MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Books Priced $2.99 or Less (120616)

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

The number of new titles added this week is unusually large, so here's a quick overview …

• We found two mysteries each from Kensington and Midnight Ink to add. It's hard to go wrong with any book published by these companies.

Poisoned Pen Press recently announced that it had lowered the price of mysteries in several of its series, even going so far as to offer the first in these series for free! This new promotion seems to have replaced its previous 99 cent title offering, but many of those books haven't yet been repriced so it's definitely worth taking a look.

Oceanview Publishing lowered the price of many of its titles this past week, most to $1.99. Though we added a bunch of titles to our list, no doubt we missed a handful. Check out the complete selection using this link.

Tyrus Books also lowered the price for a large selection of books to $1.99, including series books by D. C. Brod, Reed Farrel Coleman, Victoria Houston, Mary Logue, and Randall Peffer. We've included many of them here, but there's bound to be a few we overlooked. Use this link to see what's currently available.

Shown below are some of the new titles we added today; click on the cover or title to purchase the Kindle edition.

Important Note: Prices can and do change without prior notice! We strongly urge you to confirm the price of the book before completing your purchase. The price displayed on the vendor website at the time of purchase is the price of the book.

Dead Tease by Victoria Houston

Dead Tease by Victoria Houston
A Paul "Doc" Osborne, Loon Lake Mystery
Publisher: Tyrus Books

This is the 12th, and most recent (March 2012), mystery in this series featuring the fly fisherman.

About Dead Tease (from the publisher): A hot August afternoon and Midwest Clinic CEO John McNeil has been working late. Working on his latest conquest, that is. Jen Williams is twenty-six, in charge of graphics for the hospital's PR division—and quite attractive in a healthy, athletic kind of way. She is quick to laugh and a little too quick to fall for guys. She is no virgin. And she is one of three women — including his wife — intimately familiar with McNeil.

When Jen's youthful body is found with a single stab wound through the heart, suspicion falls on both McNeil's wife, who insists she is being stalked, and the striking hospital physician with whom he had just ended an affair. Pressure to find the killer falls on Loon Lake Police Chief Lewellyn "Lew" Ferris and Dr. Paul "Doc" Osborne, the retired dentist and forensic dental expert whom she has deputized to help with the investigation—when they are not taking a break for fishing and other personal pursuits. When the mayor demands Lew take early retirement — and Doc has to babysit his teenage granddaughter who won't stop texting — the frustrations mount.

Desperate for a few hours off—and persuaded by Ray Pradt (a fishing guide who wears a stuffed trout on his head, so they should have known better)—to try fly fishing from kayaks, Doc and Lew find themselves in life-and-death straits on the river. This leads to an unexpected and macabre discovery that just may break the case.

Blood on the Tongue by Stephen Booth

Blood on the Tongue by Stephen Booth
A Ben Cooper and Diane Fry Mystery
Publisher: Westlea Books

This is the third mystery to feature the Derbyshire county detectives.

About Blood on the Tongue (from the publisher): It wasn't the easiest way to commit suicide. Marie Tennent seems to have curled up in the freezing snow on Irontongue Hill and stayed there until her body was frosted over like a supermarket chicken. And hers isn't the only death the Derbyshire police have to contend with — not after the discovery of a baby in the wreckage of an old Airforce bomber, and the body of a man dumped by the roadside.

As if three bodies on her hands isn't enough, snow and ice have left half of "E" Division out of action, and Detective Sergeant Diane Fry is forced to partner with DC Gavin Murfin. She and Ben Cooper were never a match made in heaven — but, next to Murfin, working with Ben starts to look like a dream. Cooper is on a trail of his own, though — and one as cold as the Peak District January.

In an equally bitter winter in 1945 an RAF bomber crashed on Irontongue Hill, killing everyone except the pilot, who walked away and disappeared. Now the pilot's grand-daughter is in Derbyshire desperate to clear his name, and Ben can't help taking an interest.

But is a fifty-year-old mystery really the best use of police time? Or does a vicious attack in the dark Edendale back streets prove that the trail isn't quite so cold as he thought?

Could the past be the only clue to present violence as an icy winter looks set to get even chillier?

Getting Lucky by Bob Sanchez

Getting Lucky by Bob Sanchez
Publisher: iUniverse

About Getting Lucky (from the publisher): When beautiful Bonita Esquivez hires P.I. Clay Webster to find her husband, Lucky, Clay expects an easy missing-person case. But when Bonita bites a poisoned bonbon, more than a quick buck is at stake. Clay needs to establish exactly who Lucky is and determine if his client could be lying to him.

Fifty-five-year-old Clay Webster knows pain; he lost his thirty-year marriage, his son, Sean, and his twenty-eight-year police career. Trying to build a new life, his wit is his weapon, and humor is his first line of defense against life's assaults. His search for Lucky centers primarily on Lowell, Massachusetts, where he tries to save a drowning teenager in a canal and hires yet another teenager, Denton La Rock Junior, who has been making prank phone calls to his home. Clay looks for links between Lucky and A Touch of Love, the new porn shop in town.

Meanwhile, Senator Carleton Swinburne rails against the city's perceived moral decay, personified partly by ex-cops such as Clay Webster. Perhaps Chantal Ladoute, Clay's old friend the ex-nun, will be his moral gyroscope as he navigates an increasingly dangerous course.

New Trailer for the Fifth and Final Season of Damages

Damages (DirecTV, 2012)

"You want to end this once and for all? Now's your chance."

We admit we kind of lost track of Damages after it was canceled by FX Networks in 2010. We absolutely loved the show, more specifically Glenn Close as attorney Patricia Hewes, but we didn't have DirecTV — which picked up the series for its fourth, and now its fifth and final season — and quite frankly it simply disappeared from our radar.

Now, with the series coming to a close — the final season premieres on DirecTV next month — a 30-second trailer has been released, reminding us of how much we've missed. There's nothing in the trailer about the season's overall storyline, but we so much appreciate when a series is allowed to bring closure to all that has happened thus far, which we're assuming will be the case here.
