A Conversation with Mystery Author Susan Russo Anderson

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Susan Russo Anderson

We are delighted to welcome author Susan Russo Anderson to Omnimystery News today, courtesy of Great Escapes Book Tours, which is coordinating her current book tour. We encourage you to visit all of the participating host sites; you can find her schedule here.

Susan is the author of the Fina Fitzgibbons mystery series, which began with Too Quiet in Brooklyn (December 2013; trade paperback, audiobook and ebook formats). We recently had the opportunity to spend some time with her to talk more about her character and the series.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: Introduce us to Fina Fitzgibbons. What is it about her that appeals to you as a writer?

Susan Russo Anderson
Photo provided courtesy of
Susan Russo Anderson

Susan Russo Anderson: The main character of this mystery series is Fina Fitzgibbons, a twenty-two year-old detective who lives with her boyfriend, Denny, in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn. She mourns the loss of her mother, sometimes with an overwhelming ache. She hasn't forgiven her father for leaving. She fears loving and losing. She fears giving up herself. She's wary of trampling on the privacy of others. She's not perfect, not by a long shot. Sometimes she takes Denny for granted; sometimes she's jealous of Detective First Grade Jane Templeton; sometimes she makes snap judgments. But she's smart and she's got that wizard thing going on. And something else about Fina — she never, ever gives up.

OMN: How has Fina changed over the course of the series?

SRA: I try to develop the main characters over time. Some of them grow more than others. Like all of us, they take two steps forward, one back.

OMN: How do you go about finding the right voice for your characters?

SRA: What's challenging for me is to find the right voice for each character. I do that by writing longhand in a notebook, sort of stream of consciousness. What's challenging is finding the right voice for age-specific characters. I'm in my late sixties and find it difficult to think like a thirteen-year-old. I have to read and listen to my grandchildren talking, and write their voice.

OMN: How would you tweet a summary of the first book in this series, Too Quiet in Brooklyn?

SRA: TOO QUIET IN BROOKLYN: A Murder, A Kidnapping, And One Woman Who Never Gives Up http://myBook.to/TQIB

OMN: How much of your own personal or professional experience have you included in your books?

SRA: My series takes place in Brooklyn. None of the situations are real, but I hope they are realistic. I lived in Brooklyn from the late 80s to 2002 and loved it. But you never quite leave Brooklyn, not really. When I go back it seems the same, if a little bit cleaner behind the ears and A LOT more expensive.

OMN: Tell us about your writing process.

SRA: I get up in the morning and write which I do until noon. I work on two books at one time, writing a first draft in the morning, editing in the afternoon. After editing, I market (work on a marketing plan). When I take a break, I walk, which is how I plot or listen to a book or music. I read in the late afternoon until dinner. While watching TV, I tweet and Facebook.

OMN: How true are you to the Brooklyn setting of your books?

SRA: My books take place in Brooklyn, but it is the Brooklyn in my head. Some of the places are real to the extent they exist; others, I invent. But I write fiction, so all places are fictionalized. Which, I suppose, can be said of any place once it's in memory. I'm thinking of a William Faulkner quote: "a place where winter never seemed to touch."

OMN: If we could send you anywhere in the world to research the setting for a story, all expenses paid, where would it be?

SRA: Paris in early summer, looking out over the Seine from my penthouse in a refurbished nineteenth-century limestone on the Left Bank.

OMN: What are some of your outside interests? And have any of these found their way into your books?

SRA: Oil Painting, photography. Some of my characters are painters.

OMN: What is the best advice you've received as an author?

SRA: Write and read until your eyeballs fall out.

OMN: Complete this sentence for us: "I am a mystery author and thus I am also …".

SRA: … fascinated with death and the mystery of life.

OMN: Do you use a pen name?

SRA: I use Susan Russo Anderson. I suppose it is one of my legal names, since the middle name is my mother's maiden name. I believe some Hispanics use their mother's maiden name as part of their name. But there are so many Susan Andersons that I had to distinguish myself from the rest.

OMN: How did you come up with the title for Too Quiet in Brooklyn?

SRA: Too Quiet in Brooklyn is a paraphrase of one of the lines in the book. It takes place in Brooklyn, and Brooklyn is many things, but it is never quiet. Unless something bad is about to happen.

OMN: What kind of feedback have you received from readers?

SRA: I think of reviews as something for readers and not authors, so I try not to read them (best-laid plans), but I love the ones that talk about my characters.

OMN: Suppose your series was to be adapted for television or film. Who do you see playing the lead role?

SRA: I'm not good with actor names and also would hate to name an actor in case a reader didn't have that same mental image of my main character, Fina Fitzgibbons. But it would have to be someone with high energy and a mouth.

OMN: What kinds of books did you read when you were young?

SRA: Favorite book of all time: I fell in love with Paris through the hobo in A Family Under the Bridge. But there were lots of writers and books I loved as a child and young adult: whoever wrote the Nancy Drew books, as well as Georges Simenon, Ross MacDonald, Agatha Christie, James Joyce (not that I understood him when I was ten, but I loved the sound of his language), T.S. Eliot, lots of early twentieth-century American writers, even Hemingway. Love love love A Moveable Feast.

OMN: And what do you read now for pleasure?

SRA: Mysteries and literary fiction.

OMN: Create a Top 5 list for us on any topic.

SRA: Top 5 favorite authors:

• Hilary Mantel;
• James Joyce;
• Margaret Atwood;
• Saul Bellow; and
• Anita Brookner.

OMN: What's next for you?

SRA: I'm editing the fourth book in this mystery series and beginning a new series. I think.

When a casino robbery in Atlantic City goes horribly awry, the man who orchestrated it is obliged to call in a favor from someone who's occasionally called Jack. While it's doubtful that anyone knows his actual name or anything at all about his true identity, or even if he's still alive, he's in his mid-thirties and lives completely off the grid, a criminal's criminal who does entirely as he pleases and is almost impossible to get in touch with.

But within hours a private jet is flying this exceptionally experienced fixer and cleaner-upper from Seattle to New Jersey and right into a spectacular mess: one heister dead in the parking lot, another winged but on the run, the shooter a complete mystery, the $1.2 million in freshly printed bills god knows where and the FBI already waiting for Jack at the airport, to be joined shortly by other extremely interested and elusive parties. He has only forty-eight hours until the twice-stolen cash literally explodes, taking with it the wider, byzantine ambitions behind the theft.

To contend with all this will require every gram of his skill, ingenuity and self-protective instincts, especially when offense and defense soon become meaningless terms. And as he maneuvers these exceedingly slippery slopes, he relives the botched bank robbery in Kuala Lumpur five years earlier that has now landed him this unwanted new assignment.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Kate Charles

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Kate Charles

We are delighted to welcome author Kate Charles to Omnimystery News today.

Kate's fourth mystery to feature Reverend Callie Anson is False Tongues (Poisoned Pen Press; April 2015 hardcover, trade paperback and ebook formats) and we recently had a chance to spend some time with her to talk more about the book and the series.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: When starting a new book, how do you decide whether it will be one of a series or a stand-alone?

Kate Charles
Photo provided courtesy of
Kate Charles; Photo credit
Michelle Jones

Kate Charles: I've written both series (2 of them) and stand-alones, depending more on publishing trends than personal preference. Both have their attractions and their drawbacks. On the whole, because my books are character-driven, I think I prefer to write a series with ongoing characters who can be developed from book to book. In fact, in my new book I've actually used a character from one of my stand-alones in a fairly major role, as well as a character from my previous series. So maybe I've created a whole new category!

OMN: Into what fiction genre (or mystery subgenre) would you place your books?

KC: I hate labels! Reducing a book to a label inevitably diminishes it. But it does help readers, not to mention publishers and booksellers. My books aren't cosy, nor are they hard-boiled. Soft-boiled, maybe? They have elements of police procedure, but also often involve amateur detectives. I don't mind being classified as "clerical crime" or "ecclesiastical crime".

OMN: Tell us a little more about your writing process.

KC: I'm very much an organic writer. I start with a theme or situation, then quickly develop the characters and get to know them fairly well before I start writing. From there on, I sit back and let it happen. As far as I'm concerned, that's where the joy of writing exists — in discovering, along with my readers, where the characters take me. If I had to write a synopsis before I started, it wouldn't be fun any more.

OMN: How do you go about researching the plot points of your stories?

KC: The Internet is a marvellous thing! Most facts can be checked on the fly, and that includes using Google maps to see what places look like, figure out how to get from A to B, and how long it will take to do so. The danger, of course, is getting side-tracked into interesting diversions as a form of writing avoidance.

OMN: How true are you to the settings of your books?

KC: I try to avoid using real places. The Callie books are set in a very real and recognisable part of London, but the you wouldn't be able to find most of the locations on a map. It's much more fun to make up places — some of the churches in my books may be inspired by real churches, but I enjoy inventing their own histories and architecture. The creation of Malbury Cathedral, in Appointed to Die, was such a joy! And it was much safer, on so many levels, than using a "real" cathedral.

OMN: If we could send you anywhere in the world to research the setting for a book, where would it be?

KC: Venice, without a doubt! Most beautiful, tantalising, intriguing city in the world, IMHO. I think that Callie and Mark should go there on their honeymoon!

OMN: What are some of your outside interests? And have any of these found their way into your books?

KC: Not surprisingly, my activities tend to be church-centric. I love music, particularly English choral music, and wherever I've lived I've always sung in the church choir. My books do feature the occasional eccentric church musician — I've known a few! I'm also keen on cooking, so food usually plays a part in my books. Lucy Kingsley (in the Book of Psalms series) is an accomplished (vegetarian) cook, and Mark Lombardi (in the Callie Anson series) comes from a family who run an Italian restaurant.

OMN: Do you use a pen name?

KC: Yes! I love using a pen name! It can be confusing at times, especially for my husband (when he's called Mr. Charles), but it allows me to compartmentalise my life. In "real life" I'm quite a shy person, definitely an introvert, but when I assume the persona of Kate Charles I can behave with much more confidence.

OMN: How do you come up with the titles for your books?

KC: Most of my book titles are taken from the Psalms. In some cases, the title actually comes before anything else. False Tongues is one of those — the words resonated, and inspired a book exploring all of the ways in which the tongue can do damage, whether it be lies, malicious gossip, or bullying.

OMN: What kind of feedback have you received from readers?

KC: The most common communication I get from readers has to do with my first series, the "Book of Psalms" mysteries. For some reason, people love those books and continue to read them, more than twenty years on. A typical e-mail would be along the lines of 'I love all your books, but the David and Lucy books are my favourites. Are you ever going to write another one?' This is rather bittersweet for me. I'm delighted that people still enjoy those books, and I'm thrilled to be able to tell them that they're all being re-published this summer (by SPCK/Marylebone House) with stunning new covers and special introductions, but it's unlikely that I'll ever write another one. Too much water under the bridge, unfortunately!

OMN: What kinds of books did you read when you were young?

KC: I grew up reading English children's books, which fuelled in me the desire to live in England. My mother's taste in reading — lots and lots of mysteries — influenced me to graduate from Peter Pan and Mary Poppins to Agatha Christie and other Golden Age writers. I read all of Christie, all of Sayers, all of Tey, Allingham and Marsh. P.D. James began writing when I was a young teen, and she quickly became a big favourite, and a huge influence. When it was finally time to write my first book, it wouldn't have occurred to me that it could be anything but a mystery — and an English one, at that.

OMN: And what do you read today for pleasure?

KC: These days I don't read much in the crime genre — I find that I'm way too picky and critical, looking at it from the other side! I am more likely to read literary or popular fiction, as well favourite classics like Jane Austen. And Barbara Pam, of course — her wonderful novels, which have had a huge influence on my writing, remain my firm favourites.

OMN: What's next for you?

KC: I have been thinking for a long time about writing a very different type of book, but that is now somewhat on the back burner, as I've decided that there needs to be one more Callie Anson book, to tie up a few loose ends and leave matters in a satisfactory place.

The Reverend Callie Anson should have learned her lesson by now: revisiting the past is seldom a good idea. But she succumbs to peer pressure and attends a reunion at her theological college in Cambridge, where she is forced to confront painful memories — and the presence of her clueless ex, Adam.

Margaret Phillips, the Principal of the college, has a chance for happiness but before she can grasp it she has to deal with her own ghosts — as well as corrosive, intrusive gossip. Both Margaret and Callie learn something about themselves, and about forgiveness, from wise retired priest John Kingsley.

Meanwhile, in London, police officers Neville Stewart and Mark Lombardi are involved with the latest stabbing of a teenager. Was the victim — gifted, popular schoolboy Sebastian Frost — all he seemed to be, or was there something in his life that led inevitably to his death? The police find themselves plunged into the queasy world of cyber-bullying, where nothing may be as it seems.

While they're apart, Callie and Mark's relationship is on hold, and his Italian family continues to be an issue. Will Mark realize, before it's too late, that while his family will always be important to him, he is entitled to something for himself?

Her second day doing doctoral research in the basement archives of Siddley Hall, England's grandest Tudor home, American Antonia Townley stumbles upon the hall's curator with a knife plunged into his chest. Police suspect Antonia of being the killer because of two insignificant — to her — reasons: The first is the pesky matter of her fingerprints on the murder weapon. The second is the unfortunate email she had sent to her sister saying she would kill for the curator's job.

Handsome bachelor Frederick Percy, Lord Rockford of Siddley Hall, learns that the curator was on the trail of the Percy family monstrance, the most valuable monstrance in England before Henry VIII's dissolution. Frederick becomes convinced that the curator's death is tied to the priceless artifact, and he must find it before the killer does to free Antonia from suspicion of murder. More importantly, Frederick vows to protect the beautiful scholar against the menacing forces after her.

But as Frederick and Antonia crisscross England seeking information on the Percy Monstrance, it becomes clear that someone is stalking her every move. Could Frederick, the man Antonia has fallen in love with, be the very person who is out to destroy her?
