Review: Dark Horse by Rory Flynn

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Dark Horse by Rory Flynn. An Eddie Harkness Mystery.

Review summary: This is an intriguing and suspenseful mystery. Hurricanes approaching a city may seem like an overused plot device, but it really works here as a backdrop to the story. So, too, does the lead character's frustration in trying to do his job, only to be kept from protecting the very people he serves. Overall, a solid, strong entry in this promising series. Driving on an icy road on a truly dark and stormy night, Liss swerves her car when something darts out in front of it. She braves the weather and discovers a Scottish terrier shivering in the snow. Relieved that the dog survived their run-in, Liss sets out in search of her owner, unaware that the Scottie is actually a tiny celebrity — or that she was dognapped.

Liss soon sniffs out the pup's owner, a well-heeled woman named Deidre Amendole, who is ecstatic to be reunited with her furry friend. Deidre and her Dancing Doggies recently won Variety Live, and the trio is slated to appear in the reality show's "champion of champions" competition. But for Deidre, the contest is over before it's begun when she turns up dead …

Deidre's daughter asks Liss to help find out what happened to her mother — and to take Deidre's place on the upcoming show. Before Liss can tell her she's barking up the wrong tree, she finds herself ensnarled in the strange world of reality competitions and hot on the trail of a deadly dognapper. And just as she starts pawing at the truth, Liss realizes she could be next on the murderer's list …

I'd been gone for a year, incarcerated in a Hidden prison. The verdict was guilty, punishment death.

Invoking the Law, I've got my freedom until my sentence is carried out. Three days then I'm history. Gone, not even a memory. Wiped from the collective consciousness of those that knew, even loved me.

Magic drives me on as I try to right so many wrongs committed in the name of justice.

The vamps are mad, everyone's acting weird, I've got to clear my name, and nobody seems to believe I don't know what to do. Panic makes me act irrationally as the hours slip away and I become increasingly frantic.

If it wasn't for Kate, and the need to help my nearest and dearest, I'd have let the Council put me out of my misery. But I'm alive, and I uncover information that ensures I'll do whatever it takes to remain that way. I just have to avoid getting crushed, bitten, beaten, eaten, or zapped with the dark arts.

I should have stayed in prison. At least in there nobody tried to stomp me.

Eve lies, steals, cheats, swindles, and is even willing to take a life, paying little heed to the cost of her actions on those who love her and depend on her.

Ping-Pong Heart by Martin Limon, Amazon Kindle format

South Korea, 1974. US Army CID Sergeants George Sueño and Ernie Bascom are assigned an underwhelming case of petty theft: Major Frederick M. Schulz has accused Miss Jo Kyong-ja, an Itaewon bar girl, of stealing twenty-five thousand won from him — a sum equaling less than fifty US dollars. After two very divergent accounts of what happened, Miss Jo is attacked, and Schulz is found hacked to death only days later. Did tensions simply escalate to the point of murder?

Looking into other motives for Schulz's death, George and Ernie discover that the major was investigating the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion: the Army's counterintelligence arm, solely dedicated to tracking North Korean spies. The division is rife with suspects, but it's dangerous to speak out against them in a period of Cold War finger-pointing. As George and Ernie go head-to-head with the battalion's powerful, intimidating commander, Lance Blood, they learn that messing with the 501st can have very personal consequences.

Detective Montalbano: Episodes 25-26 on DVD

Murder, betrayal, office politics, temptation … it's all in a day's work for Detective Salvo Montalbano (Luca Zingaretti). With intuition and a cadre of police officers, Montalbano solves crimes in the fictional small city of Vigata. This work brings him across the paths of unforgettable characters who could only come from Sicily. He also wages a personal war with his own demons, which fight against his professional ideals and personal commitment to beautiful long-distance girlfriend, Livia. Yet theres always time to indulge a long-standing flirtation with his ultimate temptress, Italian cuisine. The series is filmed in the ancient, sun-washed Sicilian city of Ragusa, and is based on the mystery novels by Andrea Camilleri. In Italian with English subtitles.

"A Delicate Matter": On his way to a vacation, Montalbano ends up working on two very different cases. One concerns the murder of a well-loved 70-year-old woman who worked as a prostitute, and the other is an accusation of molestation at a school. The latter case he handles with discretion, and he also manages to finally identify the womans assassin.

"The Mud Pyramid": In his investigation of the murder of an accountant and the attempted murder of a bricklayer, Montalbano discovers a ring of corruption between construction companies and the Mafia. With acumen and courage he penetrates the impregnable mud pyramid and attempts to bring down the elaborate organization once and for all.

Brenda Blethyn stars as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in this mystery series inspired by the novels of Ann Cleeves. Amidst the sweeping landscapes of rural Northumberland, Vera and her assistant, Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty), confront brutal crimes that challenge even Vera’s genius for solving cases.

This season Vera and Aiden investigate the deaths of a woman found on the moors, a young man who worked at a traveling fairground, a fisherman pulled from the sea, and a mysterious double murder.

Young Montalbano: Episodes 4-6

Young Montalbano

Episodes 7-9

Young Montalbano: Episodes 4-6 on DVD

Before Detective Salvo Montalbano became the seasoned and mature chief detective we already know, he was just Salvo (played by Michele Riondino), new to Vigata and new to being a police chief. He didnt always live in that glorious house by the sea, or have Deputy Chief Mimi Augello as a best friend, or Fazio as a loyal assistant. He didnt always go out with the beautiful Genoese architect, Livia Burlando. Perhaps the only constants have been his unbridled quest for good food and the inability of his overly enthusiastic deputy, Catarella, to pronounce anyones name correctly.

In this prequel series to Detective Montalbano, watch the genesis of the friendships, the rivalries and the romance as the players arrive to take their places in the beautiful Sicilian town of Vigata. In Italian with English subtitles.

"The Man Who Followed Funerals": A man respected by all, who for years has shown up as a mourner at the funerals of strangers, is found brutally murdered in the street. His death seems inexplicable, until the disappearance of a woman linked to his former employer gives Montalbano his first lead. Meanwhile, Livia has come to visit, but her behavior is erratic and Salvo starts to suspect that something may be wrong.

"Room Number Two": A fire at a local hotel results in a man's death and is suspected to have been arson. Shortly after the fire, an anonymous letter arrives at headquarters, warning of the impending murder of a married woman at the hands of her jealous husband. A hunch leads Montalbano to search for a link between the seemingly disparate events.

"Death on the High Seas": Montalbano investigates the seemingly accidental killing of a fisherman aboard a Vigata fishing boat and uncovers far-reaching criminal activity. During the investigation, Fazio seems distracted and Montalbano soon discovers that the young policeman has become involved in protecting a local family from death threats during his spare time.

Young Montalbano: Episodes 4-6

Young Montalbano

Episodes 10-12

Young Montalbano: Episodes 4-6 on DVD

"The Settlement": It's hardly been a month since Livia and Salvo decided to spend some time apart, and Salvo feels bereft and melancholy. Meanwhile, he applies himself to the case of a retired, well-respected doctor who was found murdered in his own home. The resulting investigation highlights Montalbano's personal dilemmas about the complexities of love.

"The Honest Thief": Salvo requests a transfer to Genoa so that he can be closer to Livia, but it's clear that leaving his beloved Sicily is more challenging than he realized. While his move is under way, Montalbano tries to locate a missing woman at the same time he investigates a series of unusual burglaries, in which the victims report the theft of very small amounts of money.

"An Apricot": Just as he's about to leave Sicily, Montalbano finds himself drawn into one last case. A young woman has been found dead at the bottom of a cliff, in what appears to have been a tragic accident. The evidence doesn't add up, however, and despite Mimi's readiness to go for an easy conclusion, Montalbano remains convinced that the truth has still escaped them.

Fireworks are supposed to light up the night sky on the Fourth of July. They're not supposed to come flying into the front lawn of the Happy Haven Retirement Home and strike one of the residents in his keister.

But that's just what happens to gallant Lester Mills, new resident, and charming gentleman, who has risen to offer his seat to fellow resident and amateur sleuth Essie Cobb, when the rocket's red glare smashes into both of them.

As the unconscious Lester is hailed a hero for saving Essie and hauled off to the local hospital, Essie is left to wonder how and why the firecracker landed so precisely on both of them.

Was it really an accident? Did a rocket from the nearby city fireworks' display go awry? Or is there something more sinister behind the explosion?

Essie is determined to find out — — after all, what else is Reardon's most prolific senior citizen/detective to do when she's been firecrackered?
