When a teenager from a wealthy suburb outside of Oakland, CA is dumped at an inner city bus stop, homicide detective Matt Sinclair catches the case. It's his first since being bumped to desk duty for a bust that went south … fast. With few leads and plenty of attention, it's the worst kind of case to help him get back up to speed.

And it only gets worse as the bodies start to pile up — first at the same bus bench, then around the city. Sinclair is unable to link the victims to each other, and the killer is just getting started. Time is running out on Sinclair's career, not to mention the people closest to him.

Review: The Hemingway Thief by Shaun Harris

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The Hemingway Thief by Shaun Harris. A Coop Cooper and Grady Doyle Mystery.

Review summary: This is a terrific mystery with lots of laughs. In addition to the two lead characters, there are quite a few others to deal with, some for only a short period of time as they come on stage to advance the story and then move off, but all are entertaining. This fast moving, really quite delightful read is highly recommended. (Click here for text of full review.)

Seventh Street Books (July 2016)

Available from Amazon.comAvailable from Barnes & NobleAvailable from iTunesAvailable from Kobo

Publisher synopsis: Novelist Henry "Coop" Cooper is contemplating a new book between sipping rum and lounging on a Baja beach with hotel owner Grady Doyle. When Grady tries to save a drunk from two thugs, Coop tags along for the sake of a good story. The drunk is Ebbie Milch, a small-time thief on the run in Mexico because he has stolen the never-before-seen first draft of Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast from a wealthy rare book dealer.

The stolen manuscript is more than just a rare piece of literary history. It reveals clues to an even bigger prize: the location of a suitcase the young, unpublished Hemingway lost in Paris in 1922. A year's worth of his stories had vanished, never to be seen again. Until now.

But Coop and Grady aren't the only ones with their eyes on this elusive literary prize, and what starts as a hunt for a legendary writer's lost works becomes a deadly adventure. For Coop this story could become the book of a lifetime … if he lives long enough to write it.

New York City taxidermy collector Garth Carson was seconds away from snagging the greatest find of his career — the original Pipsqueak the Nutty Nut, stuffed-squirrel puppet star of his favorite 1950s kiddie TV show — until a biker, a brawny redhead, and a murder derailed his dreams and stole his squirrel. Now Garth would do anything to get Pipsqueak back. Unfortunately, so would someone else.

When Garth and his gal, Angie, two of New York's most unlikely sleuths, enter a wacky, rollicking underworld of club-goers, jive cult members, and at least one very violent Pipsqueak aficionado, Garth's black-sheep crime-prone brother joins the fray, sure that there's more to this squirrel than old fur and a pair of glass eyes. Suddenly Garth is starting to get a clue: The puppet star of one old-time TV show is leading him straight into the heart of a loopy cult, a retro rage, and a diabolical conspiracy to first control Pipsqueak — then the world.

Adam's Rib by Antonio Manzini, A Rocco Schiavone Mystery (2nd in series)

Publisher: Harper

Adam's Rib by Antonio Manzini, Amazon Kindle format

Six months after being exiled from his beloved Rome, Deputy Police Chief Rocco Schiavone has settled into a routine in the cold, quiet, chronically backward alpine town of Aosta: an espresso at home, breakfast in the piazza, and a morning joint in his office.

A little self-medication helps Rocco deal with the morons that almost exclusively comprise the local force. Especially on a day like today. It's his girlfriend's birthday (if you could call her that; in his mind, Rocco's only faithful to his late wife), he has no gift — and he's about to stumble upon a corpse.

It begins when a maid reports a burglary in Aosta. But there's no sign of forced entry, and after Rocco picks the lock, he notices something off about the carefully ransacked rooms. That's when he finds the body: a woman, the maid's employer, left hanging after a grisly suicide. Or is it? Rocco's intuition tells him the scene has been staged. In other words, it's murder — a pain in the ass of the highest order.
