Getting into serious trouble with the wrong people, deputy prefect of police Rocco Schiavone is exiled to Aosta, a small, touristy alpine town far from his beloved Rome. The sophisticated and crotchety Roman despises mountains, snow, and the provincial locals as much as he disdains his superiors and their petty rules. But he loves solving crimes.

When a mangled body has been discovered on a ski run above Champoluc, Rocco immediately faces his first challenge — identifying the victim, a complex procedure complicated by his ignorance of the customs, dialect, and history of his new home. Proud and undaunted, Rocco makes his way among the ski runs, mountain huts, and aerial tramways, meeting ski instructors, Alpine guides, the hardworking, enigmatic folk of Aosta, and a few beautiful locals eager to give him a warm welcome.

It won't be easy, this mountain life, especially with a corpse or two in the mix. But then there's nothing that makes Rocco feel more at home than an investigation.

This is a new ebook edition of a mystery first published in trade paperback by Midnight Ink in 2008.

Following an ugly divorce and the death of her father, Emily Kincaid decides what she needs most is peace and quiet and time to think, so the part-time journalist and full-time struggling mystery writer relocates to a remote house in the woods of northern Michigan. When a severed head shows up in her garbage can, Emily knows she's been singled out, and suddenly her peaceful solitude feels a lot like isolation and vulnerability.

Discovering that the victim was a member of the Women of the Moon, a group of older local ladies who sing and dance around a bonfire in the woods late at night, Emily's at a loss to know why anyone would want to hurt one of them. The women claim it's a harmless act in praise of Mother Earth, a way to feel young again, but certain townspeople don't see it that way. As Emily digs deeper, more of the women are turning up dead.

Knowing she'll have to root out a killer to save her peaceful paradise, Emily teams up with the cantankerous Deputy Dolly and begins navigating between eccentric town gossips and reclusive neighbors who would rather be left alone. When the killer gets too close for comfort, Emily knows she'll have to put aside her fears before the natural life she's chosen comes to a grisly and very unnatural end.

Danny Lynch didn't sign up for this, but right now, it's all he's got. Three weeks ago, he was working at a chow hall in Afghanistan and — more or less — doing fine. Sure, this meant living in a war zone, but he was never in the line of fire and, frankly, the money was hard to resist. Then Danny saw something he shouldn't have, and now he's back in New York City, haunted by what sent him home and lucky to be employed at all, even if that means dicing carrots for ten hours a day in a stuffy Midtown restaurant. The job's one saving grace? A sight line from his prep station in the kitchen to a coveted corner table in the main room. For Danny, this is a window into the lives of some of Barcadero's flashy clientele — and one evening, he sees a man who looks exactly like him.

Teddy Trager is the visionary founder of the billion-dollar investment firm Paradime Capital. He has everything Danny never knew he wanted — cashmere suits, a sleek sports car … privilege, power — and the closer Danny looks at Trager the more fixated he becomes.

The answer, it turns out, is just about everyone who happens to be staying in the house. Nestor, while quietly stirring his sauces and whisking his egg whites, had decided to publish a compendium of gastronomic secrets that revealed, along with the culinary tricks of his trade, more than a few damning details of the hosts' and houseguests' private lives. To what lengths would they go to ensure that Nestor maintained a more permanent sense of discretion?

Please Welcome Mystery Author Lisa Alber

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Lisa Alber

We are delighted to welcome author Lisa Alber to Omnimystery News.

Lisa's second mystery in her County Clare series is Whispers in the Mist (Midnight Ink; August 2016 trade paperback and ebook formats) and today she revisits one of the inspirations for the book.

One of the best things about writing novels set in Ireland is the research travel. I've been to Ireland four times: 2002, 2004, 2006, and this past spring, 2016. (A full decade later! I still can't believe that, but, on the other hand, it's a testament to how long it can take to get books published in this biz.)

Whenever I go to Ireland I make myself a regular at a couple of pubs. For research purposes, of course. I'm forever eavesdropping on the locals and writing down funny turns of phrase. And one of the greatest things about the advent of smartphones is that I can take pictures in a low-key way. No one seems to mind when you aim a smartphone at them; they barely notice.

So this last time, I was keen to go back to Lynch's, one of the inspirations for Whispers in the Mist, my second novel in the County Clare mystery series. It was a cozy kind of bar that catered to both locals and tourists, with a fireplace, hunting prints on the wall, and a long, shiny bar counter.

Lisa Alber

I didn't mean for Lynch's to become an inspiration. I hung out there in 2006, long before Whispers was a spark of imagination. A few years later, writing the first draft of what would eventually become the novel, I found myself creating a mini-world within my fictional world: a pub called "The Plough and Trough." It bore a remarkable resemblance to the Lynch's I remembered.

I hadn't realized how much I'd absorbed pub life until I started writing the first draft, and then — whoa — I had a crew of regulars who called themselves "the crows," a half-French bar owner named Alan, and even a shop dog named Bijou. This little world ended up being critical to the unfolding murder investigation of a teenage boy.

Two mysterious strangers arrive in town — they go to the Plough. DS Danny Ahern, my detective, wants a pint, he hangs out at the Plough. An unlikely hero and villain in plain view all hang out at the Plough. A romance begins there. Old friends fight there. My other protagonist, Merrit Chase, ex-Californian, gets dissed by the locals there.

Lisa Alber

The pathos of human life — grief, anger, happiness — in one place. I suppose this is the big thing I absorbed while hanging around pubs. Perhaps it's particularly Irish that their pubs are so central to village life, I don't know, but I do know pub life made for a great centerpiece motif for the story, and so when I returned to Ireland for more research in March/April, I couldn't wait to refresh my memory banks at Lynch's.

I learned a little lesson about time marching on. It does and it did. Lynch's sat dark and deserted on the plaza, a gathering place no more. There's nothing like reality slamming into memory to bum a person out!

Yet, it's a funny thing about memories — they continue on vivid and bright, lending themselves to my fictional world.

A Tom Dugan Novel

Publisher: R. E. McDermott

Kindle Daily Deal Price: $1.99

Deadly Coast by R. E. McDermott, Amazon Kindle format

Tom Dugan's day started out pretty well, until he had to deal with a hijacked ship, murderous Somali pirates, and a fortune in sunken treasure (sitting on top of a long-lost and unstable bio-weapon), all before lunch. Then things got really difficult.

As Tom Dugan and Alex Kairouz, his partner and best friend, struggle to ransom their ship and crew from murderous Somali pirates, things take a turn for the worse. A US Navy contracted tanker with a full load of jet fuel is also hijacked, not by garden variety pirates, but by terrorists with links to Al Qaeda, changing the playing field completely.

With a possible link between piracy and terrorism now in play, the US and British governments order the halt of all negotiations for captive ships, and enraged pirates ratchet up the mistreatment of the captive crews. When one of their crewman is murdered in front of him on a live video feed, a frustrated Dugan takes matters into his own hands and starts his own rescue operation, only to stumble across something far more sinister — a rogue salvage operation for a long lost weapon of mass destruction. Isolated at sea on an old tanker previously destined for the ship breakers, Dugan and his hastily assembled little force of Russian mercenaries find themselves the last line of defense between the world and a terrifying bio-weapon.

In Marbella, Spain, Dr. Kate Warner awakens to a horrifying reality: the human race stands on the brink of extinction. A pandemic unlike any before it has swept the globe. Nearly a billion people are dead — and those the Atlantis Plague doesn't kill, it transforms at the genetic level. A few rapidly evolve. The remainder devolve.

As the world slips into chaos, radical solutions emerge. Industrialized nations offer a miracle drug, Orchid, which they mass produce and distribute to refugee camps around the world. But Orchid is merely a way to buy time. It treats the symptoms of the plague but never cures the disease.

Immari International offers a different approach: do nothing. Let the plague run its course. The Immari envision a world populated by the genetically superior survivors — a new human race, ready to fulfill its destiny.

With control of the world population hanging in the balance, the Orchid Alliance and the Immari descend into open warfare. Now humanity's last hope is to find a cure, and Kate alone holds the key to unraveling the mystery surrounding the Atlantis Plague. The answer may lie in understanding pivotal events in human history — events when the human genome mysteriously changed. Kate's journey takes her across the barren wastelands of Europe and northern Africa, but it's her research into the past that takes her where she never expected to go. She soon discovers that the history of human evolution is not what it seems — and setting it right may require a sacrifice she never imagined.
