Finding shelter, Morgan stumbles onto a Sasquatch lookalike, and worse, human remains. It appears the body may be that of Carlee Kruger, who vanished fifteen years earlier. Carlee's mother, Gerda, an alcoholic auto mechanic, asks Morgan to investigate her daughter's death. Having experienced similar grief at the loss of her husband, Morgan knows Gerda may never recover unless she learns what happened to Carlee. Newspaper editor Kurt Willard offers to help. Then Morgan finds a rare fossil gemstone where she discovered Carlee's remains — their first solid clue. Word leaks out to the prospecting community, sparking a dangerous treasure hunt.

As Morgan and Kurt follow clues as convoluted as the coils on a fossilized ammonite, they suspect the person who knows what happened fifteen years ago will do anything to keep the truth buried.

Then, the murders begin. Murders that look suspiciously like those in Chris's books. Murders that escalate to a grisly stabbing that exactly mimicks a story no one has read except Chris, herself.

With MacNamara's help, Chris is forced to delve into the dark recesses of her past for answers. Is a madman stalking Chris? Or is Chris right to question her own sanity? Could she be committing the murders herself?

When a murder rocks the isolated community of Entry Island, insomniac homicide detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at St. Hubert airfield bound for the small, scattered chain of Madeline Islands, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, as part of an eight-officer investigation team from Montréal.

Only two kilometers wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of just more than 100 inhabitants, the wealthiest of whom has just been discovered murdered in his home. Covered in her husband's blood, the dead man's melancholy wife spins a tale for the police about a masked intruder armed with a knife.

The investigation appears to be little more than a formality — the evidence points to a crime of passion, implicating the wife. But Sime is electrified by the widow during his interview, convinced that he has met her before, even though this is clearly impossible.

Haunted by this strange certainty, Sime's insomnia is punctuated by vivid, hallucinatory dreams of a distant past on a Scottish island 3,000 miles away, dreams in which he and the widow play leading roles. Sime's conviction soon becomes an obsession. And despite mounting evidence of the woman's guilt, he finds himself convinced of her innocence, leading to a conflict between the professional duty he must fulfill and the personal destiny he is increasingly sure awaits him.

Dying to Live in Palm Beach by Jane Grossman, Amazon Kindle format

For a group of eight close-knit widows living in Palm Beach, life is for celebrating. Spending their time on lavish shopping trips, playing bridge, and exchanging witty barbs over glasses of wine about who might be looking for a new husband, these friends enjoy the good life. That is, until one of them takes the celebration a bit too far.

It all started innocently enough: picking up someone else's credit card by mistake, making a few charges, and hoping Bunny Boardman wouldn't notice. And then doing it again the next week, reasoning away any lingering moral concerns.

But when Bunny does notice, things turn grave fast. The police chalk up the ensuing deaths to natural causes, but the inimitable Flossy Kane suspects it's not that simple — and that they're all in danger. Oxygen tank in tow and with the help of her home health aide, Frances, Flossy is determined to prove the police wrong (and save her own life).

Review: Dante's Dilemma by Lynne Raimondo

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Dante's Dilemma by Lynne Raimondo. A Mark Angelotti Mystery.

Review summary: With plenty of twists and turns in a legal case that has the series character confused as to what the real motivation may have been behind what he believes is a suspicious murder and wrongful conviction, this is a crisply written, strongly plotted mystery with a gripping moral subplot that is well worth the read. Publisher synopsis: Blind psychiatrist Mark Angelotti is faced with his most troubling case yet when he is asked to evaluate Rachel Lazarus, the estranged wife of a slain University of Chicago professor.

Months earlier, the professor's body was found stuffed into one of the exhibits at "Scav," the school's world-famous annual scavenger hunt, and — in a feast for the press — missing a vital piece of its anatomy. Though she's confessed to her husband's murder, Rachel is mounting a battered woman's defense.

Forced into helping the prosecution, Mark becomes unsure of his objectivity when his investigation uncovers uncomfortable parallels between Rachel's history and his own. That concern proves well-founded when his damaging admission at trial all but convicts Rachel. Then a tip connects the case to another suspected murder and evidence that Rachel may not be guilty after all. As he plows ahead during a brutal Chicago winter, Mark soon learns he has far more to worry about than treacherous snow and ice: someone will do anything to guarantee that Rachel takes the fall.
