When Maggie Riley sets sail for the Caribbean, all she wants is a little R&R before starting a work assignment in Dominica.

The last thing Maggie expects is to rescue Cole Thatcher, a sexy — but possibly nuts — conspiracy-spouting archaeologist found swimming nude off the island of Guadeloupe. It turns out Cole is searching for the wreckage of a vanished World War II submarine, claiming it holds millions in gold coins and classified documents from a powerful inner circle of the secret society Skull and Bones.

Maggie has enough skeletons to deal with. But when she learns her own past may intersect this inner circle of Bonesmen, she realizes Cole might not be so crazy after all — and joining him in the search for the sub may be her only course to uncover a hidden truth.

Jamie Brodie and Pete Ferguson are attending the lavishly over-the-top wedding of an acquaintance of Pete's when Jamie spots a ghost from his past in the string quartet — Scott Deering, the last guy he dated before Pete. The murder at the wedding is shocking, but it's not Jamie's business — until a theft from the music library at UCLA sucks him into the investigation. Victim. Lover. Both? His dark game is seducing her — just as it was when they were young. How can he still have that power over her? Eighteen years ago, she saw him die.

Wealthy, selfish, and greedy, the McDowell family raised Carolyn McDowell — a foster child — like a modern Cinderella. Neglected and ignored, good-hearted Carolyn adored scion Alexander despite it all, though even he tormented her. When Alex ran away one night, Carolyn followed and witnessed his murder, though she never told anyone. Her beloved Alex died when he was seventeen. There was no doubt.

Eighteen years later, Carolyn returns to the decadent milieu of the McDowell clan to care for her dying foster mother, Sally. As greedy relatives gather to claim their inheritances, a stunning stranger arrives, claiming to be Alexander. To Carolyn's utter shock, Sally greets her "son" without question, and no one but Carolyn believes he's a fraud. As she delves into the mysteries of both the past and present, Carolyn quickly realizes that the resurrected Alex is a dangerous combination of seduction and power. Is this stranger after the McDowell fortune, or is he really, somehow, the Alex of old, come back to claim her? How can he be an imposter and yet know family secrets only the real Alex would remember? Was someone helping him?

What would you do if the boy you loved returned almost twenty years later, and you fell in love with him all over again — even if you were sure it couldn't be him?

What should've been a simple meeting turns into an international conspiracy when it is revealed to Cameron that they've got little time to save a kidnapped girl from an old enemy. Cameron and Li face off against a deadly enemy from Jack Reacher's past. An enemy with a score to settle.

With murder, everyone pays a price …

Why would a killer ignore expensive jewellery and take a pair of turtledoves as the only bounty?

This is only one of the questions that piques Chief Inspector Domenic Jejeune's interest after a senior attaché with the Mexican Consulate is found murdered alongside the director of a local bird sanctuary. The fact that the director's death has opened up a full-time research position studying birds hasn't eluded Jejeune either. Could this be the escape from policing that the celebrated detective has been seeking? Even if it is, Jejeune knows he owes it to the victims to solve the case first. But a trail that weaves from embittered aviary owners to suspicious bird sculptors only seems to be leading him farther from the truth. Meanwhile, Jejeune is discovering that diplomatic co-operation and diplomatic pressure go hand in hand.

With two careers hanging in the balance, the stakes have never been higher for Inspector Jejeune. And this time, even bringing a killer to justice may not provide the closure he's looking for.

Now, one has caught up with him, with a bomb powerful enough to turn quiet Main Street into a smoking crater. Is this a cop killing — or domestic terrorism?

Back at the CIA, Ike's old colleague Charlie Garland joins the hunt, becoming fixated on a blurry videotape of the crime scene. Charlie's elastic job description includes monitoring Ike's life. Investigations led by more than one player fan around and out of Picketsville as far as a small town in Idaho where Martin Pangborn, head of the radical militia called the Fifty-First Star, runs his organization. Please Welcome Mystery Author Cindy Sample

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Cindy Sample

We are delighted to welcome author Cindy Sample to Omnimystery News today.

The latest mystery in Cindy's popular Laurel McKay series is Dying for a Donut (Cindy Sample; November 2015 trade paperback and ebook formats) and we asked her to give us the backstory to the book.

One would think that researching a book titled Dying for a Donut would be a piece of cake. But the fifth book in my Laurel McKay mystery series led to my most dangerous research yet!

Laurel McKay, my soccer mom protagonist, and I live near an area called Apple Hill, located fifty miles east of Sacramento in the middle of the California Gold Country. Pastoral farms and ranches dot the hills and valleys, set against a backdrop of the Sierra Mountain Range. During the fall season, which goes from Labor Day to Christmas Eve, over a million tourists bring their families to this area to pick fresh apples off the plentiful trees.

At least, that's what they tell themselves. They really visit Apple Hill for the pastries. Over fifty apple farms offer delicious melt-in-your-mouth glazed apple and cinnamon donuts, turnovers so flaky your clothing becomes covered with evidence of your indulgence, and foot-high apple pies. Not to mention fifty shades of fudge and apples covered with gooey caramel, thick chocolate, nuts, or marshmallows. Or all of the above.

A day spent in Apple Hill supplies enough sugar-infused energy to plot an entire book. After touring the kitchen of one of the largest farms and learning that they sell over 50,000 donuts a month, my story came to life.

My protagonist is thrilled when her daughter lands a job in the bakery of Apple Tree Farm. But mother and daughter soon discover that life on the farm isn't as bucolic as one would think. Especially after Laurel stumbles over the body of farm owner Axel Thorson, AKA the Donut King, covered from head to toe in powdered sugar.

Who tried to sweeten him up?

Was it Axel's business partner? Family members? Competitive farm owners? Or maybe it was that deranged anti-powdered sugar advocate.

Despite Laurel's efforts to stay out of the investigation, she ends up discovering first-hand that sugar really can kill you.

And after my meticulous research, I discovered that writing a book titled Dying for a Donut better lead to a sixth book fast — Dying for a Diet!

To Laurel McKay, there is nothing better than spending an autumn afternoon munching on caramel apples and cinnamon donuts. It's a good thing her daughter Jenna has landed a seasonal job at Apple Tree Farm and Bakery. Then Laurel stumbles over the bakery owner coated in powdered sugar. Axel Thorson was a well-respected member of the community. Who wanted to sweeten him up?

When the police arrest the heartthrob grandson of the bakery manager, Jenna decides to help him by solving the case herself, a move that lands her in jail. With Laurel's detective honey in another state, and her octogenarian grandmother threatening to chase down the culprit, what's a soccer mom with a sweet tooth to do but go undercover.

Detecting among donuts should be a piece of cake, but not if Laurel discovers first-hand that sugar can kill you.
