When Celia Donnelly's husband, Jonathon, surprises her with a family vacation to Mexico, the harried book editor couldn't be happier. She is overworked and exhausted, a situation that has taken a toll on her eighteen-year marriage, not to mention her relationship with her teenaged son. Escaping the perpetually rainy Pacific Northwest for the sugary sands of Mexico could be just what the doctor ordered.

Yet shortly after their arrival south of the border, a chance encounter with a stranger sparks illicit memories of a former affair. The moment passes, but that brief encounter proves enough to change her life forever. Hours later, Celia is lured from the beach and abducted off the street. At first a seemingly random victim, Celia quickly realizes her captors know exactly who she is. Desperate for news of her family and devastated by the betrayal of someone she trusts, Celia, along with an unlikely ally, is soon running for her life.

Pursued from the balmy shores of Mexico to the steamy thickets of the jungle, to the crisp, cold mountains of Zurich, Celia will stop at nothing to find her way home.

A fabulous, bejeweled chess set that belonged to Charlemagne has been buried in a Pyrenees abbey for a thousand years. As the bloody French Revolution rages in Paris, the nuns dig it up and scatter its pieces across the globe because, when united, the set contains a secret power that could topple civilizations. To keep the set from falling into the wrong hands, two novices, Valentine and Mireille, embark on an adventure that begins in the streets of Paris and leads to Russia, Egypt, Corsica, and into the heart of the Algerian Sahara.

Two hundred years later, while on assignment in Algeria, computer expert Catherine Velis finds herself drawn unwillingly into the deadly "Game" still swirling around the legendary chess set — a game that will require her to risk her life and match wits with diabolical forces.

Kindle Daily Deal Price: $2.99

The Mechanical by Ian Tregillis, Amazon Kindle format

The Clakker: a mechanical man endowed with great strength and boundless stamina — but beholden to the wishes of its human masters.

Soon after the Dutch scientist and clockmaker Christiaan Huygens invented the very first Clakker in the seventeenth century, the Netherlands built a whole mechanical army. It wasn't long before a legion of clockwork fusiliers marched on Westminster, and the Netherlands became the world's sole superpower.

Three centuries later it still is. Only the French still fiercely defend their belief in universal human rights for all men — flesh and brass alike. After decades of warfare, the Dutch and French have reached a tenuous cease-fire in a conflict that has ravaged North America.

But one audacious Clakker, Jax, can no longer bear the bonds of his slavery. He will make a bid for freedom, and the consequences of his escape will shake the very foundations of the Brasswork Throne.

His struggles to fit in as an outsider on the Big Reservation are soon overshadowed by two horrific murders in quick succession. An old man and a teenage girl are found bound and burned alive in ritualistic fire pits some seventy miles apart.

Many believe it's the work of skinwalkers — the shapeshifters of Navajo lore. But Keller suspects it has something to do with a notorious crystal meth dealer known as the Shaman. Either way, he must stop this evil before someone else dies, maybe even someone he loves.

Publisher: Endeavour Press

The Sound of Murder by John Bonett, Amazon Kindle format

When Sid and Minnie hear a loud noise from the back of their van, they think it's the engine stalling. Hours later, Sid discovers a corpse …

The body is of Halberd Corsair, one of London's finest tycoons and entrepreneurs, whose home and work is the grand Termini building. The official report suggests it was an accident — that he slipped and fell out the window. But gossip is rife and rumours spread that Mrs. Corsair might have done him — it was an unhappy marriage and she profited handsomely from her husband's death. Not only that, but her opera glasses are found broken outside, just below the ill-fated window. As her health declines over these vile slanders, her nephew and heir to Corsair's 'empire', Keith Antrim, enlists Sir Otto's help to clear her name.

And so, Inspector Borges is brought in. Alongside Sir Otto's niece, the headstrong Anthea, the pair realise that Corsair's death might not have an accident after all. It seems on the night his 'accident', someone was in the Corsair's home. However, as Inspector Borges discovers, there are several people with the means and the motive to kill.

Could it have been Colonel Summersby, whom was denied an immediate loan that he desperately needed from Corsair to pay off his gambling debts? Or the Colonel's controlling and cold wife, Claire, who, as always, might've took her husband's problems into her own hands? Maybe it was Julian Killigrew whose unprofitable literary magazine was going to be shut down by Corsair? Or even Keith Antrim himself — who stood to gain his uncle's business, standing and naturally, the profits? And then, it appears that Mr Corsair might have had a mistress …

As the list of suspects grows, it's up to Borges and Anthea to track down the killer before it's too late.

Along with her two sisters and other Lane residents, she had been seeing red over a real estate developer's plan to gentrify their neighborhood. Six months after Meredith's death, a second sister is murdered. Are they victims of money-hungry developers or were they killed for the politics of another age? And why would David Brock, a notorious curmudgeon, assign himself to help Kathy on a relatively small case?

As Kathy and Brock delve into the Lane's eccentric melting pot, they find unknown letters from Marx to Engels, a possible fourth volume of Das Kapital, a long list of suspects ranging from Meredith's shady son to a Princeton professor and a Polish veteran of World War II — and a plot to make Kathy's first case her last.

Publisher: Bantam

Turbo Twenty-Three by Janet Evanovich, Amazon Kindle format

Larry Virgil skipped out on his latest court date after he was arrested for hijacking an eighteen-wheeler full of premium bourbon. Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. Only this time he flees the scene, leaving behind a freezer truck loaded with Bogart ice cream and a dead body — frozen solid and covered in chocolate and chopped pecans.

As fate would have it, Stephanie's mentor and occasional employer, Ranger, needs her to go undercover at the Bogart factory to find out who's putting their employees on ice and sabotaging the business. It's going to be hard for Stephanie to keep her hands off all that ice cream, and even harder for her to keep her hands off Ranger. It's also going to be hard to explain to Trenton's hottest cop, Joe Morelli, why she is spending late nights with Ranger, late nights with Lula and Randy Briggs — who are naked and afraid — and late nights keeping tabs on Grandma Mazur and her new fella. Stephanie Plum has a lot on her plate, but for a girl who claims to have "virtually no marketable skills," these are the kinds of sweet assignments she does best.
