The Grand Palatial hotel's event planner, Anna Winters, has had it up to here with wedding guests dropping dead before the happy couple even gets a chance to have their first dance. Fresh from Jamaica and beginning to make quite a name for herself as an amateur detective, all Anna wants to do is lay low in Barbados. Soak up the sun, maybe smooth things over with her best friend and co-worker, Pauline.

Unfortunately, someone has other, more sinister plans. When the bride collapses during dinner, a victim of poisoned cous cous, all eyes go immediately to Anna for answers. She's barely holding her personal life together with her recent break-up, Cassandra's betrayal and Pauline's cold shoulder. How can she possibly keep her employer from firing her and catch a killer in the meantime?

Relief comes in the form of one Detective Jensen. He knows all about Anna and takes a special interest in her sleuthing ability, among other things, and graciously shares his resources. It's a good thing, too. Otherwise an angry groom, a kidnapping, a rising body count and the notorious Phantom of Barbados might prove to be Anna's final undoing.

Spanish Cape is a dramatic promontory, its rocky cliffs topped with a picturesque hacienda. This isolated spot belongs to millionaire Walter Godfrey and it should be a peaceful family getaway — but one summer evening, Rosa Godfrey argues with her uncle David as he tries to convince her not to run away with one of their guests, the roguish John Marco. Suddenly, a one-eyed gunman appears out of the twilight. He seems to mistake David for John, and forces the pair to the mainland, where he clubs David on the head and locks Rosa in an empty vacation cottage. The next day, Rosa is rescued by the renowned sleuth Ellery Queen, who had come to the coast for a holiday. For a moment, it seems her luck has changed, but then the universe delivers another crushing blow. John has been found stone dead and stark naked.

This will not be the first working vacation for the unfailingly logical Ellery Queen, but to unravel the mystery of the undressed man, he will have to make sense of what happened on the worst night of Rosa Godfrey's life.

Jeff Fenner's life is out of control. At the nadir of a rocky, sometimes-up-usually-down career, he has finally come face-to-face with his demons: he's being investigated by the police, he owes money to the wrong people, and he sees an empty future shutting down in front of him.

When Jeff hears that his sister Marilyn has committed suicide, he refuses to believe she killed herself and he embarks on a tortuous journey toward self-discovery and redemption … and toward the beautiful but troubled Holly Barnes. Holly's own demons have led her to a self-help cult in Beverly Hills called Saving Our Lives (or, perhaps more appropriately, SOL). Through Holly, Jeff learns of a string of apparent suicides eerily similar to his sister's — and that Holly is the next target.

Cork O'Connor, the ex-sheriff of Tamarack County, notices small things about the woman's disappearance that disturb him. When the beloved pet dog of a friend is brutally killed and beheaded, he begins to see a startling pattern in these and other recent dark occurrences in the area. And after his own son is brutally attacked and nearly killed, Cork understands that someone is spinning a deadly web in Tamarack County. Day 198

THE SNOW WAS DEEP, DRIFTING and crusting into whorled shapes under the pale sky. The thermometer nailed to the tree at the edge of the camp area read minus 11, inching down toward the minus-40 line where Fahrenheit and Celsius were equal. Ambrose had a bet with himself that it wouldn't go that far.
He puffed his breath out, watched the faint cloud quickly disappear in the dry Lake Superior air. I'm going to do it today, he thought. I'm going to start today. The time has come.
He walked carefully to the tree where three wood saws hung, and selected the smallest, a band-type saw with an eighteen-inch blade stretched between the ends of a bowed metal tube. The teeth of the saw were deeply serrated, worn from cutting wood, hundreds of small logs and sticks that had kept them from freezing. He tested the teeth. For all the work they had performed, they remained remarkably sharp. This saw would do, this saw and his hunting knife.
He checked the leg pocket of his pants for the waterproof match container. In the same pocket there were three fire-starter pellets. No shortage of those.
As Ambrose left the clearing, Maureen and Ashai looked up. Ambrose flipped his fingers in a little wave. Ashai nodded back. Maureen looked at him for a moment and then went back to the tedious job of softening boiled lichen with her teeth. It was all they'd had to eat for five days.
Ambrose walked slowly and with great care along the trail to Rudy's camp, the little saw hanging heavy in his hand. As he walked, his eyes darted from side to side, alert for a rabbit or a vole or perhaps even a fox, but there was no sign of edible life, only fir trees and yew bushes.
Ambrose had been hungry before. He had gone without food for three days on a camping trip in Manitoba. It had not been pleasant, but at the end of the third day they had arrived back at their truck and driven straight to an all-night diner at the intersection of Route 124 and old route 42 where their hunger was soon sated with pancakes and maple syrup.
Here, it had settled into a rhythm. When he woke in the middle of the night, and again in the morning, well before dawn, there was an empty feeling in his stomach, an urgent pull, a void. He knew the feeling would come, and he was afraid of it. Usually, it went away for a few hours during the daylight. Then it came back.
Sometimes, with the others, Ambrose drank hot water just to have some feeling in his belly, but the water didn't make the empty feeling go away. From the dreaded gnawing, it would progress to a sense of weakness. At the really bad moments, when he sat or lay in the darkness, he could feel his strength draining from his extremities toward the center of his body, a sense that his vital parts were demanding nourishment, and his blood was pulling his energy inward like a turtle retracting its head and legs.
At those moments, Ambrose felt himself becoming weaker and, truly, when he stood up afterward he felt as though his body would not do what he asked, chop wood or walk far. At such moments there was no question of returning to the den he shared with Cecily. He sat down or lay back and hoped for that terrible draining, weakening sensation to go away.
It didn't take long to reach the clearing on the north shore. What was left of Rudy's shelter was barely visible under the deep snow, but it was enough to mark the shallow grave where they had left Rudy's body two months before.
Ambrose went to work. Under a stiff, frozen tarpaulin and a few inches of frozen dirt lay a hundred pounds of frozen meat. It was time.
There was a layer of fresh powder and then a crust, but the crust was thin and Ambrose broke it with his boot heel, quickly uncovering Rudy's grave. The blue tarp just showed through the dirt. They had dumped enough soil on top of the tarp so the foxes and raccoons wouldn't find it interesting. With the body frozen, there would be no smell. On that, at least, they had been right. There was no sign of animal digging.
Ambrose pushed the soil back with his gloved hands, standing from time to time to kick at a heavy frozen clod with his boots, then working again on his knees until the blue tarp over Rudy's body was uncovered. He tugged at the corners of the tarp near where he knew Rudy's head would be. It took some more kicking and digging until the corners came free. Then he pulled the tarp back slowly, one corner, then the other. There was Rudy. Frozen solid. His once-dark face was nearly white, ashen. One hand stuck off awkwardly to the side, the head turned back in the direction of the main camp.
Ambrose slid his hunting knife carefully out of its sheath and slowly, fearfully, began cutting the back of Rudy's parka pants.

***

"Do you think they'll do it?" Janice McNeely said. She was staring at the #12 monitor.
Jimmy Asaki looked up. "Yes," he said. "They're starving."
  "They've uncovered him. Look."
  "I see."
"If they do it, do you think Bud will air it?"
  "Probably."
"Maybe they'll keep it away from the open mikes."
"I don't think they care about that anymore. I don't think they care what reaches the open lines. They're fighting for their lives."

Future viewing audiences have become totally desensitized to violence and entirely dependent on sensation to escape their boring workaday lives — an addiction nurtured by the media with graphic portrayals of war and crime and with so-called reality programming. Now, TV execs in pursuit of the only things they care about — higher ratings and bigger paychecks — have created the ultimate reality show: Seven people, each bearing the scars of his or her past, are deposited on an island in the middle of Lake Superior. Given some bare necessities and the promise of $400,000 each if they can endure, the three women and four men risk death by starvation or freezing as the Great Lakes winter approaches.

The island is wired for sound, and flying drones provide the video feed, so everything the contestants do and say is broadcast worldwide. Their seven-month ordeal is entirely unscripted, they can't ask for help or they forfeit the prize, and as far as the network is concerned — the fewer survivors the better.

DECEMBER 12
  Christmas sucks.
  Especially on nights like this.
Detective Helene Collias studied the young woman's picture—shoulder blade length dark brown hair, bright hazel eyes, vibrant, pretty. How different she looked here, from the visage of the young woman on the gurney outside. Death changed a person's face, she knew this all too well.
A rush of air blasted from her lungs. Thank God it wasn't a child. She sent up a silent prayer for the young woman's soul. There. Now go away, Chelsea. I have work to do.
The ghost of the woman looked different as she stood there, glaring—her jeans and body pale, see through, her face gaunt, angry. She pointed to the street.
I don't understand you, Helene said. You'll have to speak if you want to be understood.
The ghostly woman didn't oblige so Helene turned back to the investigation before her. She'd just have to help solve the woman's murder the old fashioned way, she supposed.
Beyond her door with its festive Christmas wreath decorated with bows and two small kissing dolls dressed like Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, Helene knew no joy resided here tonight. She turned her attention away from her colleagues' muttered graveyard humor to study the house's owner, Sean Grant. His handsome face twisted in puzzled grief as he stood on the porch reluctant to enter his own home. Though he tried to hide it, tried to retain the capable father visage, he seemed confused, and stunned, if she'd ever seen anyone stunned. He kept pushing the sleeves of his fawn-colored coat back, pulling them down.
How funny life was. Why, of all the detectives to come out to the Grants' place for something like this, did you have to be the one on call? She hadn't seen Sean Grant since the senior cruise when they'd been rather hot and heavy for a good week, the summer of 2002, and now this. How odd life is.
  No, odd doesn't cover it.
She suppressed a shudder and stepped forward, offering her hand. "Mr. Grant?"
"That's me." His hazel gaze moved over the couch, the walls, seeking answers, and finding none.
"I'm Detective Helene Collias, with Holly Municipal Police, homicide. I'm sorry for your loss, sir."
His brow furrowed, drawing deep lines across his handsome face as he nodded. "Right. I screwed up, didn't I?"
His horror and sadness permeated her and tied a knot in her chest. She jammed her hands into her pockets. "No sir. No one's saying that. Sometimes you can't foresee these things."
  "Is that right, Detective?"
She winced at the bitter tone in his query. How many loved ones had shouted at her like this? She understood, even though she was just the detective assigned to his case.
He scanned the room as if seeking Chelsea. Intense pain flitted across his eyes before a mask came down. The hard father figure returned. "What happened?"
"I can't tell you much. Maybe you can help us out here. Tell us a little about your sister." She wondered how long his composure would last, for Sean hadn't gone upstairs, yet. She had and she could still smell the blood, see the brain matter staining his sister's pillow. The Vicks' vapor rub she'd slathered under her nose couldn't quite cut the stench.
His jaw worked, showing off a little dimple. "Why don't you give me your version first?"
Poor fella. She didn't want to be the one to do this. She didn't want to be here right now. She'd rather be anywhere else, any other murder scene.
He paced the porch as she explained what little she could. The dimple showed again as he peered through the door, lined with white forensics boards.
"So you think it's someone we know?" Sean asked.
Helene gave back her best blank look. "Just covering all the bases. Is there somewhere we can talk?"
He said nothing as he turned away.
Helene scanned the neighborhood. She'd have to intrude on the people next door. But she didn't get a chance to make the suggestion.
"Sean?" A shaky, young feminine voice met her ears.
Sean whipped around and gasped his sister's name, "Bianca!"
The teen scrambled up the porch steps and into his arms, bursting into tears. "She seemed fine when I last saw her." She sniffled, and looked up at him. "What happened?"
Helene noticed Sean's throat working hard to keep tears from welling up. She nodded to the blond man waiting a few steps away, hands shoved in his pockets. She bit her lip and turned to the next phase of her work, hoping for a clue that might give them an answer.

* * * *

Sean looked out the neighbor's kitchen window, thinking about his sister. Chelsea had come to the Whitfield's house, had sat in this very kitchen almost every day after school. She'd moved to El Paso after high school and hadn't wanted to leave her life there, had felt ashamed to ask for her childhood bedroom when her money and plans went down the tubes, but knew she was always welcome. She'd seemed at ease here, even to enjoy being home.
Now her contentment was gone. "It's wrong," Sean said.
The detective blinked at him. "Excuse me?"
"Our house feels wrong," he said. "I've been around other people's houses all my life, and not one of them ever felt as screwed up as mine. Or as it does now."
Detective Collias changed the subject, drawing Sean's attention away from his work, hurling questions at him he didn't know how to answer: "What about boyfriends? Did she have any boyfriends?"
Boyfriends? He looked up at her. Why do I know her? He shook his head. "She had a date last week."
  "Did you get his name?"
He blew out a deep breath. "She never said."
"Have you ever seen him before?"
Sean wanted to poke his fingers in his ears and shout until he could hear nothing else. Chelsea dead. It was inconceivable! "No. Most of the people I saw her with were female." Weren't they? "Yeah, mostly other gals."
The detective's cheek twitched as she scribbled the detail down. "Names?"
"God, I don't know! Missy, Vanessa, Sally. I'm not sure of any others."
The pretty detective—what was her name? He couldn't remember right now. He clenched his fist. He didn't care. She didn't belong here. Chelsea did.
She laid a calming hand on his arm and smiled sadly. "Come on, now. Don't you think Bianca's had enough for one night?"
He bit his lip, gazing at the girl. He rubbed a hand along his sister's shoulders. "I'm sorry, Bea."
The detective turned her back and poked through the cabinets and refrigerator until she found what she sought. She rounded the table, handed Bianca a glass of Coke, and took a chair by her side, reached out and pushed hair off the girl's tear-wet face. Calm assurance shone in her liquid brown eyes. "Do you have somewhere to sleep tonight? I'd like to get y'all settled before too long, sir."
Sir? How old did she think he was?
  Aren't we the same age?
He didn't think he cared. At least Detective Collias was older than Chelsea. She had survived her first years away from home. She'd made it out here alive to investigate this … this disgusting nightmare. He looked over the small, southern country style house, the Whitfield's family pictures hanging on every wall, and his breath hitched in his throat. Bile threatened but he held it back, and hoped no one noticed the tears burning his eyes.

Tis the season … for death.

Murder reminds Detective Helene Collias of Holly PD that crime doesn't respect holidays. And the last victim she ever expected to find in her case files is the sister of her old flame, Sean Grant.

Ordinarily, Helene's psychic gifts give her an edge but this time, that gift has short-circuited. Could her lingering attraction to Sean be blurring her abilities, or is something more sinister at work?

A Conversation with Suspense Novelist Timothy Patten

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Timothy Patten

We are delighted to welcome back author Timothy Patten to Omnimystery News.

Earlier this week we featured an excerpt from Timothy's new suspense thriller Money, Family, Murder (TMP Novels; July 2015 trade paperback and ebook formats) and today we're catching up with him to talk more about the book.

Omnimystery News: Tell us a little more about the lead characters of Money, Family, Murder.

Timothy Patten: Johnny and Tiffany Barnes are a family oriented, affluent family in the beautiful oceanside city of Newport Beach, California. They aren't overly ostentatious like some ultra-wealthy, high profile people might be. Janice Martland is high powered, egotistical woman who makes it her goal to put Johnny Barnes away in jail so she can get reelected as the county district attorney. She stakes everything on convicting Mr. Barnes by bending some rules and evidence along the way.

OMN: We categorized your book as a suspense thriller. Would you agree with that?

TP: Yes. I am not sure if there are any disadvantages of labeling it such except that some readers might be looking for a thriller book which has more action or violence in it. In this book, Johnny searches for clues and answers to his dilemma when he finds out that he is accused of several murders. There are some intense conflicts between the characters and definite moments of suspense.

OMN: How much of your own personal or professional experience have you included in the book?

TP: I don't know anyone like the characters that are in it. However, I was struck in the right bicep a few years ago in a charity golf event by an errant golf ball by another golfer who teed off on the next fairway over from us. It felt like I was shot in the arm from nowhere! My daughter did have her social security number stolen from her two years ago and later found on April 16th that someone had already filed a tax return for 2012 using her name and tax ID number and received a tax refund from the IRS in the Midwest. So when our family CPA informed her that the IRS refused her electronic tax return, then I drove my daughter over to two different IRS offices in Orange County to inform them of the issue and eventually filed an affidavit of stolen identity. She ended up filing a hard copy version of her return and it took almost a year to get resolution to the problem which even the IRS confessed is a serious and rampant problem in America today.

OMN: Is there any particular place that influenced the setting of the story?

TP: I have grown up near water my whole life. Our family home was a few blocks from Lake Michigan in a north shore suburb of Chicago, I attended college in Miami, Florida and swam and sailed many weekends in Biscayne Bay. Today I live a few minutes drive from the Pacific Ocean in Orange County, California. When I was growing up, my family would pack all eight kids in a station wagon and drive to Boston or Ft. Lauderdale for either our spring or summer vacations. We always rented a cabin cruiser or sail boat and cruised around the local waters.

OMN: What are some of your outside interests?

TP: I have been a member of my golf club for eleven years and enjoy playing in golf events with my friends, wife and son. Once or twice a year we go deep sea fishing in Cabo, Mexico, or in the local waters off of the coastline. I met my wife playing tennis at a local tennis club in Irvine over twenty seven years ago and we used to love snow skiing together until my knees couldn't take the stress anymore. I love philanthropy and have been on the finance committee and Board of Directors at Orangewood Children's Foundation for three years to help raise money for abused and foster children in Orange County and I have also been on the Shady Canyon Charitable Foundation committee for three years to help raise donations for local non-profit organizations.

OMN: Suppose Money, Family, Murder were to be adapted for television or film. Who do you see playing the key roles?

TP: I can see Matthew McConaughey or George Clooney playing Johnny Barnes and Julia Roberts or maybe Sandra Bullock playing Tiffany Barnes. For the district attorney, Kate Winslet or a young looking Meryl Streep. Angelina Jolie comes to mind to be the part of Savannah McGinty who is Tiffany's sister-in-law.
