Review: The Devil's Cold Dish by Eleanor Kuhns

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The Devil's Cold Dish by Eleanor Kuhns. A Will Rees Mystery.

Review summary: Though the murder mystery plot is well-executed it suffers primarily from an otherwise intelligent, rational series lead turned into an emotional, irrational bumbling fool. Some of the hallmarks of what has made this outstanding series so enjoyable to date are present here but this latest entry simply doesn't measure up. (Click here for text of full review.)

Between the evil and the deep blue sea …

A historic cruise ship, a haunted ship, the Celtic American Line's Destiny, sets sail from the Port of New Orleans — with a killer on board. He's known as the Archangel Killer because of the way he displays his victims in churches. And how he places a different saint's medallion on each body. No one knows exactly who he is or why he's doing this.

Jackson Crow — head of the FBI's Krewe of Hunters, a special unit of paranormal investigators — is assigned to the case, along with local agent Jude McCoy. Then Alexi Cromwell, who works in the ship's piano bar, is drawn into the situation when a victim's ghost appears to her — and to Jude. She and Jude share an attraction, and not just because of their mutual talent.

There are many suspects, but one by one they're ruled out … Or are they? In the end, Jude and Alexi have to rely on each other to catch the killer and escape his evil plans for Alexi.

It's the kind of case no one but Jaywalker would take. A young black man from the worst section of the Bronx is accused of raping five women. Five white women. The first four victims have positively identified him, and the fifth is on the verge of doing the same. It's open and shut. But not for Jaywalker.

In his effort to make sure justice is done, even — no, especially — for someone who's never really had a shot, he starts looking deeply into character: the defendant's, the victims' — and society's. What he learns will not only change one man's life, it will haunt Jaywalker forever.

Pete Sawyer is a private eye of a different kind. The son of a World War II American pilot and a brave French resistance fighter, he grew up on both sides of the Atlantic — though he prefers his sun-dappled villa on the Riviera to most other places. He takes pleasure in a fine wine … and a good gun. His French name is Pierre-Ange, and it suits him. In English, it means Stone Angel.

Minding his own business at a favorite Nice creperie, Pete notices a teenage girl hurrying by — with a desperate look on her face. Moments later, two cops arrive, a young actor named Bruno Ravic bursts from a nearby doorway, shots are fired, and Pete's most dangerous case to date begins! The girl is Odile Garnier, and her father (former Grand Prix champ Egon Mulhausser) hires Pete to find her. But what is the connection between Odile and Bruno, who is murdered just a few days later? And why do so many clues seem to lead to the Cannes Film Festival … and to a certain director? Pete Sawyer must go underground — literally — to save lives and solve this sensational mystery!
