First, Kill All the Lawyers by Patricia M. Clark

First, Kill All the Lawyers
Patricia M. Clark
The Cleary Case Files
Publisher: Patricia Clark

It's true what Shakespeare wrote about killing lawyers being a good start. At least that's what Sgt. Edward Pulaski secretly believes when attorneys start popping up dead all over Washington, D.C. If reporters could be next on the hit list all his dreams would be fulfilled. An obscure poison, no suspects, and no forensic evidence hinder the investigation until a federal judge is the target and Pulaski's friend, FBI agent Shawn Cleary, joins the task force.

Shawn, fresh from a shootout that may leave her partner a quadriplegic, throws herself into the investigation to assuage her guilt and stop the horrible flashbacks of the event. As the body count rises and crosses state lines, lawyers from across the country begin to panic and demand action. Patterns emerge as pieces of the puzzle begin to come together.

The breakneck pace accelerates until Sgt. Pulaski reluctantly realizes all the clues lead to Shawn Cleary as the main suspect. She does nothing to dampen his suspicions when she flees instead of turning herself in. Worlds collide when powerful people in Washington seem more interested in a shoot to kill order than capturing Shawn alive. Pulaski is torn when Shawn calls him professing her innocence.

Working both inside and outside the system, Pulaski and Shawn continue to connect all the dots until the killer's next move becomes obvious. Aware her life hangs in the balance, Shawn tells Pulaski she is determined to save someone she loves and capture the killer before he gets away. Pulaski must choose between trusting a friend and doing what his bosses want. As Shawn races to the historic theater where the climax awaits, she prays she can make it in time while Pulaski wonders if he made the right choice.

Twenty-eight-year-old Tomi Reyes is a documentary filmmaker who moonlights as a receptionist to pay the bills. It’s a pretty easy gig—until she receives an unexpected promotion, and her somewhat interesting life goes totally insane.

For starters, her new boss, Scott Martin, morphs from nice guy into creepy dictator in the space of, like, five seconds. Then Justin Thyme, Tomi’s occasional boyfriend, is found murdered and stuffed inside his refrigerator. Before Tomi can get over the shock, her friend Whim meets the same gruesome fate. Tomi has a sneaking suspicion that new-boss-Scott has a hand in all of this, but the evidence to both of the murders is pointing to her! She is wondering how she'll look in an orange jumper, when her childhood pal is assigned to the case. Nicholas "Nickels" Turino, is now an FBI agent, and a hot one at that. When the killer starts stalking Tomi—going as far as turning her fridge into her waiting tomb—the not-so-swift hand of justice drives Tomi to act. She sets out to unmask the killer herself or die trying. Seriously underdressed for such a cold-blooded death, Tomi is determined to live.

Midsomer Murders Set 20 on DVDMidsomer Murders Set 20 on Blu-ray Disc

This DVD (and Blu-ray disc) set will probably best be remembered as the set of episodes that mark the end of the career of DCI Tom Barnaby (John Nettles). He first played the character in 1997, based on one created by crime novelist Caroline Graham, who featured the police detective in a series of mysteries set in fictional Midsomer County. The four episodes in Set 20 are typical of the series, ranging from the good to very good to the really quite good. It's a rare episode, indeed, that fails to satisfy.
