Seven for a Secret by Lyndsay Faye

Seven for a Secret
Lyndsay Faye
Series: Timothy Wilde (2nd)

Six months after the formation of the NYPD, its most reluctant and talented officer, Timothy Wilde, thinks himself well versed in his city's dark practices — until he learns of the gruesome underworld of lies and corruption ruled by the "blackbirders", who snatch free Northerners of color from their homes, masquerade them as slaves, and sell them South to toil as plantation property.

The abolitionist Timothy is horrified by these traders in human flesh. But in 1846, slave catching isn't just legal — it's law enforcement.

When the beautiful and terrified Lucy Adams staggers into Timothy's office to report a robbery and is asked what was stolen, her reply is, "My family." Their search for her mixed-race sister and son will plunge Timothy and his feral brother, Valentine, into a world where police are complicit and politics savage, and corpses appear in the most shocking of places. Timothy finds himself caught between power and principles, desperate to protect his only brother and to unravel the puzzle before all he cares for is lost.

Nice Weekend for a Murder by Max Allan Collins

Nice Weekend for a Murder by Max Allan Collins
A Mallory Mystery
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

A mountaintop mansion. A motley collection of guests. A murder. This weekend has all the makings of a classic, cozy mystery story. And a story is all it's supposed to be — acted out by noted authors and eager fans at the atmospheric Mohonk Mountain House resort in upstate New York.

Along with a gaggle of his peers, Mallory's been invited to join the fun by donning a costume and an alter-ego to pose as a "suspect". But before you can say "nobody leaves this room!", Mallory is once again thrust into the role of driven detective when the game's designated "corpse" turns up decidedly dead.

There's no doubt that the victim, notorious mystery-novel critic Kirk Rath, incited the murderous wrath of nearly every writer he reviewed. But even the most scathing critical barbs never drove a writer to put down the pen in favor of the sword. And even Mallory is baffled by the curious circumstances surrounding the mystery within a mystery. Did he actually witness Rath being run through by a masked figure in the snowy darkness? Was Rath really spotted alive and sneering after the bloody fact? Is someone playing mind games? And is everyone in the house fair game?

Murder will out, as they say. But can even the masterful Mallory outwit a roguish gallery of the finest plotters in print?

A Famine of Horses by P. F. Chisholm
A Sir Robert Carey Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Poisoned Pen Press

In the year 1592, Sir Robert Carey, a handsome courtier, comes north to Carlisle to take up his new post as Deputy Warden of the West March. He has wangled his appointment to be nearer his true love, a married woman, and farther from the gimlet eyes of his creditors and the disapproving eye of his father (the Queen's cousin — possibly her half-brother). And of course, he can use the money …

Sir Robert is quick to realize he won't see a profit from the perks if he fails to keep the peace. Alas, he is quickly challenged by the murder of a local lad, the possible betrayal of a disappointed rival, the ire of the lady's husband, and the question of the horses—the hundreds of horses being stolen from all over the neighborhood. It's hard to say whether the greater danger lies without the city walls amidst the scheming Scots — or within, amidst the unruly English garrison.

Absence of Light by Zoe Sharp

Absence of Light by Zoe Sharp
A Charlie Fox Novella
Publisher: Murderati Ink
Publication Date: September 09, 2013

A major earthquake sees Charlie Fox on a transport plane headed for the scene of devastation. The way things are coming apart at home with Sean Meyer, she welcomes the chance to get away.

Tasked as security advisor to the specialist team at the centre of relief efforts, Charlie knows it won't be easy. The team members are willing to put themselves in constant danger as a matter of course. But what kind of other risks are they prepared to take?

As Charlie soon discovers, it's not just the ground beneath her feet that cannot be relied on. Her predecessor died conveniently while investigating rumours that the team were on the take, Charlie's been instructed to quietly uncover whether his death was as accidental as the official verdict suggests. If it was an accident, why are they so obviously lying to her?

Charlie must move with care through a shifting landscape to find the answers before there are more than just earthquake victims buried in the rubble. And when disaster strikes she will learn not only whom she can trust, but whether she can she survive the darkness that comes with a total absence of light.

A Conversation with Romantic Suspense Novelist Carla Neggers

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Carla Neggers
with Carla Neggers

We are delighted to welcome novelist Carla Neggers to Omnimystery News today.

Carla's new novel of romantic suspense is Declan's Cross (Harlequin Mira; August 2013 hardcover, large print, and ebook formats), the third in her Sharpe & Donovan series.

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Carla and talk about her series.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: After publishing Saint's Gate, in which Sharpe and Donovan are introduced, why did you decide to continue to write a series with these characters?

Carla Neggers
Photo provided courtesy of
Carla Neggers — Photo credit Julie Ireland

Carla Neggers: Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan had to be recurring characters. There was never any question. Emma's an ex-nun from a family of international art detectives. He's a former state marine patrol officer and lobsterman. They're both FBI agents. They — and their relationship — develop over time. It's not so much that I chose this course with them as it just had to be! They have complex and complicated lives that make for multiple stories. We also have their family, friends and colleagues. Finian Bracken, an Irish priest who lands up in Colin's hometown, a struggling Maine fishing village, has become a reader favorite (and a favorite of mine!). Let's just say Father Bracken has a past. It's all great fun for me as a writer, and I hope, of course, for readers.

OMN: Are any of the characters based on, or inspired by, real people?

CN: I don't base characters on real people, but the Irish setting for Declan's Cross arose out of one of my many trips to Ireland. My husband and I visited Ardmore, a lovely village in the heart of Saint Declan country on the south Irish coast. It's rich with history, ancient ruins, gorgeous scenery. I ended up creating my little fictional village of Declan's Cross in this same area. Our visit didn't involve anything more challenging than long hikes and too much great food, but in Declan's Cross, we have a couple of intense FBI agents (Emma and Colin) on vacation, a ten-year-old unsolved Irish art theft and a missing American diver. And Julianne Maroney, a marine biologist and ex-flame of Colin's brother Andy. Look up "intrepid" and you'll see a picture of Julianne!

OMN: How did you decide on a title for the book?

CN: The title, Declan's Cross, arose out of the setting and the story. It's set in a fictional Irish village of the same name, and one of the items stolen in a famous art theft at the heart of the story is a Celtic cross. My gut told me it was the right title for the book, but just in case, I sent it to my editor along with three or four alternative titles. I didn't tell her which was my favorite. She immediately latched onto Declan's Cross. I don't know what I'd have done if she'd picked a different title (I don't remember what the others were, which says something, doesn't it?). Not all titles come about this way, but it was a lot of fun. I love the cover art. I sent my editor photos I'd taken in Ardmore, and Harlequin MIRA's amazing art team got busy. Did you check out the Celtic-inspired endpapers in the print hardcover edition? Gorgeous!

OMN: We did, and they're beautiful. You mentioned visiting Ireland and using that trip as an inspiration for the setting of the book. What other kinds of research did you do? Anything particularly challenging?

CN: My favorite way to fact-check and do research is to talk to experts in the areas I need to know about. For Declan's Cross, an Irish friend was an incredible, one-of-a-kind resource for all things Irish. He even helped with my sheep research. I'd never heard of "liver fluke" until I wrote Declan's Cross, and I'd be fine if I never hear of it again, thank you very much! Seriously, though, I love to do research and learn new things. Most challenging for me is recognizing the things I think I know but don't actually know as well as I thought. Most exciting … researching settings like Ireland and Maine!

OMN: Ireland … Maine … are there any other regions that come into play?

CN: I've always lived in the northeast, but my father was Dutch, my mother is from a small county in the Florida Panhandle and my husband is from middle Tennessee. I've moved a number of times (okay, more than a dozen!), and I love to travel and meet new people. I think this varied background helps me to see settings from different viewpoints, with an eye to detail.

OMN: What's next for you?

CN: I'm looking forward to a quiet fall and winter of writing by the woodstove on our hilltop in Vermont! With trips to visit family, especially our kids in Boston. It's been a busy year so far, and it's time to stay home, make soup, read, write, hike and cross-country ski. I'm deep into Harbor Island, my next adventure with Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan.

A Sharpe & Donovan Novel

An escape to an idyllic Irish seaside village is about to turn deadly …

For marine biologist Julianne Maroney, two weeks in tiny Declan's Cross on the south Irish coast is a chance to heal her broken heart. She doesn't expect to attract the attention of FBI agents Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan — especially since a Donovan is the reason for her broken heart.

Emma and Colin are in Ireland for their own personal retreat. Colin knows he's a reminder of everything Julianne wants to escape, but something about her trip raises his suspicion. Emma, an art crimes expert, is also on edge. Of all the Irish villages Julianne could choose … why Declan's Cross?

Ten years ago, a thief slipped into a mansion in Declan's Cross. Emma's grandfather, a renowned art detective, investigated, but the art stolen that night has never been recovered and the elusive thief never caught.

From the moment Julianne sets foot on Irish soil, everything goes wrong. The well-connected American diver who invited her to Ireland has disappeared. And now Emma and Colin are in Declan's Cross asking questions.

As a dark conspiracy unfolds amid the breathtaking scenery of Declan's Cross, the race is on to stop a ruthless killer … and the stakes have never been more personal for Emma and Colin.

A Carrie Carlin Mystery
Publisher: Nancy Tesler

Who would expect a killer to do in his/her victim while riding a chairlift at a peaceful alpine ski resort in full view of a throng of skiers gathered to watch the Christmas torchlight parade? Certainly not stress-reduction therapist, Carrie Carlin, who has come to her biofeedback convention in the hope of meeting this year's honoree, pain management guru, Adonis-like Dr. Hubert Freundlich. Of course, Carrie hadn't expected to find Dr. Freundlich's wedding-banded hand creeping up her thigh in the outdoor hot tub either. Nor had she anticipated hearing hints of wrongdoing drunkenly whispered in her ear by his brilliant young associate.

Then the associate is murdered, the police discover that her scarf is the probable murder weapon, her roommate develops amnesia about a possible date rape, a close colleague and friend is attacked, there's a suspicious accident on those slippery slopes, and her significant other starts talking wedded bliss. Carrie's stress level shoots into the stratosphere as she finds herself dodging not only Cupid's darts, but bullets and a ski-masked killer with a heart as cold as Vermont black ice.

The play, written by her friend Peter, is based on real events in his family, disturbing and mysterious, which took place in the village during the last war. As the investigation into the murder begins to uncover a tangled web of relationships in the village, it seems that the events dramatised in the play still cast a long shadow, dark enough to inspire murder.

Libby's natural nosiness soon leads her into the thick of the investigation, but is she too close to Peter s family, and in particular his cousin Ben, to be able to recognise the murderer?

Janet's childhood friend and high school crush, who was in the park with her that day, has returned to Dove Point, where he is wrestling with his own conflicted memories of the events. And a strange man appears at Janet's door in the middle of the night, claiming to know the truth.

Alan Glynn's Graveland Optioned for Film

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

New Regency has optioned Alan Glynn's most recent thriller Graveland for film. Brian Koppelman (Runner Runner, Ocean's Thirteen, Runaway Jury) will write the adapted screenplay for David Levien to direct.

We reviewed Graveland earlier this year, calling it "a solidly written novel with strongly developed characters" but adding that "there's a sense that there might be too much going on here for one book". With some deliberate and creative editing on the part of the screenwriter, we think this would make for a compelling murder mystery thriller film.

More about the book, below.

On a bright Saturday morning, a Wall Street investment banker is shot dead while jogging in Central Park. Hours later, one of New York City's savviest hedge-fund managers is gunned down outside a restaurant. Are these killings a coordinated terrorist attack, or just a coincidence?

Investigative journalist Ellen Dorsey has a hunch they're neither, and when an attempt is made on the life of another CEO, her theory is confirmed. The story blows wide open, and as Ellen races to stay ahead of the curve, her path collides with that of a recession-hit architect, Frank Bishop, whose daughter's disappearance may be tied to the murders.
