dumped on the banks of the Thames, even the police are shocked by the brutality of her murder: horrifically mutilated, severed in half, and drained of blood, her corpse is an obvious mirror image of the famous Black Dahlia murder in 1940s Los Angeles.

Now Detective Inspector Anna Travis must race against time to catch this copycat killer. She turns to her mentor, the brilliant and volatile Detective Chief Inspector James Langton, but the frictions of their romantic relationship are complicating the case. And then a second girl is found …

For more information about the book, see a synopsis, below.

Just in case your memory's as short as a South Carolina snowstorm, I'm Abbey Force, and my best friend, Bee, and I spent the last few months solving this crazy mystery involving robbery, betrayal, and a lost chest of Spanish gold. We also managed to clear my dad of the crimes everyone thought he committed (even though he still hadn't woken up from his coma). Not too shabby for a summer vacation.

Now school's about to begin again, but that isn't even close to the most distressing thing happening around here. First, my dad woke up, which is great, but he somehow got it into his head that he needs to start taking cases again. Then me and Bee saw something simply awful: our neighbor's dog, Yemassee, getting kidnapped by a couple of rough-looking fellas with guns. And as if that weren't enough, we just found out that someone Daddy sued years ago is back in town, making shady business deals again.

I don't know what all of this means, not yet. But I do know that if you try to mess with my dad, my friends, or my friends' dogs, you've got trouble on your hands. Trouble that goes by the name of Force.

This ingenious twist on a classic noir tale tells the story of Lora King, a schoolteacher, and her brother Bill, a junior investigator with the district attorney's office …

Lora's comfortable, suburban life is jarringly disrupted when Bill falls in love with a mysterious young woman named Alice Steele, a Hollywood wardrobe assistant with a murky past.

Made sisters by marriage but not by choice, the bond between Lora and Alice is marred by envy and mistrust. Spurred on by inconsistencies in Alice's personal history and possibly jealous of Alice's hold on her brother, Lora finds herself lured into the dark alleys and mean streets of seamy Los Angeles. Assuming the role of amateur detective, she uncovers a shadowy world of drugs, prostitution, and ultimately, murder.

Lora's fascination with Alice's "sins" increases in direct proportion to the escalation of her own relationship with Mike Standish, a charmingly amoral press agent who appears to know more about his old friend Alice than he reveals. The deeper Lora digs to uncover Alice's secrets, the more her own life begins to resemble Alice's sinister past — and present.

More about our featured title, below …

Ellie opens the door to a man who is a stranger but instantly recognisable as the father of her housekeeper's brilliant but difficult young son. Mikey had been conceived at a party during which his mother Vera, a schoolgirl, had been drugged and raped. Abdi hadn't wanted anything further to do with her — then. Twelve years later he is a high-flying consultant whose wife cannot have children, and he aims to pay off Vera and adopt Mikey: a suggestion that does not go down well.

Ellie discovers that Vera still thinks fondly of her then boyfriend, even though he had also rejected her after that fatal night. But was that because he had fallen out of love with her, or because his father had been murdered that same weekend? Could the two events have been connected? And what part had Vera's closest friends and her family played in the tragedy?

Uncovering betrayals between friends and discovering the greed and jealousies behind past events only makes it more difficult for Vera and Mikey to decide on their future …
