Amy Maxwell's 6th Sense by Heather Balog, Amazon Kindle format

Amy Maxwell just knew something would go wrong if the whole family went on vacation — she had a sixth sense about it. A week of fun in the sun at an all-inclusive resort on the beach should be a much deserved relaxing time for the whole family, right? Not for Amy. As any mother can attest to, prepping for vacation is akin to Chinese Water Torture. There's a dead fish in her toddler's suitcase, her teen doesn't want to go somewhere without Internet access, and her preteen has completely outgrown her bathing suit. She's wishing for a vacation from her vacation before the wheels of the plane even touch down on the runway.

Amy finds herself dreaming of a solo vacation after things don't get much better when they arrive at their destination. The hotel room doesn't look like the one in the brochure, the kids are more interested in the WiFi password than the gorgeous sandy beaches, and there are some shady characters staying in the hotel. What's more, Roger is acting suspicious. Amy finds out that he's been meeting up with a perky young blonde who just happens to be a former student. On top of that, she discovers her old pal, DEA agent Jason, just happens to be at the same hotel, sending her overactive imagination into overdrive. Something doesn't add up for Amy. Unable to stop herself from snooping, our favorite scatterbrained, busybody mom of four finds herself stumbling upon another mystery. And this one proves to be a little too close to home … even in the Caribbean.

Temporary Sanity by Rose Connors, Amazon Kindle format

When can a citizen become a killer? Is homicidal insanity ever a moral or legal justification for murder? And what should a jury do when the facts are clear but they don't tell the real story?

Cape Cod attorney Marty Nickerson, until recently a Massachusetts prosecutor, must ask herself those questions in her new role as defense attorney for client Buck Hammond.

The charge is murder one. When Buck's seven-year-old son was raped and killed by pedophile Hector Monteros, Buck took justice into his own hands. Unfortunately, the TV cameras were rolling as Buck aimed his hunting rifle at Monteros's head.

The only viable defense is insanity, but the grieving father refuses to say he was crazy when he pulled the trigger. Marty, teaming with Harry Madigan, her partner in love and law, has a tough case. How can the jury acquit Buck when the shooting is right there on the screen for all to see?

Marty and Harry and their young assistant, Kevin Kydd, are already stretched thin when, on the very eve of the trial, a battered and bleeding woman staggers into their office. She's in deep trouble — her attacker's body has just been found, viciously stabbed, and he's an officer of the court. Now Marty has two seemingly impossible battles to win against her former colleagues.

But losing a verdict may be the least of Marty's worries, as her efforts soon lead to shocking revelations that bring fear to the Cape and devastating changes to Buck's trial. Well, who said being a defense attorney was going to be easy?

Two large, and very rare, Amur tigers have vanished from their cage, and authorities are worried sick that they've been stolen for their body parts. Traditional Chinese medicine prizes those parts for home remedies, and people will do extreme things to get what they need. Some of them are a great deal more extreme than others — as Virgil is about to find out.

Then there's the homefront. Virgil's relationship with his girlfriend Frankie has been getting kind of serious, but when Frankie's sister Sparkle moves in for the summer, the situation gets a lot more complicated. For one thing, her research into migrant workers is about to bring her up against some very violent people who emphatically do not want to be researched. For another … she thinks Virgil's kind of cute.

"You mess around with Sparkle," Frankie told Virgil, "you could get yourself stabbed."
"She carries a knife?"
"No, but I do."

Forget a storm — this one's a tornado.

Her investigation becomes complicated when she begins receiving a flurry of bizarre poems from an anonymous cyberbully who calls himself Tailend Charlie. When the tenth poem arrives exactly twenty-four hours after Elisa's death, Scarpetta begins to suspect the harasser is involved, and sounds the alarm to her investigative partner Pete Marino and her husband, FBI analyst Benton Wesley.

She also enlists the help of her niece, Lucy. But to Scarpetta's surprise, tracking the slippery Tailend Charlie is nearly impossible, even for someone as brilliant as her niece. Thanks to Tess's eyewitness testimony, a man named Lazarus Abbott was arrested and convicted for the heinous crime. But twenty years later, a test reveals that Abbott's DNA does not match that of Phoebe's murderer. Driven by her fear that she may have sent an innocent man to his death, Tess and her adopted son, Erny, return to the New Hampshire town in which it all happened years ago.

Stone Hill, New Hampshire, is still an idyllic New England town. Tess's courageous mother, Dawn, who suffered the violent loss of her daughter and the early death of her heartbroken husband, now runs the charming Stone Hill Inn. Tess's older brother, Jake, lives nearby with his wife, a local girl he fell in love with during the trial of his sister's killer. While Tess's family stands by her account of the crime, nerves are frayed throughout Stone Hill, and others in town accuse her of lying and view her as a murderer.

Out of the Ashes by Lawrence Kelter, Amazon Kindle format

Two brave cops, Chalice and Mather attempt to return to active duty after their lives have been turned upside down. Their boss tosses the newly paired team a slow-roller giving them time to warm up to one another, a case that quickly and unexpectedly morphs into something much bigger. All of the assumptions they made at the onset are quickly proven false.

What starts out as a homicide quickly blossoms into an international manhunt as the two FBI agents are dispatched to Mexico to bring back their man. There's far more at stake than meets the eye and what they don't know will most certainly cost them their lives unless they can rise to the occasion and once again perform at the top of their game.
