Publisher: Bantam

Price: $1.99 (as of 09/28/2015 at 8:00 PM ET).

White Corridor by Christopher Fowler, Amazon Kindle format

It's an "impossible" crime — a member of the Peculiar Crimes Unit killed inside a locked autopsy room populated only by the dead and to which only four PCU members had a key. And to make matters worse, the Unit has been shut down for a forced "vacation" and Bryant and May are stuck in a van miles away in the Dartmoor countryside during a freak snowstorm on their way to a convention of psychics.

Now, with Sergeant Janice Longbright in charge at headquarters, Bryant and May must crack the case by cell phone while trying to stop a second murder without freezing to death. For among the line of snowed-in vehicles, a killer is on the prowl, a beautiful woman is on the run from a man who seeks either redemption or another victim, and an innocent child is caught in the middle.

Review: Fool Me Once by Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Fool Me Once by Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco. An Alanis McLachlan, Tarot Mystery.

Review summary: This is, on balance, a generally entertaining novel, but one without much substance. Fortunately, the series lead is such a delightful character to follow around; if she were any less engaging this would be a poor excuse for a mystery as the plot is really thinly developed and not particularly well executed. When John is targeted for assassination in a parking garage at O'Hare Airport, he has no time to think. He responds automatically, twenty years of intense training activating muscle memory, and he takes weapons away from the twelve assassins and kills them all in a life-and-death shoot-out. John survives despite overwhelming odds, a debilitating shoulder wound, and surveillance by persons unknown who hacked into the Chicago Police Department's security camera network.

While John is recuperating from shoulder surgery at the company's private clinic, two additional teams of assassins destroy Sam Adams' company headquarters in an old factory building a block away from the clinic and then attack the clinic. Sam and 43 other company employees were in the building when it exploded. Sticks & Scones by Diane Mott Davidson, Amazon Kindle format

For Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz, accepting a series of bookings at Hyde Castle is like a dream come true. It's not every day that she gets to cook authentic Elizabethan fare — especially at a real castle that was brought over from England and reassembled stone by stone in Aspen Meadow. Goldy is determined that everything will go right — which is why, she figures later, everything went terribly wrong.

It begins when a shotgun blast shatters her window. Then Goldy discovers a body lying in a nearby creek. And when shots ring out for the second time that day, someone Goldy loves is in the line of fire. Suddenly the last thing Goldy wants to think about is Shakespeare's Steak Pie, 911 Chocolate Emergency Cookies, or Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart. Could one of her husband Tom's police investigations have triggered a murder? Or was her violent, recently paroled ex responsible?

With death peering around every corner, Goldy needs to cook up some crime-solving solutions — before the only dish that's left on her menu is murder.

He's become an avid Doomsday Prepper, raising his diabetic son, Andy, to be ready for any sudden catastrophe.

Andy, now a student at the prestigious Pepperell Academy where Jake works as a custodian, has a secret — he's part of a computer club that redistributes money from the obscenely wealthy to the needy. Usually, their targets don't even realize they've been hacked. But this time, they've stolen from the wrong people: a vicious drug cartel that is coming to get its money back …

Staging a chemical truck spill as a distraction, the cartel infiltrates the Academy, taking Andy and his friends hostage one by one. Jake, hidden inside the school's abandoned tunnels, knows that soon the killing will start. With his training, and a stockpile of weapons and supplies, he's the last, best hope these students — including his son — have of getting out alive. But survival is no longer an abstract concept. During the height of a harsh Vermont winter, the body of a woman is found hanging from the steel-mesh retaining net lining the cliffs along the interstate. She was brutally murdered, with the word "dyke" carved into her chest. She was also a state senator and best friend and ally of the current governor, Gail Zigman. At Zigman's personal request, Joe Gunther and his Vermont Bureau of Investigation team agree to help the Vermont State Police in their investigation before the victim's high profile and powerful friends create the inevitable publicity maelstrom.

Raffner was indeed a lesbian, and the word carved into her chest might be evidence of a hate crime, or it might be a feint designed to confuse and mislead investigators. But the question remains-what was she involved with, who wanted her dead, and what company was she keeping? What Gunther and his team discover during their initial investigation isn't the stuff of a simple murder. Someone killed a prominent figure and fabricated an elaborate scene for a purpose.

And this might only be the beginning …

Maine newspaper reporter Joe Gale is at his best when covering the crime beat for the Portland Daily Chronicle. In the dead of winter he heads Downeast to cover the murder trial of fisherman Danny Boothby, charged with burying a filleting knife in the chest of politically well-connected social worker Frank O'Rourke.

O'Rourke held a thankless job in a hard place. Many locals found him arrogant, but say he didn't deserve to die. Others whisper that O'Rourke got himself killed through his own rogue behavior.

After Joe's hard-nosed reporting provokes someone to run him off an isolated road, he realizes his life depends on figuring out not only who committed the murder, but who's stalking him — O'Rourke's prominent brother, friends or enemies of the dead social worker or members of Boothby's family. As he digs deeper, Joe uncovers enough secrets and lies to fill a cemetery. He'll have to solve this one fast … or his next headline may be his own obituary.
