Well Read, Then Dead by Terrie Farley Moran, a New 1st in Series Mystery Introducing Mary "Sassy" Cabot and Bridget Mayfield

Well Read, Then Dead by Terrie Farley Moran

Omnimystery News is pleased to present you with one of this month's new 1st in Series titles, a mystery, thriller or suspense novel that introduces a recurring character (or characters) …

Well Read, Then Dead by Terrie Farley Moran

Mary Cabot and Bridget Mayfield, Read 'Em and Eat (1st in series)

Publisher: Berkley

Well Read, Then Dead by Terrie Farley Moran, Amazon Kindle format

What we know about the characters: Nestled in the barrier islands of Florida's Gulf Coast, Fort Myers Beach is home to Mary "Sassy" Cabot and Bridget Mayfield — owners of the bookstore cafĂ©, Read 'Em and Eat. But when they're not dishing about books or serving up scones, Sassy and Bridgy are keeping tabs on hard-boiled murder. For more information about their first murder, see a synopsis of the book, below.

Read 'Em and Eat is known for its delicious breakfast and lunch treats, along with quite a colorful clientele. If it's not Rowena Gustavson loudly debating the merits of the current book club selection, it's Miss Augusta Maddox lecturing tourists on rumors of sunken treasure among the islands. It's no wonder Sassy's favorite is Delia Batson, a regular at the Emily Dickinson table. Augusta's cousin and best friend Delia is painfully shy — which makes the news of her murder all the more shocking.

No one is more distraught than Augusta, and Sassy wants to help any way she can. But Augusta doesn't have time for sympathy. She wants Delia's killer found — and she's not taking no for an answer. Now Sassy is on the case, and she'd better act fast before there's any more trouble in paradise.

A mountaintop mansion. A motley collection of guests. A murder. This weekend has all the makings of a classic, cozy mystery story. And a story is all it's supposed to be — acted out by noted authors and eager fans at the atmospheric Mohonk Mountain House resort in upstate New York.

Along with a gaggle of his peers, Mallory's been invited to join the fun by donning a costume and an alter-ego to pose as a "suspect". But before you can say "nobody leaves this room!", Mallory is once again thrust into the role of driven detective when the game's designated "corpse" turns up decidedly dead.

There's no doubt that the victim, notorious mystery-novel critic Kirk Rath, incited the murderous wrath of nearly every writer he reviewed. But even the most scathing critical barbs never drove a writer to put down the pen in favor of the sword. And even Mallory is baffled by the curious circumstances surrounding the mystery within a mystery. Did he actually witness Rath being run through by a masked figure in the snowy darkness? Was Rath really spotted alive and sneering after the bloody fact? Is someone playing mind games? And is everyone in the house fair game.

Murder will out, as they say. But can even the masterful Mallory outwit a roguish gallery of the finest plotters in print?

Chet and Bernie pay a visit to Bernie's girlfriend, Suzie Sanchez, a crack reporter living in far-off Washington, DC. She's working on a big story she can't talk about, but when her source, a mysterious Brit with possible intelligence connections, runs into trouble of the worst kind, Bernie suddenly finds himself under arrest.

Meanwhile Chet gets to know a powerful DC operative who may or may not have the goods on an ambitious politician. Soon Chet and Bernie are sucked into an international conspiracy, battling unfamiliar forces under the blinking red eyes of a strange bird that Chet notices from the get-go but seems to have slipped by everybody else. Most menacing of all is Barnum, a guinea pig with the fate of the nation in his tiny paws.

As Harry Truman famously quipped, "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." Too bad he didn't get to meet Chet!

Lee Ofsted is a "rabbit" golfer in the Pacific-Western Women's Pro-Am. She made it into the tournament by the skin of her teeth and suddenly she can't keep her long drives from slicing — veering sharply to the right. She is hitting the ball perfectly and it simply isn't going where it is supposed to. And if Lee can't get rid of this slice quickly, all the scraping and saving to enter the tournament and stay in it, all the Big Macs and cheap motels, will be for nothing.

Then Lee discovers the body of the tour's star at the bottom of the course lake, and her own problems with golf techniques pale in comparison. Enter Lieutenant Graham Sheldon. He's charming, handsome, and determined to capture the killer — as well as Lee's heart. But the murder has triggered buried anger and petty jealousies among the players. Lee finds out just what wicked means are causing her drives to slice. And it looks like the murderer has barely begun to score …
