A Hank Thompson Mystery (1st in series)

Publisher: Ballantine Books

Caught Stealing by Charlie Huston, Amazon Kindle format

It's three thousand miles from the green fields of glory, where Henry "call me Hank" Thompson once played California baseball, to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where the tenements are old, the rents are high, and the drunks are dirty. But now Hank is here, working as a bartender and taking care of a cat named Bud who is surely going to get him killed.

It begins when Hank's neighbor, Russ, has to leave town in a rush and hands over Bud in a carrier. But it isn't until two Russians in tracksuits drag Hank over the bar at the joint where he works and beat him to a pulp that he starts to get the idea: Someone wants something from him. He just doesn't know what it is, where it is, or how to make them understand he doesn't have it.

Within twenty-four hours Hank is running over rooftops, swinging his old aluminum bat for the sweet spot of a guy's head, playing hide and seek with the NYPD, riding the subway with a dead man at his side, and counting a whole lot of cash on a concrete floor.

All because of two cowboys, two Russian mafia men, and some of the weirdest goons ever assembled in one place. All because of Bud. All because once, in another life, in another world, the only thing Hank wanted was to take third base — without getting caught.

Jacob Weizman, a physician, and his wife, Lola, a psychotherapist, are holocaust survivors and need no proof of evil in this world. They're octogenarians who take the fear out of getting old. Their intelligence, competence, humor, and sense of history make them appealing in a world that too often disdains the aged. After fifty-five years practicing medicine, Jacob is disappointed, but not surprised by several patients' deaths, even the unexpected ones. Soon, however, it becomes clear that a killer is stalking the halls of Brier Hospital targeting Jacob's patients.

While Jacob has made enemies over the years, he finds it inconceivable that anyone would murder his patients for revenge. The killings mount even as the hospital and police increase security and pursue a vigorous investigation. Finally, unsatisfied with surrogates, the killer targets Jacob.

Deep in the hollows of Georgia's wild Appalachians, the ghost of a young girl can be seen in the moonlight. The spirit is forever doomed to wander the paths of Black Pine Mountain where she vanished more than fifty years ago. Now another little girl has gone missing, leaving nothing behind but a trail of collective guilt, unanswered questions and too many coincidences. It seems only a certain out-of-towner, a Zen private eye with a penchant for French wine, can unravel the truth …

Flap Tucker is back. And he doesn't believe in coincidences.

A man with a curious gift for finding missing things, Flap has travelled to the eerie little town of Lost Pines with his dear friend — the beautiful nightclub owner, Dalliance Oglethorpe. Together they pledge to find the missing girl before she spends another night in the fast thickening snow. However, in a town where the locals fervently guard their dark secrets and eye all outsiders with suspicion, Flap is met with hostility.

As he follows a twisted trail through the shadowy forests of the mountain, the town's haunted past and cold modern-day realities grow increasingly interlinked and its whispered legends become more real than ever. Only Flap and his special talents are the little girl's last hope against a ghost's final revenge.

Riot Most Uncouth by Daniel Friedman

Riot Most Uncouth by Daniel Friedman, a Lord Byron Mystery (1st in series)

Publisher: Minotaur Books

Riot Most Uncouth by Daniel Friedman, Amazon Kindle format

A young woman is murdered in a boarding house, and nobody knows what to do about it. The volunteer watchman who patrols the streets of this placid college town has no idea how to investigate a serious crime and the private bounty hunters the girl's family has hired to catch the killer employ methods that are questionable, at best.

What Cambridge needs is a hero, and, in a situation such as this, it's very easy for a gentleman with a romantic disposition to mistake himself for one.

19 year-old Lord Byron, the outlaw poet, is a student at Trinity College, though he can only be described as a "student" in the loosest sense of the word: He rarely attends class and, instead, spends his time day-drinking, making love to faculty wives, and feeding fine cuisine and expensive wine to the bear he keeps as a pet.

Catching a killer seems like a fine diversion, however, and Byron decides that solving the crime must take precedence over other, less-urgent matters such as his failing grades and mounting debts.

A Conversation with Suspense Novelist Jamie Cortland

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Jamie Cortland

We are delighted to welcome novelist Jamie Cortland to Omnimystery News today.

Jamie is the author of the suspense novel What Lies Within (World Castle Publishing; December 2014 ebook format) and we recently had the chance to catch up with her to talk more about her work.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: Tell us a little more about the lead characters of your books.

Jamie Cortland
Photo provided courtesy of
Jamie Cortland

Jamie Cortland: My female protagonists are strong, smart, independent women able to handle most any situation they encounter. I especially like difficult life or death situations.

I always try to develop my characters over time. In regard to a series, I prefer writing stand alone novels though I do write a few series. What Lies Within is the first of a two novel series. The Gardener's Secret is to follow. Danni will be my protagonist, Eddie, whom you haven't met yet, my villian. Dying to Dance, my new release, is the first in a series as well.

OMN: Have you considered writing a book from the perspective of a male lead?

JC: No. I haven't yet read a successful novel with the lead character being the opposite gender from the author though I suspect there are authors that can do that well.

OMN: In which genres have you written?

JC: I have written romance, sci-fi and non-fiction. Currently, I am writing suspense.

OMN: Give us a summary of What Lies Within in a tweet.

JC: Evelyn thought she had met the man of her dreams, but in reality she had met the hideous creature of her nightmares.

OMN: How much of your own personal or professional experience have you included in your books?

JC: Some; enough to draw from. My characters, if based upon someone I have known, are all fictionalized beyond recognition.

OMN: What is your writing process?

JC: I begin with a synopsis and allow it to expand. The story develops from there.

OMN: How do you go about researching the plot points of your stories? Any particularly challenging or interesting topics?

JC: Mostly by internet. My most challenging subject to research: The possibility of time travel. Most interesting: Old West lawmen and outlaws for Wyatt's Deck.

OMN: How true are you to the settings of your books?

JC: I definitely stay true to my settings, geography and environment. In fact, I generally write in that location even if I temporarily need to re-locate.

OMN: What advice might you offer to aspiring writers?

JC: Do your research well; write, write, and re-write; Choose your target market well!

OMN: Why did you choose to write under a pen name?

Dying To Dance by Jamie Cortland

JC: I use a pen name for different genres. For instance, I use my given name when writing poetry and romance; Jamie Cortland for suspense, and Wes Alistair for metaphysical subjects.

OMN: Tell us a little more about your book covers.

JC: A few of my covers I designed, others were done by a graphic designer that either I chose or was employed by the publisher. Dying to Dance was a surprise. I had sent my publisher a photo of myself and my dance partner-instructor dancing in an International Competition. The photo with a bit of embellishment became the cover.
