Nominees for the 2015 Mid-Year Dagger Awards Announced by the CWA
New This Week: Famous Blue Raincoat, A Short Story Collection by Ed Gorman
Omnimystery News is pleased to present a mystery, suspense, or thriller ebook that we recently found by sleuthing (as it were) through new or recently reissued titles from independent publishers during May 2015 and priced $4.99 or less …
Famous Blue Raincoat by Ed Gorman
A Short Story Collection
Publisher: Crossroad Press
Price: $3.99 (as of 05/16/2015 at 6:30 PM ET).
Ed Gorman's mystery short stories have a flavor found nowhere else among contemporary writers. His tales have an amazing breadth of style and plot — classical detection, private eye stories, biter-bit tales in which criminous schemes turn back on the perpetrator, and straight crime stories.
What they all have in common is a recognition that we cannot escape our past. The Judge Whitney-Cody McCain stories are filled with the sights and sounds of small-town America around 1958. The Closing Circle is both a detective story and a sensitive evocation of a girl coming of age. The Cage and Favor and the Princess are not only pure detection but also about understanding your first love years later.
You may like some of the protagonists, such as private eye Jack Dwyer in Eye of the Beholder, and despise others, including the narrator in Our Kind of Guy, but all of Ed Gorman's stories are filled with the truth of human experience.

Price: $3.99 (as of 05/16/2015 at 5:30 PM ET).
When Detective Chief Inspector Frank Miller says goodbye to Samantha Thompson after a few drinks in the local pub he thinks little more of it. The next morning, however, his life is shaken to the core. His Detective Sergeant, Paul Riddle, is forced to suspend Miller from duty. There has been a murder. And the victim was Samantha. Miller has little choice but to oblige, but DS Riddle certainly does not believe his partner is involved.
Going against police protocol Riddle confides to Miller that Samantha's body was left in a particularly macabre way. She was left naked with the body of a large, black crow placed across her torso. Its wings had been spread out to form a cross. And her feet had been disfigured with carvings of crucifixes. Is this the work of a deranged murderer? Or some sort of Satanic ritual?
Miller has to go behind the backs of the police force in a desperate attempt to clear his name. Can Miller get to the heart of the mystery behind this gruesome killing? Was it a random attack? Or did Samantha realise it is not "better the devil you know"?

Peter Wilcox is a bright-eyed and fluffy-tailed new attorney, who witnesses the "hit" of the managing partner in his law firm. Because of this inadvertent run-in and supposed link with the mafia, Peter can't find another job anywhere and is forced to tend his kids full-time while his wife, Alison, brings home the bacon. Peter hates the new job: His young kids are a whirlwind of destruction wherever they go, his daughter suffers from a crippling fear of an imaginary alligator, and he and Alison seem to be growing further and further apart as she works long hours.
As it turns out, Alison is not an interior designer, as Peter was led to believe, but is the assassin who killed Peter's boss — a fact that Peter is none-too-happy about — and things really get crazy when Alison's Mafioso peers decide that she is better off dead. What follows is a hilarious romp, as the emasculated Peter has to deal with a super-cool-femme-fatale of a wife, while he and his two kids are mercilessly thrust into a world of gangsters and professional hit men.

It's the winter solstice in snowy Everland and the witching world is all aglow in twinkling illuma lights, enchanted fir trees, and sparkling snow. Holiday cheer is in the air for everyone — everyone, that is, except Elspeth Mayhem.
Elspeth feels bewildered after losing so much time away from her daughters — Clover, Vivi, and Honora. The holidays remind her that, upon her return to Everland, she'd found three grown witches with lives of their own instead of the girls she'd left behind. Hoping to learn more about them, Elspeth turns to her old friend Esmeralda Card and her magical crystal ball to help her see into the past, her daughters' pasts.
With Esmeralda as her guide, Elspeth visits Vivi's early days in The Potion Garden when a strange wizard tried to steal her potions, tags along on Honora's first case as a wannabe P.I. in the seedy magical streets of Stargazer City, and witnesses Clover's first success as a word witch as she sells her first Spellbinders novel while writing a dark fairy tale that might be a little too realistic.
After witnessing their wild adventures, Elspeth reunites with her daughters and gives them a special Mayhem surprise to remind them of where they came from — a family of unique witches.

Review: A Deadly Affair at Bobtail Ridge by Terry Shames
A Mysterious Review of A Deadly Affair at Bobtail Ridge by Terry Shames. A Samuel Craddock Mystery.
Review summary: This is a very good mystery with an intriguing storyline. It's never clear where the plot is going and how it will be resolved, both positive elements. The cast of characters is well drawn and the small town setting is completely on point. A strong entry in this series, one that is recommended. (Click here for text of full review.)
