The Mycroft Holmes Casebook by David Dickinson, Amazon Kindle format

Sherlock Holmes has retired to the country to look after bees. And Dr Watson has returned full time to his medical profession. So when a new case comes along, Inspector Lestrade turns instead to Sherlock's reclusive but highly intelligent older brother Mycroft.

This collection includes all six of David Dickinson's best-selling Mycroft Holmes detective adventures in one place. From the City of London, to the finest country estates, Mycroft proves every bit as ingenious as his brother.

The stories are:

"The Case of the Silver Birches" — Inspector Lestrade is facing the biggest case of his career. The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and the Governor of the Bank of England have learnt through a variety of sources that Britain's enemies were trying to debase the currency. Mycroft tracks the gang through the banks and Treasuries of Europe, his brain travelling faster than the swiftest express train …

"The Case of the Naval Engineer" — When a corpse is found by the fire in Mycroft Holmes's rooms in London's Pall Mall early one morning, the brother of the country's most famous detective is about to face the greatest mystery of his career. Within two hours, Mycroft Holmes has been arrested on a charge of murder and taken in handcuffs to Wormwood Scrubs prison. Has he been framed by his greatest enemy, the elusive master criminal the German Count Von Stoltenburg?

"The Case of the Missing Popes" — Mycroft Holmes is approached by a distraught young aristocrat, the son of the Home Secretary Lord Melrose. There has been a mysterious burglary at his father's mansion. Two famous Raphael Popes have disappeared. Mycroft travels north by a special train. Did the thieves break in or was it an inside job?

"The Case of the Bankers' Conclave: — A financial crisis, and a bank on the brink of ruin. The City of London, the great financial hub of the British Empire, stands on the edge of collapse. And yet, in the background, an attack on the City's lines of communication are making the matter worse. Mycroft Holmes believes dark forces are at work. And he has just a few hours to prove his theory correct …

"The Murder at the Diogenes Club" — Silence is golden at the Diogenes, Mycroft's Pall Mall club. You are only allowed to speak in the Stranger's Room. But for William St John Plunkett neither silence nor speech is an option any more. He is found dead at the bottom of the great staircase, blood and brains spattered all over the marble floor. Mycroft's health is failing, but he summons all his powers to resolve the murder mystery on his own doorstep …

"The Case of the Romanov Pearls" — The White Pearls of the Romanovs were among the most famous jewels in the world. Won at a late night gambling session at the Pushkin Club in St Petersburg, they eventually came into the possession of the British Duchess of Alcester as part of her dazzling jewel collection. One evening they are stolen from her neck at the Majestic Hotel in Brighton. Luckily for her Mycroft Holmes is a guest at the same hotel …

After his death, Kacy uncovered secrets about Alex she was better off not knowing, so she ran away. Now someone is watching her.

Sylvia Thorn, circuit court judge in Palm Beach County, Florida, takes an unexpected trip to Sangamon City, Illinois, when her older brother, Willie Grisseljon, is confined to a county hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. A Vietnam veteran with a few lingering side effects from the war, Willie was on vacation, exploring the countryside where he and Sylvia had grown up. There he found a body, and when he tried to report his discovery to a deputy sheriff, he was locked up as a vagrant with delusions.

Willie is released from the hospital when Sylvia arrives. She is reluctantly drawn into the mystery when Willie insists on revisiting the site where the body is hidden. When the two also discover a local businessman is missing, they make the connection and notify the sheriff.

Soon, the two discover clues about the murdered farm manager and his wife, a tenant farmer, concealed Indian artifacts, and uprooted prairie grass plots that may help the sheriff solve the crime. But Sylvia runs into trouble when she's caught nosing around the old homestead. She hides, but overhears a second murder take place.

She escapes one gun-toting suspect, only to join up with Willie and confront another. Relieved when the sheriff releases them to return to Florida, Sylvia doesn't realize at first that she and her brother are still in danger. A mysterious new neighbor with a menacing bodyguard, and new information Sylvia finds in her legal system database, provide her with the incentive to pursue a search for the truth. Sylvia must use her contacts with the Illinois sheriff and Florida security personnel, as well as Willie's intuitive skills, to remove the threat to herself and her family and provide the missing links to state and federal authorities.

The eruption of Italy's Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 buried a city and its people, their treasures and secrets. Centuries later, echoes of this disaster resonate with profound consequences in the life of classics professor Sophie Chase.

In the aftermath of a tragic shooting on the University of Texas campus, Sophie seeks sanctuary on the isle of Capri, immersing herself in her latest scholarly project alongside her colleagues, her star pupil, and their benefactor, the compelling yet enigmatic business mogul John Lyros.

Beneath layers of volcanic ash lies the Villa della Notte — the Night Villa — home to first-century nobles, as well as to the captivating slave girl at the heart of an ancient controversy. And secreted in a subterranean labyrinth rests a cache of antique documents believed lost to the ages: a prize too tantalizing for Sophie to resist. But suspicion, fear, and danger roam the long-untrodden tunnels and chambers beneath the once sumptuous estate — especially after Sophie sees the face of her former lover in the darkness, leaving her to wonder if she is chasing shadows or succumbing to the siren song of the Night Villa. Whatever shocking events transpired in the face of Vesuvius's fury have led to deeper, darker machinations that inexorably draw Sophie into their vortex, rich in stunning revelations and laden with unseen menace.

Now Daryl Anne returns to Weddingville to see her best friend say I do … and witnesses a whole lot of something hitting the fan-and it's not rice.

As the maid of honor, Daryl Anne must keep the bride calm, no matter what. But last time she checked, "what" didn't include the bride's estranged mother turning up, scandalizing the locals — and getting herself murdered. Nor did it include digging for clues with Seth, while trying to remember exactly why she left him behind. It's quite a juggling act, even for a seasoned multi-tasker like Daryl Anne. She soon attracts lusty glances from Seth-and the attention of a killer who's determined to take this town out of business …

Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn't perfect, it's livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don't nag at him too much.

At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela's apartment. And Tim's. And Veek's.

Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends.
