Devil May Care by Tony Evans, Amazon Kindle format

Two years have passed since the dramatic destruction of Count Dracula. And Jonathan Harker has settled down to a quiet life as a junior partner in a law firm. But his reputation is about to catch up with him. As word of his abilities spreads, clients are turning to him for help with problems which appear to have an involvement in the supernatural.

His first case takes him to Cornwall, where the Haywood family are worried about the imminent marriage of their daughter Flora to the elusive Sir Owen Velland. Flora had been engaged for two years to the amiable Doctor Goodwin, before suddenly breaking off the relationship in favour of Sir Owen. Yet Sir Owen had been recently widowed under very suspicious circumstances and rumours are circulating in the small Cornish town that his unnatural powers and abilities may have some involvement with devil worship.

Are these rumours just idle gossip? Or is there a dark truth behind what people are saying? Can Harker use his knowledge of unusual and the occult to befriend Sir Owen and discover his secrets? Or has he come up against an opponent even deadlier than Dracula himself?

Review: Only the Hunted Run by Neely Tucker

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Only the Hunted Run by Neely Tucker. A Neely Tucker Mystery.

Review summary: This is an interesting, though complicated plotted mystery. There is a solidly developed cast characters, most especially the lead, who must balance challenges in his professional life and his personal life, the latter adding a touch of humor to an otherwise grim story. A good, but at times difficult, novel of suspense. (Click here for text of full review.)

Publisher synopsis: In the doldrums of a broiling Washington summer, a madman goes on a shooting rampage in the Capitol building. Sully Carter is at the scene and witnesses the carnage firsthand and files the first and most detailed account of the massacre. The shooter, Terry Waters, is still on the loose and becomes obsessed with Sully, luring the reporter into the streets of D.C. during the manhunt. Not much is known about Waters when he is finally caught, except that he hails from the Indian reservations of Oklahoma. His rants in the courtroom quickly earn him a stay at Saint Elizabeth's mental hospital, and the paper sends Sully out west to find out what has led a man to such a horrific act of violence.

As Sully hits the road to see what he can dig up on Waters back in Oklahoma, he leaves his friend Alexis to watch over his nephew, Josh, who is visiting DC for the summer. Traversing central Oklahoma, Sully discovers that a shadow lurks behind the Waters family history and that the ghosts of the past have pursued the shooter for far longer than Sully could have known. When a local sheriff reveals the Waters' deep connection with Saint Elizabeth's, Sully realizes he must find a way to gain access to the asylum, no matter the consequences.
