In Hitchcockian fashion, the telephone rings at two in the morning. PI Dev Haskell answers, half-asleep, to a giggling woman named Danielle. It seems she's found his phone number on a bathroom stall. She's called Dev "for a good time", but what she really wants is for him to deliver a simple message to her former business partner.

It's all fun and games (not to mention funny) til someone goes missing. Next thing he knows, our fair but bumbling hero can't find his client or her business partner, which turns out to be the least of his problems when he finds himself on the hook for murder, and suddenly haunted by a multitude of childhood secrets.

Detective Inspector Mackie Divine has been hardened by decades in the Metropolitan Police Force. After years of loyal service, she faces suspension and is approached by an agent of the Special Intelligence Services for a surveillance operation.

The case takes her to an isolated château in Brittany, France. She will be a guest of The Retreat, a community of social misfits, led by Peter Roman, a charismatic philosopher and therapist. Her task is to gain the trust of Roman and his group, and to investigate Babel — a group of extreme right-wing influential figures hell bent on organising terrorist attacks and causing civil unrest — who regularly gather at The Retreat.

Mackie fails to take their presence seriously … until a series of arson and racially provoked attacks take place in the neighbouring town. Soon riots begin across Europe: Berlin, Milan and Marseilles are in flames. With tensions escalating and time running out, Mackie is ordered to keep her head down and eyes up. She must not underestimate the danger of the Babel group.

Can she get to the heart of the matter and save her career? Or will she become a victim of the dangerous group controlling The Retreat?

Christian Roberts, a handsome, young Floridian, has retired from horse racing and sets off with his wife, Allie, to cruise the Caribbean on his new sloop. Tragedy strikes, ending the dream vacation, and Christian becomes the prime suspect in a murder.

Shattered and guilt ridden, Christian believes his actions caused the death, and suicide lurks in his thoughts, a way to end his pain, but he can't act on the impulse, at least not yet. He must honor a dying request, Save the sharks. Do it for me.

Every year, one-hundred million sharks are killed for their fins that are used in a Chinese soup, a symbol of wealth in Asia. Within the next ten years, one-third of all shark species will be extinct, and without these ocean predators, the reefs will decline.

Christian embraces the impossible task of stopping the shark slaughter. Under the alias of Captain Nemo, he becomes an eco-terrorist while a suspicious FBI agent dogs his every move. Will Christian be caught and imprisoned? Will the fin traders kill him? Could despair win out, causing him to take his own life? Or will Christian succeed and save the sharks?

It's Prohibition. It's Philadelphia. And Jersey Leo doesn't fit in.

Jersey is an albino of mixed race. Known as "Snowball" on the street, he tends bar at a speakeasy the locals call the Ink Well. There, he's considered a hero for having saved the life of a young boy. But when his old grade school buddy, Aaron Garvey, calls from death row and asks for one last favor, all hell breaks loose.

Jersey finds himself running from a band of crooked cops, hiding an escaped convict in the Ink Well, and reuniting with his grammar school crush — the now sultry Myra Banks, who has shed a club foot and become a speakeasy siren. Through it all, Jersey tries to safeguard the Ink Well with no help other than his ragtag group of friends: his ex-boxing-champion father, Ernie Leo; the street-savvy Johalis; a dim-witted dockworker named Homer; and the dubious palm reader Madame Curio. With them, Jersey digs for the truth about his friend Aaron Garvey — and winds up discovering a few things about himself.
