When a body of young girl is found raped and murdered in a wood in Kent, Detective Sergeant Rusk must interview the few men in the area with a history of sexual offences. Among them he finds Kremayne, a name he remembers from his school days. Back then, Kremayne had left little impression on him. Is it any wonder? Rusk was popular and athletic; Kremayne was awkward, an outcast.

Rusk can't help but feel a sting of jealousy when Kremayne turns out to be wealthy and happily married. The allegations against him, Kremayne insists, were brought on by an hysterical individual out to ruin him. Only when Rusk gets close to Kremayne's wife Anne, does he suspect that there is more to their cozy life than meets the eye. Beneath the surface, how happy is their marriage? How twisted is Kremayne? Or has Rusk compromised himself with Anne to the point that now the best result would be to find Kremayne guilty?

Fur Ball Fever by Maureen Fisher, Amazon Kindle format

After a lifetime of impetuous mistakes, Jersey Shore pet spa owner Grace Donnelly outdoes herself when a client's prize poodle, a shoo-in to win the annual Fur Ball, goes AWOL while in her custody. With money, careers, and lives in jeopardy, Grace is not afraid to strap on the leather to go undercover in a fetish club looking for clues. Too bad her helpers consist of an aging hippie aunt, a renegade schnauzer, a drag queen, and a dominatrix or two. Worst of all, the only man truly qualified to help is her former flame, the most domineering male on the eastern seaboard.

Texas-born security specialist Nick Jackson faces his worst nightmare when Grace's amateur investigation nearly blows his covert operation. Unless he nails the con-artist who scammed his home-town's seniors and whacked a witness, his homicidal granddaddy will take justice into his own liver-spotted hands. To salvage his case, his sanity, and his ex-lover's velvety skin, Nick joins forces with the sassy crusader who rubs him the wrong way — and so many right ways too.

Action bounces from the upscale Shore community of Saltwater Estates to a beach harboring washed-up corpses, a fancy yacht no honest preacher could possibly afford, and the bawdiest nightclub in Atlantic City. Hazards multiply like bunnies, culminating in fun, danger, romance … and a Fur Ball extravaganza the locals will never forget.

The weapon is invisible and omnipresent. Without it, modern society grinds to a halt. It is electricity. The killer harnesses and steers huge arc flashes with voltage so high and heat so searing that steel melts and his victims are set afire.

When the first explosion occurs in broad daylight, reducing a city bus to a pile of molten, shrapnel-riddled metal, officials fear terrorism. Rhyme, a world-class forensic criminologist known for his successful apprehension of the most devious criminals, is immediately tapped for the investigation. Long a quadriplegic, he assembles NYPD detective Amelia Sachs and officer Ron Pulaski as his eyes, ears and legs on crime sites, and FBI agent Fred Dellray as his undercover man on the street. As the attacks continue across the city at a sickening pace, and terrifying demand letters begin appearing, the team works desperately against time and with maddeningly little forensic evidence to try to find the killer. Or is it killers … ?

Meanwhile, Rhyme is consulting on another high-profile investigation in Mexico with a most coveted quarry in his crosshairs: the hired killer known as the Watchmaker, one of the few criminals to have eluded Rhyme's net.

Juggling two massive investigations against a cruel ticking clock takes a toll on Rhyme's health. Soon Rhyme is fighting on yet another front — and his determination to work despite his physical limitations threatens to drive away his closest allies when he needs them most …

Review: Over Their Heads by J. B. Kohl and Eric Beetner

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Over Their Heads by J. B. Kohl and Eric Beetner.

Review summary: This is a most interesting crime novel with some dark comedic elements to it. Crisply written from the points of view of four characters, the story moves along briskly but then tends to drag a little towards the end before being rapidly wrapped up in a slightly too tidy manner. Even so, the journey is well worth taking. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 4 of 5 stars
