Please Welcome Back Crime Novelist G. R. Case

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by G. R. Case
with G. R. Case

We are delighted to welcome back crime novelist G. R. Case to Omnimystery News.

Earlier this month we featured an excerpt from G. R.'s debut thriller 30 Days (Cool Blue Books; April 2014 trade paperback and ebook formats), and last week we had the opportunity to talk with him a little more about it.

Today G. R. tells us what storytelling means to him.

I know I will never win a Grammy Award for a heart-felt song, nor will I ever become world-renown for painting a masterpiece on canvas. I have a different type of gift that allows me to see, hear, and feel the struggles and triumphs of characters in various situations.

The art of storytelling is as old as humanity itself, whereby, it has been conducted orally to disseminate a vital cultural heritage from one generation to the next, or it is expressed through the written word. It is a privilege and honor to be able to share with readers a story that has been crafted from a vision, outline, rough draft, and finished book. Like readers, I get a chance to see characters go through a "roller-coaster" ride on the emotional spectrum. Sometimes I just want to say to the characters, "Don't do it!" However, as a novelist, I have to remain true to my craft and don't intervene with a character's journey. After all, I am only a scribe documenting a character's action as it unfolds.

I am fine with not winning a Grammy Award or not being a painter, but after years of writing many novels, maybe one day I'll carve out my place in history.

Vengeance is due …

Marcus Freling is a military veteran working as a mail carrier enjoying life. His pride and joy is his thirteen-year-old niece. Innocence is lost when her young life is snuffed out by a senseless random drive-by shooting in Harlem, NY. Over the next several months, Marcus's sorrow turns to anger. Troy is questioned by Detective Rodgers about the murder but is released due to lack of evidence.

Marcus lurks in the shadows of Troy's existence, fiendishly watching his every move over the next year. He kidnaps Troy and holds him hostage in a secluded farmhouse in the Catskill Mountains. He heaps unrelenting torture upon Troy over the next thirty days. He insanely serves as the defense attorney, prosecutor, and judge at Troy's mock trial in a barn behind the house. Rodgers uncovers Marcus's plot and ventures into the mountains to stop him. Will he get there before it is too late?

Within the inner circle of haute cuisine, a detective witnesses a delectable murder …

They call him the gourmet detective; the only thing sharper than his mind is his palate. When chefs need a rare ingredient, an ancient wine, or simply a new idea to gain that extra Michelin-star boost, they come to the detective's cozy London office and plead for his help. For top-notch cooking, he is always happy to lend his taste buds to the cause.

Now Raymond Lefebvre, executive chef at one of London's finest French restaurants, has asked for the detective's help with a bit of kitchen espionage. Lefebvre's crosstown rival is winning international accolades cooking a dish called Oiseau Royal, and Lefebvre wants the recipe. Getting it takes the detective deep into the Circle of Careme, where the most elite chefs in Britain gather to swap recipes, techniques, and gossip. But when the chefs of Careme start to die, the detective starts to salivate. There is no finer appetizer than murder.

That dirty job done, a lovely evening turns even more delightful when she's picked up by the cops and spends the next two hours at the Hall of Justice. Could this day get any worse? Of course! Guess who arrives home to find a dead hooker on her living room floor?

Handsome Parker Phillips, Rebecca's new beau and the most attractive man she's met in ages, is arrested for the murder. (Worse, she suspects he might actually have done it.)

Everybody loved easygoing Ham Brocato, producer of the successful New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; even so, he ends up stabbed to death in his kitchen on the eve of the fest. Spunky New Orleans Homicide Detective Skip Langdon acquires a ready-made suspect list from the victim's live-in lover, feisty and swiftly rising star Ti-Belle Thiebaud, and sets out to solve the murder. To complicate the case, the victim's sixteen-year-old aspiring blues musician sister has disappeared, and Skip suspects that if the young woman isn't herself the murderer, she's in mortal danger from the person who is.

Skip doesn't miss much as she probes the victim's tangled relationships, including Ariel Bruge, Ham's assistant, apparently a woman scorned; his father George, enmeshed with family members in a bitter disagreement over the family's lucrative Po' Boy chain; and Patty, the distraught stepmother.

With her long-distance love, Steve Steinman, and her quirky landlord, Jimmy Dee, to assist her, Skip trails an elusive killer through a sweltering early summer in the steamy Big Easy, a lively blend of both big city and gossipy small town, in a tale of southern kinships gone awry.
