When Leslee Stanton "Nixy" Nix gets the latest call from Lilyvale detective Eric Shoar, she knows it means trouble. There's been another kitchen explosion at her Aunt Sherry's farmhouse, and the dreamy-voiced detective has had enough. If Nixy doesn't check on her aunt in person, the Silver Six could become wards of the court. But the trouble Nixy finds in Lilyvale is not at all what she expects.

The seniors are hosting a folk art festival at the farmhouse, featuring Sherry's hand-woven baskets, when land developer Jill Elsman arrives to bully Nixy's aunt into selling the property. When Jill is later found dead in the cemetery, Sherry is suspected of weaving a murder plot, and it's up to Nixy and the Silver Six to untangle the truth.

A Stephanie Plum Mystery (1st in series)

Publisher: Scribner

Kindle Daily Deal Price: $1.99

One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, Amazon Kindle format

Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey.

She's a product of the "burg," a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six.

Now Stephanie's all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad's, doing her best to sever the world's longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case.

Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, fearless bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook.

Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli is also the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie's virginity at age sixteen and then wrote the details on the bathroom wall of Mario's Sub Shop. There's still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase should be interesting.

It could also be extremely dangerous, especially when Stephanie encounters a heavyweight title contender who likes to play rough. Benito Ramirez is known for his brutality to women. At the very least, his obsession with Stephanie complicates her manhunt and brings terror and uncertainty into her life. At worst, it could lead to murder.

She's not evil, but she has certain … urges …

Lane is a typical teenager — loving family, good grades, after-school job at the local animal hospital, martial arts enthusiast — but her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick. Why? Because she might be one herself.

Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals — delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder. But with each visceral rush the line of self-control blurs.

And then a young preschool teacher goes missing — only to return in parts.

When Lane excitedly gets involved in the hunt for "the Decapitator", the vicious serial murderer that has come to her hometown, she gets dangerously caught up in a web of lies about her birth dad and her own dark past. And once the Decapitator contacts Lane directly, Lane knows she is no longer invisible or safe. Now she needs to use her unique talents to find the true killer's identity before she — or someone she loves — becomes the next victim.

Scouring the mountains of Arizona with Simon, her best friend and computer geek extraordinaire, Delia dreams of turning their scavenging enterprise into a legitimate business. More, she longs to earn the respect of peers who shun her for turning into a treasure hunter. What she doesn't dream of is stumbling across a decapitated body in an old mine near Prescott.

Something dangerous has come to the mountains, and two Harley-riding strangers are the only ones who seem to have a clue. They speak a language Delia has never heard and carry mysterious artifacts she's never seen. William Shakespeare, only 19 years old but already with a wife and child, leaves Stratford-upon-Avon to pursue a career in theatre in London. But on the journey he is robbed and kidnapped by a group of highwaymen, led by the aged, round-bellied womaniser John Falstaff. When Shakespeare wakes up in Oldcastle Hold, Oxfordshire, without his possessions — including his half-finished Comedy of Errors — the lord of the house Falstaff denies any wrongdoing. Shakespeare becomes a prisoner to Falstaff and is asked to write to write to his father for ransom before he can be released. However, Shakespeare becomes a favourite of the benign Falstaff, and is more concerned with turning down the unwanted advances of the buxom Mercy Roundy than fleeing the household.

But things take a darker turn when Shakespeare is asked to work as gardener to the house, and he discovers the rotting corpse of his predecessor who tried to make an escape. A group of actors come to Oldcastle Hold and Shakespeare makes his acting debut as a youth who murders his lover's father, played by Falstaff.

But life comes to imitate art in the middle of the play when Falstaff is discovered with his throat cut — by the very gardening tool Shakespeare was using. Framed by the murder and sentenced to hang, Shakespeare knows his only chance of survival is to escape the mad house …
