When Quin St. James and Mike McCleary moved, it looked as if they might be getting out of the business of solving grisly murders as well. But then McCleary's sister becomes the latest victim of a rampaging psycho, and the couple are forced back into solving crime too close to home.

The college town of Gainesville, Florida, is at the mercy of the most terrifying of criminals — a "spree" killer whose sadistic methods leave no doubt about how twisted and dangerous he is … and no clues about where or when he'll strike next. As the trail of random slaughter grows, so does the shocking possibility that a bizarre sex cult might have brought McCleary's sister together with her killer. Even worse, Quin and Mike's relentless investigation will bring them together with the same madman, who intends to finish his bloody job …

Not long after, Andy Walker, Millie's boss, tells her the ship will have some "temporary" staff boarding for this cruise, something that has never happened before.

Later, after the ship sets sail, Millie stops by to greet the captain and Scout, and sparks fly when the captain invites Millie to dine with him in his apartment the following evening.

When Millie arrives for her dinner date the next night, she discovers the bridge is locked and no one will answer the door.

At first, Millie is heartbroken, believing she has been stood up, but soon discovers that something sinister is going on inside the bridge after communications onboard are cut off and the ship stops moving.

Will Millie and her friends, with some help from Gloria and the Garden Girls, be able to figure out who has taken control of their cruise … or will they all become dead in the water?

Murder is a seductive story that keeps Detective Jill Rogers hypnotized and soothes her road-hungry feet. Money and murder — the world's most fascinating subjects. Jill quit romance when she left Sophie Walsh, the love of her life, starved and hurting. Love is for sunny, squishy people, and Jill is dark.

A few things Jill knows for sure: the more violent the crime, the closer the relationship is between victim and murderer. Murder investigation is a two-piece puzzle. One piece is the crime scene and it forms half the picture; the other is the witnesses and suspects. Ideally, the two halves come together and form a complete whole and the case is solved. If they don't, either Jill made a mistake or someone is lying. And she doesn't make mistakes.

Convicted murderer Melvin Mars is counting down the last hours before his execution — for the violent killing of his parents twenty years earlier — when he's granted an unexpected reprieve. Another man has confessed to the crime.

Amos Decker, newly hired on an FBI special task force, takes an interest in Mars's case after discovering the striking similarities to his own life: Both men were talented football players with promising careers cut short by tragedy. Both men's families were brutally murdered. And in both cases, another suspect came forward, years after the killing, to confess to the crime. A suspect who may or may not have been telling the truth.

The confession has the potential to make Melvin Mars — guilty or not — a free man. Who wants Mars out of prison? And why now?

But when a member of Decker's team disappears, it becomes clear that something much larger — and more sinister — than just one convicted criminal's life hangs in the balance. Decker will need all of his extraordinary brainpower to stop an innocent man from being executed.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Randy Rawls

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Randy Rawls

We are delighted to welcome author Randy Rawls to Omnimystery News today.

Randy's third mystery to feature private investigator Beth Bowman is Dating Death (White Bird Publications; April 2016 trade paperback and ebook formats) and we recently had the opportunity to talk more about his work with him.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: Tell us a little more about Beth Bowman. What is it about her that appeals to you as a writer?

Randy Rawls
Photo provided courtesy of
Randy Rawls

Randy Rawls: Beth Bowman is a PI in South Florida. She hails from Richardson, Texas where she grew up and her mother still lives. She's a divorcee, having been married to a lawyer in Dallas. The marriage ended when she caught him in a position with his secretary that Beth thought was reserved for the two of them. After the divorce, she decided Texas wasn't big enough for both of them and moved to Florida.

I like Beth because she has a wonderful sense of humor, is feisty, doesn't give up, no matter how tough the challenge, but is every inch a woman.

OMN: How has Beth developed over the course of the series?

RR: Beth is evolving as situations affect her. She has met a doctor and fallen in love. She has gained a coterie of friends that others might turn their backs on. And, her mother's life is changing also — from lonely widow to fiancée.

OMN: Suppose Beth were to interview you. What would her first question be?

RR: I think she'd ask, "Why me? I don't look for the publicity. I just try to do the job I'm hired to do. Plus, I don't want my homeless friends to lose their invisibility."

I would answer something like, "See the first answer above. I have the utmost respect for you and your friends. In our world today, loyalty and deep friendship are all too often missing. I know Dot would lay down her life for you, and you would for her. I think this is a beautiful relationship, so please don't ask me to stop documenting your cases. Plus, it's fun."

OMN: How true are you to the setting of the books?

RR: My books are set in a fictional town in a real place. Yeah, it's a bit confusing. Beth lives in Coral Lakes, a town in South Florida between Ft. Lauderdale and Boca Raton. Coral Lakes comes from my imagination, and I've used it for Beth and for another series I write, Tom Jeffries, and for a standalone I haven't sold yet. Having Coral Lakes at my disposal means I can make it as big or as small as I want. I can give it whatever neighborhoods I desire. Since many of the major streets run from the southern end of South Florida to the northern end, I can use actual streets and locations, allowing readers to zero in. It's one of the advantages of living here.

OMN: What's next for you?

RR: I have a standalone featuring PI Josh Hawkins that I hope to sell. I still have my sights on a NYC publisher, but … Josh is an ex-Army Special Forces officer who is assisted by a mentor from his days of active duty. Chief is a full-blooded Seminole Indian who lives in the Everglades. They agree to assist a Federal Task Force in eliminating a crime boss that appears to be otherwise untouchable.

Also, I'm early in the writing of a new Christmas story. I suppose for the critics who don't believe in Santa Claus, I should call it a fantasy. But, to me, Jingle is as real as anything else in my life. The story features a character I created a few years ago, Jingle Bell, in the Ace Edwards mystery, Jingle's Christmas. Jingle is one of Santa's elves, and he has a new problem — this time in South Florida. I have some new human characters to assist him — Nep and Cassie. My goal is to have it out by Christmas 2016, but I may not make it.

Randy Rawls grew up in northeastern North Carolina, then did a career in the Army. He's been an avid reader all his life and has tried to incorporate what he has learned from the best into his writing. While he lives in South Florida, his heart resides in Texas.

For more information about the author, please visit his website at RandyRawls.com and his author page on Goodreads, or find him on Facebook.

Who was James Putnam? Answering that question may mean salvation for Alexander Rupert, a Minnesota detective whose life is in a serious downward spiral. A Medal of Valor winner, Alexander is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. He's been reassigned to the Frauds Unit, where he is shunned by his fellow detectives, and he fears his status-seeking wife may be having an affair. When he happens across a complex case of identity theft, Alexander sees an opportunity to rehabilitate his tattered reputation.

But the case explodes into far more than he could have expected, putting him in the path of trained assassin Drago Basta, a veteran of the Balkan wars who has been searching for "James Putnam" for years. As his life spins out of control, Alexander's last hope may be his older brother, Max, a fellow police detective who steps in to try to save his brother from the carnage his investigation has let loose.
