Review: A Pattern of Lies by Charles Todd

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of A Pattern of Lies by Charles Todd. A Bess Crawford Mystery.

Review summary: This is a fine example of the books in this terrific historical series. The characters are richly drawn, the storyline is straight-forward but intricately thought out, well-developed and nicely paced. The journey that the series character takes to determine what actually happened two years ago is a rewarding one. (Click here for text of full review.)

The only known witness to the tragedy is now at the Front in France. Bess is asked to find him. When she does, he refuses to tell her anything that will help the Ashtons. Choker by Roger Silverwood, Amazon Kindle format

Detective Inspector Michael Angel is faced with the gruesome murder of Yvette Millhouse in the South Yorkshire town of Bromersley. The beautiful wife of Sir Charles Millhouse, the local MP, is found naked and choked to death in a reservoir. Her clothes and an antique pearl collar she usually wore are missing, as is a hearthrug which has strangely disappeared from their family home. The MP is apprehensive when questioned about the disappearance of his young French wife … and when the body is found his gruff son becomes equally defensive. There are now few staff in Sir Millhouse's mansion, a shadow of the estate it once was since his first wife also died. An eerie atmosphere pervades the sprawling, largely empty home and its vast surveillance system. Angel knows there are secrets to be uncovered and digs deeper to unveil the truth.

Meanwhile, another body is discovered and the modus operandi repeated. A strange and unidentified foreign visitor shows up unexpectedly. Can Angel persuade them to talk? The death toll threatens to rise and the Bromersley residents are in danger.

With little forensic evidence and no obvious motive or suspect can Michael Angel's guile be enough to reveal the identity of the choker?

A Cruise to Die For by Charlotte and Aaron Elkins, Amazon Kindle format

This should be the cushiest job Alix London's ever had …

Surrounded by art and wealth and the sun-drenched Greek isles, she's aboard a sumptuous mega-yacht with no responsibilities save the occasional lecture to the guests of her temporary employer, Panos Papadakis, one of the world's richest men. But there's a catch: Papadakis has long been suspected of being at the center of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme and Alix is actually there as an undercover operative of FBI special agent Ted Ellesworth, a member of the Bureau's Art Crime Team. They hope Alix can gather the inside information they need to finally put the cagey Papadakis away.

Alix's exposure to the enormous wealth of high-end collectors and the shadier aspects of the art trade — the avarice, naked greed, and ingenious scams — somehow brings her closer to her charming, "reformed" rogue of a father, and helps crystalize in her own mind just where she fits into the mix.

Moguls, murders, a forged Manet, and the Albanian mafia all play a role and send this pleasure cruise into brutally dangerous waters.

The Merlot Murders by Ellen Crosby, Amazon Kindle format

A phone call at two thirty in the morning is never good news. Lucie Montgomery's semiestranged brother, Eli, calls her in France to tell her their father, Leland, has been killed in a hunting accident on the family's five-hundred-acre Virginia vineyard just as the fall harvest is about to begin. By the time he calls, Eli has already made funeral arrangements with what Lucie argues is indecent haste.

It is an emotional trip home — the first since an automobile accident two years ago, which left Lucie disabled and dependent on a cane. Her family's once elegant home and winery are now shabby and run-down, thanks to her father's penchant for fringy business deals. Eli, also cash-strapped and desperate to support his new wife's extravagant lifestyle, has already convinced their rebellious younger sister, Mia, to sell the debt-ridden estate and reap the profits from the valuable land it sits on, overruling Lucie's protests.

On the eve of the funeral Lucie's godfather, Fitz, a partner in the family business, tells her Leland's death was no accident. Whoever killed him was motivated by the potential sale of the vineyard. It is the last conversation she will have with Fitz. Now the lone holdout preventing the vineyard sale, Lucie realizes she's next in line for another "accident." With her greedy brother, hell-raising sister, and a seemingly cut-rate vintner hired by Leland just before he died, all the suspects are disturbingly close to home. Unsure whom she can trust, Lucie must uncover the truth about the deaths of her father and godfather — and oversee a successful harvest to save the vineyard she loves.

Ciaran Devine, who made Belfast headlines seven years ago as the "schoolboy killer," is about to walk free. At the age of twelve, he confessed to the brutal murder of his foster father; his testimony mitigated the sentence of his older brother, Thomas, who was also found at the crime scene, covered in blood. But DCI Serena Flanagan, the only officer who could convince a young, frightened Ciaran to speak, has silently harbored doubts about his confession all this time.

Ciaran's release means several things: a long-anticipated reunion with Thomas, who still wields a dangerous influence over his younger brother; the call-to-action of a man bent on revenge for his father's death; and major trouble for Ciaran's assigned probation officer. Meanwhile, Serena Flanagan has just returned to the force from her battle with breast cancer, only to endure the pitying looks of her coworkers and a mountain of open case files. She will soon discover that even closed cases can unleash terror on the streets of Belfast.
