Telemystery News: TNT Orders 8-Part Adaptation of Caleb Carr's The Alienist

Telemystery: Prime Time Crime

TNT has announced that it has ordered a new, 8-part drama based on the historical crime novel The Alienist by Caleb Carr, which was honored with the 1995 Anthony Award for Best First Novel.

The network describes The Alienist as a fast-paced and atmospheric psychological thriller set in the fascinating and gritty world of Gilded Age New York City. After a series of haunting and gruesome murders, psychiatrist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, newspaper reporter John Moore and police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt come together employing emerging disciplines of psychology and early crime investigation techniques to track down one of New York City’s first serial killers.

A premiere date was not announced.

More about the book, below.

The Alienist by Caleb Carr

The Alienist by Caleb Carr

A Dr. Lazlo Kreizler Mystery (1st in series)

The Alienist by Caleb Carr, Amazon Kindle format

The year is 1896, the place, New York City. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friend and former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan's infamous brothels.

The newly appointed police commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt, in a highly unorthodox move, enlists the two men in the murder investigation, counting on the reserved Kreizler's intellect and Moore's knowledge of New York's vast criminal underworld. They are joined by Sara Howard, a brave and determined woman who works as a secretary in the police department. Laboring in secret (for alienists, and the emerging discipline of psychology, are viewed by the public with skepticism at best), the unlikely team embarks on what is a revolutionary effort in criminology — amassing a psychological profile of the man they're looking for based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who has killed before. and will kill again before the hunt is over.

Toby Vanne, an American airman on leave in Brighton, finds the dead body of a girl in a field near Lewes. Before reporting the grisly find to police, Toby spots a piece of paper lying near the corpse and, assuming it to be litter, picks it up and puts it in his pocket. The girl, soon identified as local girl Cathie Wilkes, has been shot in the back with the type of revolver that was used to murder a shopkeeper in nearby Forest Row. Cathie is thought to have recently run off with petty criminal, Joseph Landor. On the night of the Forest Row shooting, a mysterious couple pull up in a Daimler outside the cafe where Geoffrey Taylor works. Taylor feels uneasy towards the late-night visitors and thinks their behaviour is suspicious. The next day, an abandoned Daimler turns up in nearby Jevington and police find fingerprints on it belonging to Landor. But Landor is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile a car reported stolen by local sales representative George Waide is recovered by police and the dead girl's fingerprints are found on the steering wheel. Is Waide hiding something? Toby later remembers the piece of paper in his pocket and is surprised to find it is a hand-drawn map of an area in Brighton. Could the map be a clue to the murders? Toby decides to begin his own investigations.

He takes into his confidence a charming young widow, Crossetta Tait. The map leads Toby and Crossetta to a garage in a lonely, dark street in pursuit of a suspect. But Crossetta's thirst for danger throws the pair into worrying situations and almost gets Toby killed. When two more bodies are found and it soon becomes clear that someone wants Toby dead. But who?Has Toby gotten too far out of his depth by taking the law into his own hands? Should he risk telling the police about the map? It might just save his life …

Or it might prove that a gun to play with can be a force of death and destruction …

Investigator Deville, also originally from France, remembers the victim briefly. The crime scene disturbs him, triggering his memory about his own past. He arrived in the United States in an alcohol induced coma which caused amnesia. Many parts of his past unveil itself as he investigates. Many suspects had a reason to kill Bellamont, his wife, his teenage son, the woman he was having an affair with, plus the owners from the winery he gave merciless reviews.

Three wineries are always in the picture: Allenwood Vineyard, Owen's Winery, and Catalina. Which winery has the most to gain and who was responsible for the death?

Behind the corruption lies the poster boy for corporate America and the religious right, billionaire Elias St. Armand. Hunted by St. Armand, Farrell escapes from St. Louis to San Francisco, where he reconnects with Sara Ahrens, his former love. More important, she is the only one he can trust now.

Wealthy socialite Elizabeth Cateman Kingsley has hired Helen to find a missing John Singer Sargent painting, owned by her late father. After his death, many of Davis Cateman's books were donated to the Flora Park library, and his daughter suspects the small watercolor — worth millions — was tucked away inside one of those dusty tomes.

To search the stacks, Helen applies for a position as a library volunteer and discovers the library director has a catalog of complaints — from a mischievous calico cat named Paris to the mysterious disappearance of various items that some of the more imaginative staff are attributing to a ghost haunting the building.

While her husband Phil sticks his neck out to find a missing necklace, Helen is on her own with no one to lend her a hand. When a dead body turns up in a parking lot, it appears someone is willing to go to any lengths to keep the treasure in the library quiet. Now Helen is bound and determined to find the killer as well as the painting — before she's taken out of circulation herself.

FBI analyst Kassidy Bishop is assigned to the "For You" killer's task force after a series of sadistic murders bearing the same signature arise in different parts of the country.

The homicides are both calculated and savage, occurring in different states, but bearing the same signature: the words "for you" scribbled at each crime scene. The case chills Kassidy, bringing back memories of her own encounter with a violent criminal five years earlier.

Kassidy's mentor, legendary agent Talia "The Confessor" Crossen knows the task force assignment is Kassidy's chance to prove to her colleagues that she belongs in the Behavior Analysis Unit. For five years, other FBI agents and profilers scoffed at Kassidy's appointment to the BAU, believing she was only offered the position in exchange for her silence about the brutal assault that almost killed her.

The stakes rise when the task force links the killer's signature to Kassidy. As more and more bodies turn up, Kassidy must delve into her past and the mysterious death of her twin sister, which holds the key to uncovering the killer's identity.

The closer Kassidy comes to finding the killer, the closer she comes to a deadly confrontation that could cost her everything — including her own life.

Please Welcome Back Mystery Author David Burnsworth

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by David Burnsworth

We are delighted to welcome author David Burnsworth to Omnimystery News today, courtesy of Great Escapes Book Tours, which is coordinating his current book tour. We encourage you to visit all of the participating host sites; you can find his schedule here.

We visited with David last year just after his murder mystery Southern Heat (Five Star; February 2014 hardcover and ebook formats) was published. When we later asked him if we would see Brack Pelton, the lead character of the book, in a sequel, his reply to us was, "Series-ously?"

I love the thriller and mystery series genres. Especially the ones that have been around for a few books, allowing me to get to know the characters. Jack Reacher, Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcel, Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers, Liz Talbot, John Wells, Kathy Mallory, Harry Bosch, Jane Ryland, Tess Monaghan … the list could go on and on. There is just something about stepping into these characters' worlds for a few hours. That is a primary reason I chose to go the series route for my own writing. I wanted to spend more time with my characters, too.

The masters of the craft grow their characters and we get to grow with them. Dave Robicheaux has been fighting himself and the bottle for a long time. James Lee Burke has done such a phenomenal job with him that I feel I can tell when Dave is about to fall by the scenes Burke sets up. Carol O'Connell's Kathy Mallory owns her scenes. She is such a strong character for being a young prodigy detective, yet she is slowly learning how to be human as well. (If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, read the series!)

In the same way, I know my main character, Brack Pelton, has to grow. He has to get his life in better order. But like me, sometimes he stumbles over his own feet. And it's in the stumbling that I learn more about him. Some authors have their character's lives outlined pretty far ahead and I applaud them for that. For all my good intentions of planning, Brack has other ideas. He takes over. It's his story and he is going to live in it his way.

Sometimes, I must admit, he can be frustrating. I'm like, "Come on Brack. I need you to do this, otherwise I have to change this scene and the next four." He stops in the middle of the scene, lights a cigar, looks at me, and says, "You and I both know that isn't going to happen." We go back and forth for more than a few rounds as I type, retype, and try to force the square peg into the round hole. Finally, I rewrite the scene his way and then fix the next four that I'd already sketched out. And it works better than I ever intended.

It only took a few failed attempts at the frontal assault with Brack before I learned to change tactics. He thrives on conflict. It is in the heat of the moment that he excels. Knowing this, I have a lot of fun throwing everything at him but the kitchen sink. Time and time again he shows me something new about himself. Something that, back when he'd first assembled himself from the pile of protagonist discards I'd been toying with for a few years and risen onto the page, I never in my wildest dreams thought he'd become. And I just smile, pat my muse on the back, and give a toast to Brack. The bugger!
