It's summer in Sweden. As the coastal city of Gothenburg suffers through a heat wave, Chief Inspector Erik Winter broods over a series of unsolved rape-murders. The crimes bear an eerie resemblance to a five-year-old case that the mercurial detective has refused to let go cold.

Has the same rapist reemerged to taunt him, or is a copycat at work? And can Winter find a common thread among the victims before there are more of them?

Things are not going well for Inspector Salvo Montalbano. His relationship with Livia is once again on the rocks and — acutely aware of his age — he is beginning to grow weary of the endless violence he encounters. Then a young woman is found dead, her face half shot off and only a tattoo of a sphinx moth giving any hint of her identity.

The tattoo links her to three similarly marked girls — all victims of the underworld sex trade — who have been rescued from the Mafia night-club circuit by a prominent Catholic charity. The problem is, Montalbano's inquiries elicit an outcry from the Church and the three other girls are all missing.

Sometimes reality can really get in the way of a good story …

Joe Middleton's story is this: He doesn't remember killing anyone, so there' s no way a jury can convict him of serial murder. He calls himself Joe Victim, trying, as he awaits trial, to convince the psychiatrists that he wasn't in control of his actions, trusting that the system will save him in the end.

But others know Joe as the infamous Christchurch Carver and they want to see him dead. There's Melissa, Joe's accomplice in one of the murders, who plans on shooting him on his way to the courthouse before he gets a chance to start talking. Then there's Raphael, whose daughter was one of the Carver's victims. Though he's tried to move on with life as the leader of a counseling group for grieving family members, he'd like nothing more than to watch Joe pay. Finally there's Carl Schroder, the ex-detective who locked Joe up and is determined to put things right for the case of his career.

To extract himself from this epic mess, Joe has come up with a desperate plan involving a television psychic who's looking to get rich by making people believe just about anything. It's a long shot, but it had better work before he becomes the poster boy for a death penalty that may be reinstated in New Zealand, which isn't quite the dramatic ending he is hoping for …

This is a new ebook edition of a book published in hardcover by Simon & Schuster in 1995.

San Francisco litigator Laura Di Palma's new a solo practice is collapsing around her, thanks to her detested former boss. He's been slandering her to potential clients and scaring off those she already has. On the brink of ruin, she decides to sue him. But when she consults a labor lawyer, a masked man with a gun bursts into the meeting. A lucky accident keeps Laura from catching a bullet, but the other lawyer is not so lucky. As she lays dying, she whispers to Laura, "Designer crimes."

With the help of her private investigator and former lover, Laura learns that the labor firm's other partner may be sabotaging her clients' employers. Each crime seems specifically designed to ruin a bad employer in a way that highlights the employee-client's grievance. Did this secret sideline business lead to the gunman's attack? Or was the bullet meant for Laura?

This question makes Laura take a hard look at her one remaining case. An old friend in her home town is accused of murdering his girlfriend, who packed up and disappeared … except for a bucket filled with her blood. Unfortunately for Laura's client, the bucket is from his fishing boat. Laura's defense forces her to impugn the district attorney, a strategy that erupts into a public feud.

When Laura is almost killed again, it becomes a matter of life or death to discover whose enemies are out to get her — her own, her client's, or the dead labor lawyer's.

Mystery Book News: Lee Child To Write Three More Jack Reacher Thrillers

Night School (Lee Child)

"Initially I was planning on twenty-one [Jack Reacher books]", Lee Child has said. "I wanted to match but, as a matter of respect, not exceed John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee novels. He did twenty-one. That's one of the best series we have. So I feel I should do twenty-one Reacher novels and stop."

And so many thought that the 21st Jack Reacher book, Night School, scheduled to be published this coming November, would be the end of the series.

But now we're learning that more are coming.

"I changed my mind about stopping because of the readers, simple as that. They created the Reacher phenomenon in the first place, and they want more, so who am I to say no to them? And there are still plenty of stories to tell. I'm delighted that [publisher] Transworld agreed with me — I've been with them from the beginning, and they're like family to me. I'm really looking forward to the next few years."

Three new books are planned together with a short story collection and a novella, all featuring the popular Jack Reacher. The first of these is scheduled to be published in Fall 2017.

And for those who are waiting for the second film adaptation of the series, Never Go Back, with Tom Cruise reprising his role as Jack Reacher, hits theaters October 21, 2016.

With her mother in Europe, Deanna is staying with the Ballard family, who agree to chaperone her through the summer season and guide her toward an advantageous marriage proposal — or so her mother hopes. Relishing her new freedom, Deanna is more interested in buying one of the fashionable new bathing costumes, joining a ladies' bicycling club, and befriending an actress named Amabelle Deeks, all of which would scandalize her mother.

Far more scandalous is the discovery of a young man bludgeoned to death on the conservatory floor at Bonheur, the Ballards' sumptuous "cottage." Deanna recognizes him as an actor who performed at the birthday fete for a prominent judge the night before. But why was he at Bonheur? And where is Amabelle?

Concerned her new friend may be in danger — or worse — Deanna enlists the help of her intrepid maid, Elspeth, and her former beau, Joe Ballard, to find Amabelle before the villain of this drama demands an encore.
