Review: Supreme Justice by Max Allan Collins

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Supreme Justice by Max Allan Collins. A Joe Reeder Thriller.

Review summary: This presumed first in a series is completely forgettable both from a whodunit perspective and its radically political point of view. But the central character is actually quite interesting and the scenes in which he is using his skills are riveting. More of him and his abilities and less of his politics would be welcome. A Joe Reeder Thriller
Thomas & Mercer (July 2014)

Publisher synopsis: After taking a bullet for his commander-in-chief, Secret Service agent Joseph Reeder is a hero. But his outspoken criticism of the president he saved — who had stacked the Supreme Court with hard-right justices to overturn Roe v. Wade, amp up the Patriot Act, and shred the First Amendment — put Reeder at odds with the Service's apolitical nature, making him an outcast.

FBI agent Patti Rogers finds herself paired with the unpopular former agent on a task force investigating the killing of Supreme Court Justice Henry Venter. Reeder — nicknamed "Peep" for his unparalleled skills at reading body language — makes a startling discovery while reviewing a security tape: the shooting was premeditated, not a botched robbery. Even more chilling, the controversial Venter may not be the only justice targeted for death.

Is a mastermind mounting an unprecedented judicial coup aimed at replacing ultra-conservative justices with a new liberal majority? To crack the conspiracy and save the lives of not just the justices but also Reeder's own family, rising star Rogers and legendary investigator Reeder must push their skills — and themselves — to the limit.

New This Week: Tom Swift and his Motor Cycle, The Adventures of Tom Swift by Victor Appleton and Thomas Hudson

Tom Swift and his Motor Cycle by Victor Appleton and Thomas Hudson

Like many contemporary mystery fans, we read The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew growing up but also the adventures of Tom Swift, which often combined fantastic engineering marvels in a sometimes criminal or mystery storyline.

This is the first volume in the 100th anniversary rewrite project of this series. It has been substantially rewritten to remove outright racism and to enhance the mechanical and technical interests. Many books of this era used sentence structures, certain words and even punctuation in ways that can be confusing to younger readers today. So, every effort has been made to alleviate this issue while retaining the flavor of a story first told more than a century before.

Young mechanical genius Tom Swift purchases a motorcycle from a man who finds he can not control it. Using his knowhow and a lot of elbow grease, Tom manages to not just get the motor cycle into prime condition, he makes some enhancements to its electrical system, and constructs the first hard-shelled helmet to protect his head.

While perfecting his machine he runs afoul of a gang of thieves who are wanted for a robbery in another town. A mysterious old hobo makes Tom's life miserable as he tries to help apprehend the gang members.

But, is the hobo a friend or a foe?

A man dies on the operating table, and Inspector Cockrill suspects murder …

As German V-1 rockets rain down on the English countryside, the men and women of the military hospitals fight to stay calm. The morning after a raid, Doctor Barnes prepares for a routine surgery to repair a postman's broken leg. But with general anesthesia, there is always danger. Before the first incision is made, the postman turns purple. Barnes and his nurses do what they can, but the patient is dead in minutes.

The coroner calls for an inquest. Barnes has a history of lost patients, and cannot afford more trouble. Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Cockrill is unimpressed by the staff at the hospital, which he finds a nest of jealousy, indiscretion, and bitterness. One of them, doctor or nurse, murdered the postman — and it won't be long before they kill again.

One hundred years of bad blood between the Alaskan villages of Kushtaka and Kuskulana come to a boil when the body of a young Kushtaka ne'er-do-well is found wedged in a fish wheel. Sergeant Jim Chopin's prime suspect is a Kuskulana man who is already in trouble in both villages for falling in love across the river. But when the suspect disappears, members of both tribes refuse to speak to Jim.

When a second murder that looks suspiciously like payback occurs, Jim has no choice but to call in Kate Shugak for help. This time, though, her Park relationships may not be enough to sort out the truth hidden in the tales of tragedy and revenge.
